This thesis presents three essays on voice in non-traditional employment relationships with specific focus on triangular workers. The first essay provides a systematic literature review of previous empirical research exploring the voice of workers in nontraditional employment relationships. Findings from the systematic review revealed a research lacunae in the understanding of voice of workers in triangular employment relationships. These workers, in physically mediated (temporary agencies workers) and digitally mediated (platform workers) employment arrangements, are in a precarious working state and vulnerable. Hence, the second and third paper seeks to examine the voice experiences of these category of non-traditional workers, analyse the voice mechanisms available to these workers, the issues of concern to them, the motivators/inhibitors of their voice, and the outcomes of their voice. Specifically, the second essay presents a conceptual model to depict the determinants of triangular workers’ voice, and the third essay empirically investigates triangular workers’ voice, examining the voice experience of temporary agencies workers in the banking and health sectors, and e-hailing platform drivers in Nigeria. Findings from the empirical studies indicate that in the face of deliberate managerial silencing of triangular workers, they are in constant struggle to voice. The findings further demonstrates that beyond management-initiated voice mechanisms, workers also struggle to initiate voice means. Results from the study show convergence and divergence in the forces shaping voice among variants of triangular workers studied. While few similar forces influenced the voice of both triangular workers categories, a large differential was found in how individual and organisational structural forces influence temporary agency and online co-employment platform workers’ voice. Further findings from the empirical study expands previous research by identifying voice skill, self-identity conflict, agency-ownership governance, agency-client relationship, transition opportunity and perceived relative equity as new influencers of triangular workers’ voice. These findings add to the non-traditional workers voice theory development by identifying peculiar forces shaping less typical workers’ voice

    Digital Transformation

The amount of literature on Digital Transformation is staggering—and it keeps growing. Why, then, come out with yet another such document? Moreover, any text aiming at explaining the Digital Transformation by presenting a snapshot is going to become obsolete in a blink of an eye, most likely to be already obsolete at the time it is first published. The FDC Initiative on Digital Reality felt there is a need to look at the Digital Transformation from the point of view of a profound change that is pervading the entire society—a change made possible by technology and that keeps changing due to technology evolution opening new possibilities but is also a change happening because it has strong economic reasons. The direction of this change is not easy to predict because it is steered by a cultural evolution of society, an evolution that is happening in niches and that may expand rapidly to larger constituencies and as rapidly may fade away. This creation, selection by experimentation, adoption, and sudden disappearance, is what makes the whole scenario so unpredictable and continuously changing. The amount of literature on Digital Transformation is staggering—and it keeps growing. The research study here presented is focused on the problems related to the adoption of flexible work arrangement practices, namely, telework. The adoption of these practices is met by some constraints and necessities, such as the need for suitable communication and management tools. Due to these necessities teleworkers use a vast set of applications, with inherent difficulties of use especially for users with low digital literacy. In this context, the study aims to evaluate the communication and management needs derived from the adoption of telework conducive to the specification of an integrated system model that can, effectively, contribute to the adoption of these practices. The proposition of a system model is accompanied by the implementation of a functional prototype with a detailed the description of its structure and core modules. To evaluate the aforementioned problems a method of analysis that includes the evaluation of the prototype and research objectives, by users with different digital literacy in controlled sessions, followed by two written questionnaires and an interview, is presented. The evaluation results permit the validation of the system model, the structure and new features proposed. The results confirm that digital literacy can be a constraint to the use of telematic services and also indicate that the global availability of a system, adapted to the needs of teleworkers can contribute to the adoption of telework practices

Unmet goals of tracking: within-track heterogeneity of students' expectations for

