Strategic supply chain management implications of an unregulated BREXIT

    Get PDF
Due to the integrated, complex and long supply chain structure of the automotive industry and the large size of cross-border trade of components and cars between UK´s and EU´s automotive supply chain actors, the implementation of a tariff scheme and custom handling procedures in the event of an unregulated (hard) BREXIT by March 2019 negatively affects the industry. The fundamental Four Freedoms are hindered resulting in an increase of sourcing costs. Assembly parts and distribution of final cars becomes costlier. The crucial JIT (just-in-time) philosophy is jeopardized due to the requirement of safety stock and custom checks. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a case study providing students with an effective way to apply Strategic- and Supply Chain Management (SCM) concepts based on a real case scenario of automobile industry (BMW). Professors are provided with resolution documents to effectively assess students’ solutions. A deductive approach was adopted in which the causal relationship between a hard BREXIT and strategic SCM implications is elaborated. A qualitative exploratory method was adopted, and the nature of the collected data is primarily qualitative, but also entails quantitative elements. Data was retrieved from scientific articles, industry specific reports, company reports, interviews and documentation from BMW. A hard BREXIT presents great challenges for BMW and their suppliers. BMW should foster cooperation with suppliers and engage in more backward integration policies to secure supply of strategic components and avoid supply stops. Supply network flexibility is crucial to maintain a sustained competitive SC. To offset trade barrier costs, BMW should partially shift MINI and eMINI production from the UK to other suitable European countries such as Hungary or the Netherlands and the company should aim towards more local sourcing in the UK for more standardized components

(Dis)harmony in times of crisis? An analysis of COVID-related strategic communication by Swiss public health institutions.

OBJECTIVES This study aims to assess COVID-related communication by Swiss public health institutions (PHI) as well as the challenges they faced in implementing their communication strategies. STUDY DESIGN This study uses a two-part mixed methods design, combining automated content analysis of press releases by PHI and semi-structured interviews with PHI communication experts. METHODS The automated content analysis uses natural language processing techniques to measure semantic themes and linguistic properties of 1882 press releases from national and regional PHI during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The semi-structured interviews with 25 communication experts from key PHI explore the challenges faced in implementing their communication strategies. RESULTS The content analysis reveals key themes in press releases, including non-pharmaceutical interventions, quarantine, testing, contact tracing, hospital situations, and the pandemic's impact on the economy. The linguistic measures indicated a decrease in complexity and readability over time, with no significant differences between national and regional PHI. Interviews revealed challenges arising from organizational structures, the multi-systemic nature of the pandemic, and from expectations of the public. CONCLUSIONS The study highlights the importance of agility in public health communication and the need for efficient coordination within and between PHI. Organizational structures should be adapted to allow for more agile modes of operation during crises. Policymakers should clarify roles and responsibilities of different actors in public health frameworks to ensure streamlined communication. Understanding the communication efforts and challenges faced by PHI during the pandemic helps preparing for future health crises and improve public health communication practices

In Search of Legitimacy in Post-revolutionary China: Bringing Ideology and Governance Back In

    Get PDF
The contemporary politics of China reflect an ongoing effort by the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to claim the right to rule in light of the consequences of economic development, international pressures, and historical change. China stands out within the Asian region for the success the regime has achieved in this effort. By focusing on the changes in China’s elite discourse during the reform period and particularly during the last decade, this paper aims to elaborate on the relative importance of various sources of legitimacy as they shift over time, as well as on their inherent dilemmas and limitations. There is evidence of an agile, responsive, and creative party effort to relegitimate the postrevolutionary regime through economic performance, nationalism, ideology, culture, governance, and democracy. At the same time, the paper identifies a clear shift in emphasis from an earlier economic-nationalistic approach to a more ideological-institutional approach.regime legitimacy, China, Chinese Communist Party, performance, nationalism, ideology, culturalism, governance, democracy

Exploring the core knowledge of business intelligence

With the rapid development of data analysis, there is few research on the core knowledge of business intelligence system (BIS). In order to fill this research gap, this paper collected the 1003 articles and 31345 references from the Web of Science database, and then applied co-citation analysis and factor analysis, to analyze their core knowledge. We identified 52 highly cited articles and obtained 9 core knowledge categories in the field of BI: BI success, IT acceptance and measurement, big data analysis, dataanalysis anddecision making, business strategy, BIS,consumer behavior, knowledge management, business adoption. Research shows that BISs are still in the growing trend and core knowledge helps researchers and managers better understand the core concepts and relevance of BI, so as to quickly discover possible research directionsinthisresearchfieldandusefulapplicationsintheenterprise

WANTED: DATA STEWARDS - (RE-)DEFINING THE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF DATA STEWARDS FOR AN AGE OF DATA COLLABORATION

    Get PDF
This paper is meant to inform the on-going exploration of how to enable systematic, sustainable, and responsible re-use of data through cross-sector data collaboration in the public interest (often called Data for Good). Data stewards build trust between organizations, agilely creating relationships between leaders from different sectors and backgrounds.Specifically, the position paper seeks to outline the roles and responsibilities of the emergent data steward profession. It is intended to support data-holding businesses and public institutions to create and promote data stewards in the public and private sectors; and to establish a network of these data stewards—as recently recommended by the High Level Expert Group to the European Commission on Business-to-Government Data Sharing.

Improving usefulness and ease of use for a prototype tool for journalists

Postponed access: the file will be accessible after 2019-05-24This thesis presents the work done on making a prototype tool for journalists more useful and easier to use through continuous improvements and evaluations. The work builds on the thesis News Hunter: a semantic news aggregator written by Ole Andreas Christensen and Kjetil Jacobsen Villanger (2017). This thesis focuses on the further development and addition of new functionality through iterative processes during development. As well as new functionality, the thesis focuses on making the project more sustainable for future use, with better documentation and refactoring of code. News Hunter is a collaborative project between the University of Bergen and Wolftech Broadcast Solutions. The goal of this thesis is to add new functionality to News Hunter and better document the project. This has been achieved by continuing working on Christensens and Villangers source code, and by adding new functionality in iterative agile steps throughout the develop- ment. The new functionality has then been evaluated by journalists and graphic reporters from TV 2 Norway, as well as journalism students from the University of Bergen.Masteroppgave i informasjonsvitenskapINFO39
