    Effective Dissemination of Presence Information in Highly Partitioned Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

    Presence technology enables users of an instant messaging (IM) system to determine if their contacts are online and ready to communicate. In this paper, we propose an effective approach for the proactive dissemination of frequently changing presence information in highly partitioned mobile, wireless networks with IEEE 802.11 technology. Although communication techniques for intermittently connected networks have been extensively studied in the field of delay tolerant networking, the fact that presence information is highly delay sensitive requires a thorough revision of these techniques. To this end, we use discrete-event simulation based on a high-level stochastic model of the IM system to compare different approaches for disseminating presence information in terms of sustained consistency (i.e., fraction of time presence information is in a coherent state) and traffic requirements. Building upon the outcome of the simulation study, we propose the system for presence information exchange by epidemic dissemination (SPEED). Results of a detailed ns-2 simulation study show that SPEED outperforms an approach based on optimized flooding by up to 20% in terms of sustained consistency for low node density and saves up to 48% of control traffic for medium to high node density

    Encounter gossip: a high coverage broadcast protocol for MANET

    PhD ThesisMobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) allow deployment of mobile wireless devices or nodes in a range of environments without any fixed infrastructure and hence at a minimal setup cost. Broadcast support that assures a high coverage (i.e., a large fraction of nodes receiving a broadcast) is essential for hosting user applications, and is also non-trivial to achieve due to the nature of devices and mobility. We propose Encounter Gossip, a novel broadcast protocol, which holds minimal state and is unaware of network topology. Coverage obtained can be made arbitrarily close to 1 at a moderate cost of extra message tra c, even in partition-prone networks. Under certain simplifying assumptions, it is shown that a high coverage is achieved by making a total of O(n ln n) broadcasts, where n is the number of nodes, and the time to propagate a message is O(ln n). The e ect of various network parameters on the protocol performance is examined. We then propose modifications to minimise the number of redundant transmissions without compromising the achieved coverage. Two approaches are pursued: timer based and history based. The e ectiveness of each of these approaches is assessed through an extensive set of simulation experiments in the context of two mobility models. Specifically, we introduce a new heuristic alpha policy which achieves significant reduction in redundancy with negligible reduction in coverage. A generalisation to multiple broadcasts proceeding in parallel is proposed and the protocol is refined to reduce problems that can occur due to the effects of high mobility when transmitting a large number of messages. Finally, we implement and validate Encounter Gossip in the context of a real-life mobile ad-hoc network. All these investigations suggest that the protocol, together with the proposed modifications and re nements, is suited to MANETs of varying degrees of node densities and speeds

    DESIGN OF EFFICIENT IN-NETWORK DATA PROCESSING AND DISSEMINATION FOR VANETS

    By providing vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure wireless communications, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), also known as the “networks on wheels”, can greatly enhance traffic safety, traffic efficiency and driving experience for intelligent transportation system (ITS). However, the unique features of VANETs, such as high mobility and uneven distribution of vehicular nodes, impose critical challenges of high efficiency and reliability for the implementation of VANETs. This dissertation is motivated by the great application potentials of VANETs in the design of efficient in-network data processing and dissemination. Considering the significance of message aggregation, data dissemination and data collection, this dissertation research targets at enhancing the traffic safety and traffic efficiency, as well as developing novel commercial applications, based on VANETs, following four aspects: 1) accurate and efficient message aggregation to detect on-road safety relevant events, 2) reliable data dissemination to reliably notify remote vehicles, 3) efficient and reliable spatial data collection from vehicular sensors, and 4) novel promising applications to exploit the commercial potentials of VANETs. Specifically, to enable cooperative detection of safety relevant events on the roads, the structure-less message aggregation (SLMA) scheme is proposed to improve communication efficiency and message accuracy. The scheme of relative position based message dissemination (RPB-MD) is proposed to reliably and efficiently disseminate messages to all intended vehicles in the zone-of-relevance in varying traffic density. Due to numerous vehicular sensor data available based on VANETs, the scheme of compressive sampling based data collection (CS-DC) is proposed to efficiently collect the spatial relevance data in a large scale, especially in the dense traffic. In addition, with novel and efficient solutions proposed for the application specific issues of data dissemination and data collection, several appealing value-added applications for VANETs are developed to exploit the commercial potentials of VANETs, namely general purpose automatic survey (GPAS), VANET-based ambient ad dissemination (VAAD) and VANET based vehicle performance monitoring and analysis (VehicleView). Thus, by improving the efficiency and reliability in in-network data processing and dissemination, including message aggregation, data dissemination and data collection, together with the development of novel promising applications, this dissertation will help push VANETs further to the stage of massive deployment

    Geographic-Based Spray-and-Relay (GSaR): An Efficient Routing Scheme for DTNs

    In this article, we design and evaluate the proposed Geographic-based Spray-and-Relay (GSaR) routing scheme in Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networks (DTNs). To the best of our knowledge, GSaR is the first spray based geographic routing scheme using the historical geographic information for making routing decision. Here, the term spray means only a limited number of message copies are allowed for replication in the network. By estimating a movement range of destination via the historical geographic information, GSaR expedites message being sprayed towards this range, meanwhile prevents that away from and postpones that out of this range. As such, the combination of them intends to fast and efficiently spray the limited number of message copies towards this range, and effectively spray them within range, in order to reduce the delivery delay and increase the delivery ratio. Furthermore, GSaR exploits Delegation Forwarding (DF) to enhance the reliability of routing decision and handle the local maximum problem, considered as the challenges for applying geographic routing scheme in sparse networks. We evaluate GSaR under three city scenarios abstracted from real world, with other routing schemes for comparison. Results show that GSaR is reliable for delivering messages before expiration deadline and efficient for achieving low routing overhead ratio. Further observation indicates that GSaR is also efficient in terms of a low and fair energy consumption over the nodes in the network