Educational systems are often characterized by some form(s) of ability grouping, like tracking. Although substantial variation in the implementation of these practices exists, it is always the aim to improve teaching efficiency by creating homogeneous groups of students in terms of capabilities and performances as well as expected pathways. If students’ expected pathways (university, graduate school, or working) are in line with the goals of tracking, one might presume that these expectations are rather homogeneous within tracks and heterogeneous between tracks. In Flanders (the northern region of Belgium), the educational system consists of four tracks. Many students start out in the most prestigious, academic track. If they fail to gain the necessary credentials, they move to the less esteemed technical and vocational tracks. Therefore, the educational system has been called a 'cascade system'. We presume that this cascade system creates homogeneous expectations in the academic track, though heterogeneous expectations in the technical and vocational tracks. We use data from the International Study of City Youth (ISCY), gathered during the 2013-2014 school year from 2354 pupils of the tenth grade across 30 secondary schools in the city of Ghent, Flanders. Preliminary results suggest that the technical and vocational tracks show more heterogeneity in student’s expectations than the academic track. If tracking does not fulfill the desired goals in some tracks, tracking practices should be questioned as tracking occurs along social and ethnic lines, causing social inequality

Methods of Understanding and Designing For Mobile Communities

    Get PDF
Society is increasingly on the move, mobile devices are commonly being used to coordinate group actions, and group communication features are rapidly being added to existing technologies. Despite this, little is known about how mobile groups act, or how communications technologies should be designed to augment existing behaviour. This is partially due to minimal research being done on the topic, but also to the lack of research methods available to study the topic with. Mobile groups are challenging to study because of frequent and long-duration movement, frequent distribution, and the rapidly changing environments they operate within. To address these issues, this research focuses on methodological issues surrounding the development of mobile devices for mobile groups and communities. More specifically it addresses backpackers, who are a relevant example of this type of community. The research primarily explores the convergence of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) and the field of mobile device development. This enables the combination of emphasis on designing technologies for groups, social implications, mobile device design, and mobile settings. Major research outcomes presented in this thesis lie in three areas: 1) methods, 2) technology designs, and 3) backpacker culture. Five studies of backpacker behaviour and requirements form the core of the research. The methods used are in-situ and exploratory, and apply both novel and existing techniques to the domain of backpackers and mobile groups. Methods demonstrated in this research include: field trips for exploring mobile group behaviour and device usage, a social pairing exercise to explore social networks, contextual postcards to gain distributed feedback, and blog analysis which provides post-hoc diary data. Theoretical contributions include: observations on method triangulation, a taxonomy of mobility research, method templates to assist method usage, and identification of key categories leading to mobile group requirements. Design related outcomes include: 57 mobile tourism product ideas, a format for conveying product concepts, and a design for a wearable device to assist mobile researchers. Our understanding of backpacker culture has also improved as a consequence of the research. It has also generated user requirements to aid mobile development, methods of visualising mobile groups and communities, and a listing of relevant design tensions. Additionally, the research has added to our understanding of how new technologies such as blogs, SMS and iPods are being used by backpackers and how mobile groups naturally communicate

The politics of female homework: with special reference to Spitalfields 1880-1909

    Get PDF
PhDThis thesis examines the development of female homework as a social and political issue from 1880-1909. Special attention is given to homework in Spitalfields, East London. The study examines the formation and conduct of the campaign to reform the law and preserve the 'sanctity' of the Victorian home. We focus on the role of philanthropists, social reformers, the medical profession and the Press in bringing about greater public awareness of the problem of women's homeworking; and evaluate the impact of the campaign on government policy and legislation. The thesis traces the formulation and definition of the homework problem in. four distinct but overlapping phases: as a public health issue; as a 'dangerous trade'; as a problem of Motherhood, Race and Empire; and finally of underpaid labour. The Parliamentary processes which led to the 1909 Trade Boards Act are examined. The supportive response to the legislation by The Women's Industrial Council and women trade unionists (Clementina Black and Mary MacArthur); by the militant women's suffrage campaign (the Women's Social and Political Union); and by the Press (The Lancet and The Daily News) and the Anti-Sweating League (George Cadbury, Gertrude Tuckwell et al. ) is considered as indicative of the large measure of consensus on homework which was to remain in force for more than half a century
