A Survey on IT-Techniques for a Dynamic Emergency Management in Large Infrastructures
This deliverable is a survey on the IT techniques that are relevant to the three use cases of the project EMILI. It describes the state-of-the-art in four complementary IT areas: Data cleansing, supervisory control and data acquisition, wireless sensor networks and complex event processing. Even though the deliverableās authors have tried to avoid a too technical language and have tried to explain every concept referred to, the deliverable might seem rather technical to readers so far little familiar with the techniques it describes
Space station automation of common module power management and distribution, volume 2
The new Space Station Module Power Management and Distribution System (SSM/PMAD) testbed automation system is described. The subjects discussed include testbed 120 volt dc star bus configuration and operation, SSM/PMAD automation system architecture, fault recovery and management expert system (FRAMES) rules english representation, the SSM/PMAD user interface, and the SSM/PMAD future direction. From a Competition for Self-Driving Miniature Cars to a Standardized Experimental Platform: Concept, Models, Architecture, and Evaluation
Context: Competitions for self-driving cars facilitated the development and
research in the domain of autonomous vehicles towards potential solutions for
the future mobility.
Objective: Miniature vehicles can bridge the gap between simulation-based
evaluations of algorithms relying on simplified models, and those
time-consuming vehicle tests on real-scale proving grounds.
Method: This article combines findings from a systematic literature review,
an in-depth analysis of results and technical concepts from contestants in a
competition for self-driving miniature cars, and experiences of participating
in the 2013 competition for self-driving cars.
Results: A simulation-based development platform for real-scale vehicles has
been adapted to support the development of a self-driving miniature car.
Furthermore, a standardized platform was designed and realized to enable
research and experiments in the context of future mobility solutions.
Conclusion: A clear separation between algorithm conceptualization and
validation in a model-based simulation environment enabled efficient and
riskless experiments and validation. The design of a reusable, low-cost, and
energy-efficient hardware architecture utilizing a standardized
software/hardware interface enables experiments, which would otherwise require

Enhanced JavaScript learning using code quality tools and a rule-based system in the FLIP Exploratory Learning Environment
The āFLIP Learningā (Flexible, Intelligent and Personalised Learning) is an Exploratory Learning Environment (ELE) for teaching elementary programming to beginners using JavaScript. This paper presents the subsystem that is used to generate individualised real-time support to students depending on their initial misconceptions. The subsystem is intended to be used primarily in the early stages of student engagement in order to help them overcome the constraints of their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) with minimal assistance from teachers
Applying Prolog to Develop Distributed Systems
Development of distributed systems is a difficult task. Declarative
programming techniques hold a promising potential for effectively supporting
programmer in this challenge. While Datalog-based languages have been actively
explored for programming distributed systems, Prolog received relatively little
attention in this application area so far. In this paper we present a
Prolog-based programming system, called DAHL, for the declarative development
of distributed systems. DAHL extends Prolog with an event-driven control
mechanism and built-in networking procedures. Our experimental evaluation using
a distributed hash-table data structure, a protocol for achieving Byzantine
fault tolerance, and a distributed software model checker - all implemented in
DAHL - indicates the viability of the approach

DALiuGE: A Graph Execution Framework for Harnessing the Astronomical Data Deluge
The Data Activated Liu Graph Engine - DALiuGE - is an execution framework for
processing large astronomical datasets at a scale required by the Square
Kilometre Array Phase 1 (SKA1). It includes an interface for expressing complex
data reduction pipelines consisting of both data sets and algorithmic
components and an implementation run-time to execute such pipelines on
distributed resources. By mapping the logical view of a pipeline to its
physical realisation, DALiuGE separates the concerns of multiple stakeholders,
allowing them to collectively optimise large-scale data processing solutions in
a coherent manner. The execution in DALiuGE is data-activated, where each
individual data item autonomously triggers the processing on itself. Such
decentralisation also makes the execution framework very scalable and flexible,
supporting pipeline sizes ranging from less than ten tasks running on a laptop
to tens of millions of concurrent tasks on the second fastest supercomputer in
the world. DALiuGE has been used in production for reducing interferometry data
sets from the Karl E. Jansky Very Large Array and the Mingantu Ultrawide
Spectral Radioheliograph; and is being developed as the execution framework
prototype for the Science Data Processor (SDP) consortium of the Square
Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope. This paper presents a technical overview of
DALiuGE and discusses case studies from the CHILES and MUSER projects that use
DALiuGE to execute production pipelines. In a companion paper, we provide
in-depth analysis of DALiuGE's scalability to very large numbers of tasks on
