Acronym-Meaning Extraction from Corpora Using Multi-Tape Weighted Finite-State Machines
The automatic extraction of acronyms and their meaning from corpora is an
important sub-task of text mining. It can be seen as a special case of string
alignment, where a text chunk is aligned with an acronym. Alternative
alignments have different cost, and ideally the least costly one should give
the correct meaning of the acronym. We show how this approach can be
implemented by means of a 3-tape weighted finite-state machine (3-WFSM) which
reads a text chunk on tape 1 and an acronym on tape 2, and generates all
alternative alignments on tape 3. The 3-WFSM can be automatically generated
from a simple regular expression. No additional algorithms are required at any
stage. Our 3-WFSM has a size of 27 states and 64 transitions, and finds the
best analysis of an acronym in a few milliseconds.Comment: 6 pages, LaTe
Streamability of nested word transductions
We consider the problem of evaluating in streaming (i.e., in a single
left-to-right pass) a nested word transduction with a limited amount of memory.
A transduction T is said to be height bounded memory (HBM) if it can be
evaluated with a memory that depends only on the size of T and on the height of
the input word. We show that it is decidable in coNPTime for a nested word
transduction defined by a visibly pushdown transducer (VPT), if it is HBM. In
this case, the required amount of memory may depend exponentially on the height
of the word. We exhibit a sufficient, decidable condition for a VPT to be
evaluated with a memory that depends quadratically on the height of the word.
This condition defines a class of transductions that strictly contains all
determinizable VPTs
Equivalence Testing of Weighted Automata over Partially Commutative Monoids
Motivated by equivalence testing of k-tape automata, we study the equivalence testing of weighted automata in the more general setting, over partially commutative monoids (in short, pc monoids), and show efficient algorithms in some special cases, exploiting the structure of the underlying non-commutation graph of the monoid.
Specifically, if the edge clique cover number of the non-commutation graph of the pc monoid is a constant, we obtain a deterministic quasi-polynomial time algorithm for equivalence testing. As a corollary, we obtain the first deterministic quasi-polynomial time algorithms for equivalence testing of k-tape weighted automata and for equivalence testing of deterministic k-tape automata for constant k. Prior to this, the best complexity upper bound for these k-tape automata problems were randomized polynomial-time, shown by Worrell [James Worrell, 2013]. Finding a polynomial-time deterministic algorithm for equivalence testing of deterministic k-tape automata for constant k has been open for several years [Emily P. Friedman and Sheila A. Greibach, 1982] and our results make progress.
We also consider pc monoids for which the non-commutation graphs have an edge cover consisting of at most k cliques and star graphs for any constant k. We obtain a randomized polynomial-time algorithm for equivalence testing of weighted automata over such monoids.

Optimal Reachability in Divergent Weighted Timed Games
Weighted timed games are played by two players on a timed automaton equipped
with weights: one player wants to minimise the accumulated weight while
reaching a target, while the other has an opposite objective. Used in a
reactive synthesis perspective, this quantitative extension of timed games
allows one to measure the quality of controllers. Weighted timed games are
notoriously difficult and quickly undecidable, even when restricted to
non-negative weights. Decidability results exist for subclasses of one-clock
games, and for a subclass with non-negative weights defined by a semantical
restriction on the weights of cycles. In this work, we introduce the class of
divergent weighted timed games as a generalisation of this semantical
restriction to arbitrary weights. We show how to compute their optimal value,
yielding the first decidable class of weighted timed games with negative
weights and an arbitrary number of clocks. In addition, we prove that
divergence can be decided in polynomial space. Last, we prove that for untimed
games, this restriction yields a class of games for which the value can be
computed in polynomial time
Completeness Results for Parameterized Space Classes
The parameterized complexity of a problem is considered "settled" once it has
been shown to lie in FPT or to be complete for a class in the W-hierarchy or a
similar parameterized hierarchy. Several natural parameterized problems have,
however, resisted such a classification. At least in some cases, the reason is
that upper and lower bounds for their parameterized space complexity have
recently been obtained that rule out completeness results for parameterized
time classes. In this paper, we make progress in this direction by proving that
the associative generability problem and the longest common subsequence problem
are complete for parameterized space classes. These classes are defined in
terms of different forms of bounded nondeterminism and in terms of simultaneous
time--space bounds. As a technical tool we introduce a "union operation" that
translates between problems complete for classical complexity classes and for

Model-checking Quantitative Alternating-time Temporal Logic on One-counter Game Models
We consider quantitative extensions of the alternating-time temporal logics
ATL/ATLs called quantitative alternating-time temporal logics (QATL/QATLs) in
which the value of a counter can be compared to constants using equality,
inequality and modulo constraints. We interpret these logics in one-counter
game models which are infinite duration games played on finite control graphs
where each transition can increase or decrease the value of an unbounded
counter. That is, the state-space of these games are, generally, infinite. We
consider the model-checking problem of the logics QATL and QATLs on one-counter
game models with VASS semantics for which we develop algorithms and provide
matching lower bounds. Our algorithms are based on reductions of the
model-checking problems to model-checking games. This approach makes it quite
simple for us to deal with extensions of the logical languages as well as the
infinite state spaces. The framework generalizes on one hand qualitative
problems such as ATL/ATLs model-checking of finite-state systems,
model-checking of the branching-time temporal logics CTL and CTLs on
one-counter processes and the realizability problem of LTL specifications. On
the other hand the model-checking problem for QATL/QATLs generalizes
quantitative problems such as the fixed-initial credit problem for energy games
(in the case of QATL) and energy parity games (in the case of QATLs). Our
results are positive as we show that the generalizations are not too costly
with respect to complexity. As a byproduct we obtain new results on the
complexity of model-checking CTLs in one-counter processes and show that
deciding the winner in one-counter games with LTL objectives is
