    Digital Repositories and the Semantic Web: Semantic Search and Navigation for DSpace

However, such an approach cannot capture richer semantic relations that exist or may be implied, in the sense of a Semantic Web ontology. Therefore we first suggest a method in order to semantically intensify the underlying data model and develop an automatic translation of the flatly organized metadata information to this new ontology. Then we propose an implementation that provides for inference-based knowledge discovery, retrieval and navigation on top of digital repositories, based on this ontology. We apply this technique to real information stored in the University of Patras Institutional Repository that is based on DSpace, and confirm that more powerful, inference-based queries can indeed be performed

    Use of anti-terrorism digital ecosystem in the fight against terrorism

    In this paper, we propose an Anti-terrorist Digital Ecosystem (ATDES) that enables efficient terrorist identification and protection against terrorist attacks. An Anti-terrorist Digital Environment (ATDE) is designed as being populated by interconnected Anti-terrorist Digital Components (ATDC). ATDC are combined together to support collaboration, cooperation and sharing of available information between various regions, countries and even continents.ATDC may be any useful idea that can be digitalized, transported within the ecosystem and processed by humans or by computers. The key ATDC include ID databases that contain personal records, screening components that read personal records and match them with the available information from the ID databases and machine-readable personal records. The available information is put into one big virtual database and enables matching of personal records.If the available information is to be shared between various ID information resources, standardization of data needs to take place. Ontologies can be used for this purpose. Instantiation of the Ontology concepts result in ID Ontologies that act as personal records. Because Ontology files are machine readable, it is possible to do the matching of personal records with the available ID records from the networked ID databases and to action the results.The significance of this research lies in the unification of the advances of the Ontology technology and Ecosystem paradigm for the purpose of creating a more secure environment in which to fight against terrorism

    Knowledge society arguments revisited in the semantic technologies era

    In the light of high profile governmental and international efforts to realise the knowledge society, I review the arguments made for and against it from a technology standpoint. I focus on advanced knowledge technologies with applications on a large scale and in open- ended environments like the World Wide Web and its ambitious extension, the Semantic Web. I argue for a greater role of social networks in a knowledge society and I explore the recent developments in mechanised trust, knowledge certification, and speculate on their blending with traditional societal institutions. These form the basis of a sketched roadmap for enabling technologies for a knowledge society

    Utilising semantic technologies for intelligent indexing and retrieval of digital images

    The proliferation of digital media has led to a huge interest in classifying and indexing media objects for generic search and usage. In particular, we are witnessing colossal growth in digital image repositories that are difficult to navigate using free-text search mechanisms, which often return inaccurate matches as they in principle rely on statistical analysis of query keyword recurrence in the image annotation or surrounding text. In this paper we present a semantically-enabled image annotation and retrieval engine that is designed to satisfy the requirements of the commercial image collections market in terms of both accuracy and efficiency of the retrieval process. Our search engine relies on methodically structured ontologies for image annotation, thus allowing for more intelligent reasoning about the image content and subsequently obtaining a more accurate set of results and a richer set of alternatives matchmaking the original query. We also show how our well-analysed and designed domain ontology contributes to the implicit expansion of user queries as well as the exploitation of lexical databases for explicit semantic-based query expansion

    A semantic-based system for querying personal digital libraries

Copyright @ Springer 2004.The decreasing cost and the increasing availability of new technologies is enabling people to create their own digital libraries. One of the main topic in personal digital libraries is allowing people to select interesting information among all the different digital formats available today (pdf, html, tiff, etc.). Moreover the increasing availability of these on-line libraries, as well as the advent of the so called Semantic Web [1], is raising the demand for converting paper documents into digital, possibly semantically annotated, documents. These motivations drove us to design a new system which could enable the user to interact and query documents independently from the digital formats in which they are represented. In order to achieve this independence from the format we consider all the digital documents contained in a digital library as images. Our system tries to automatically detect the layout of the digital documents and recognize the geometric regions of interest. All the extracted information is then encoded with respect to a reference ontology, so that the user can query his digital library by typing free text or browsing the ontology
