    Robust Leader Election in a Fast-Changing World

    We consider the problem of electing a leader among nodes in a highly dynamic network where the adversary has unbounded capacity to insert and remove nodes (including the leader) from the network and change connectivity at will. We present a randomized Las Vegas algorithm that (re)elects a leader in O(D\log n) rounds with high probability, where D is a bound on the dynamic diameter of the network and n is the maximum number of nodes in the network at any point in time. We assume a model of broadcast-based communication where a node can send only 1 message of O(\log n) bits per round and is not aware of the receivers in advance. Thus, our results also apply to mobile wireless ad-hoc networks, improving over the optimal (for deterministic algorithms) O(Dn) solution presented at FOMC 2011. We show that our algorithm is optimal by proving that any randomized Las Vegas algorithm takes at least omega(D\log n) rounds to elect a leader with high probability, which shows that our algorithm yields the best possible (up to constants) termination time.Comment: In Proceedings FOMC 2013, arXiv:1310.459

    A probabilistic analysis of a leader election algorithm

    A {\em leader election} algorithm is an elimination process that divides recursively into tow subgroups an initial group of n items, eliminates one subgroup and continues the procedure until a subgroup is of size 1. In this paper the biased case is analyzed. We are interested in the {\em cost} of the algorithm, i.e. the number of operations needed until the algorithm stops. Using a probabilistic approach, the asymptotic behavior of the algorithm is shown to be related to the behavior of a hitting time of two random sequences on [0,1]

    Message and time efficient multi-broadcast schemes

    We consider message and time efficient broadcasting and multi-broadcasting in wireless ad-hoc networks, where a subset of nodes, each with a unique rumor, wish to broadcast their rumors to all destinations while minimizing the total number of transmissions and total time until all rumors arrive to their destination. Under centralized settings, we introduce a novel approximation algorithm that provides almost optimal results with respect to the number of transmissions and total time, separately. Later on, we show how to efficiently implement this algorithm under distributed settings, where the nodes have only local information about their surroundings. In addition, we show multiple approximation techniques based on the network collision detection capabilities and explain how to calibrate the algorithms' parameters to produce optimal results for time and messages.Comment: In Proceedings FOMC 2013, arXiv:1310.459

    Deterministic Digital Clustering of Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

    We consider deterministic distributed communication in wireless ad hoc networks of identical weak devices under the SINR model without predefined infrastructure. Most algorithmic results in this model rely on various additional features or capabilities, e.g., randomization, access to geographic coordinates, power control, carrier sensing with various precision of measurements, and/or interference cancellation. We study a pure scenario, when no such properties are available. As a general tool, we develop a deterministic distributed clustering algorithm. Our solution relies on a new type of combinatorial structures (selectors), which might be of independent interest. Using the clustering, we develop a deterministic distributed local broadcast algorithm accomplishing this task in O(ΔlogNlogN)O(\Delta \log^*N \log N) rounds, where Δ\Delta is the density of the network. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first solution in pure scenario which is only polylog(n)(n) away from the universal lower bound Ω(Δ)\Omega(\Delta), valid also for scenarios with randomization and other features. Therefore, none of these features substantially helps in performing the local broadcast task. Using clustering, we also build a deterministic global broadcast algorithm that terminates within O(D(Δ+logN)logN)O(D(\Delta + \log^* N) \log N) rounds, where DD is the diameter of the network. This result is complemented by a lower bound Ω(DΔ11/α)\Omega(D \Delta^{1-1/\alpha}), where α>2\alpha > 2 is the path-loss parameter of the environment. This lower bound shows that randomization or knowledge of own location substantially help (by a factor polynomial in Δ\Delta) in the global broadcast. Therefore, unlike in the case of local broadcast, some additional model features may help in global broadcast

    Gossip in a Smartphone Peer-to-Peer Network

    In this paper, we study the fundamental problem of gossip in the mobile telephone model: a recently introduced variation of the classical telephone model modified to better describe the local peer-to-peer communication services implemented in many popular smartphone operating systems. In more detail, the mobile telephone model differs from the classical telephone model in three ways: (1) each device can participate in at most one connection per round; (2) the network topology can undergo a parameterized rate of change; and (3) devices can advertise a parameterized number of bits about their state to their neighbors in each round before connection attempts are initiated. We begin by describing and analyzing new randomized gossip algorithms in this model under the harsh assumption of a network topology that can change completely in every round. We prove a significant time complexity gap between the case where nodes can advertise 00 bits to their neighbors in each round, and the case where nodes can advertise 11 bit. For the latter assumption, we present two solutions: the first depends on a shared randomness source, while the second eliminates this assumption using a pseudorandomness generator we prove to exist with a novel generalization of a classical result from the study of two-party communication complexity. We then turn our attention to the easier case where the topology graph is stable, and describe and analyze a new gossip algorithm that provides a substantial performance improvement for many parameters.     Contributions on agreement in dynamic distributed systems

    139 p.This Ph.D. thesis studies the agreement problem in dynamic distributed systems by integrating both the classical fault-tolerance perspective and the more recent formalism based on evolving graphs. First, we developed a common framework that allows to analyze and compare models of dynamic distributed systems for eventual leader election. The framework extends a previous proposal by Baldoni et al. by including new dimensions and levels of dynamicity. Also, we extend the Time-Varying Graph (TVG) formalism by introducing the necessary timeliness assumptions and the minimal conditions to solve agreement problems. We provide a hierarchy of time-bounded, TVG-based, connectivity classes with increasingly stronger assumptions and specify an implementation of Terminating Reliable Broadcast for each class. Then we define an Omega failure detector, W, for the eventual leader election in dynamic distributed systems, together with a system model, , which is compatible with the timebounded TVG classes. We implement an algorithm that satisfy the properties of W in M. According to our common framework, M results to be weaker than the previous proposed dynamic distributed system models for eventual leader election. Additionally we use simulations to illustrate this fact and show that our leader election algorithm tolerates more general (i.e., dynamic) behaviors, and hence it is of application in a wider range of practical scenarios at the cost of a moderate overhead on stabilization times

    On the Fundamental Limits of Broadcasting in Wireless Mobile Networks

    In this talk, we investigate the fundamental properties of broadcasting in mobile wireless networks. In particular, we characterize broadcast capacity and latency of a mobile network, subject to the condition that the stationary node spatial distribution generated by the mobility model is uniform. We first study the intrinsic properties of broadcasting, and present a broadcasting scheme, called RippleCast, that simultaneously achieves asymptotically optimal broadcast capacity and latency, subject to a weak upper bound on the maximum node velocity. This study intendedly ignores the burden related to the selection of broadcast relay nodes within the mobile network, and shows that optimal broadcasting in mobile networks is, in principle, possible. We then investigate the broadcasting problem when the relay selection burden is taken into account, and present a combined distributed leader election and broadcasting scheme achieving a broadcast capacity and latency which is within a Theta((logn)1+frac2alpha)Theta((log n)^{1+frac{2}{alpha}}) factor from optimal, where nn is the number of mobile nodes and alpha>2alpha>2 is the path loss exponent. However, this result holds only under the assumption that the upper bound on node velocity converges to zero (although with a very slow, poly-logarithmic rate) as nn grows to infinity. To the best of our knowledge, our is the first paper investigating the effects of node mobility on the fundamental properties of broadcasting, and showing that, while optimal broadcasting in a mobile network is in principle possible, the coordination efforts related to the selection of broadcast relay nodes lead to sub-optimal broadcasting performance
