    Sensorless action-reaction-based residual vibration suppression for multi-degree-of-freedom flexible systems

    This paper demonstrates the feasibility of controlling motion and vibration of a class of flexible systems with inaccessible or unknown outputs through measurements taken from their actuators which are used as single platforms for measurements, whereas flexible dynamical systems are kept free from any attached sensors. Based on the action reaction law of dynamics, the well-known disturbance observer is used to determine the incident reaction forces from these dynamical systems on the interface planes with their actuators. Reaction forces are considered as feedback-like signals that can be used as alternatives to the inaccessible system outputs. The sensorless action reaction based motion and vibration control technique is implemented on a flexible system with finite modes and all results are verified experimentally

    Electronic food retailers can satisfy their customers more effectively if they understand how this particular market works. As in other service segments, the emergence of electronic business-to-customer services in the retail food industry poses questions for managers about the design of new food retailing services and the redesign of existing services for delivery through electronic channels. Important topics include characteristics of electronic service offerings, the typical operational configurations used to deliver electronic services, and the ways in which they relate to the effectiveness of electronic service delivery. We address this issue by developing a product-process matrix for understanding and analyzing electronic retailing services in general. We tailor the matrix to food retailing in particular.     Control of a free-flying robot manipulator system

    The development of and test control strategies for self-contained, autonomous free flying space robots are discussed. Such a robot would perform operations in space similar to those currently handled by astronauts during extravehicular activity (EVA). Use of robots should reduce the expense and danger attending EVA both by providing assistance to astronauts and in many cases by eliminating altogether the need for human EVA, thus greatly enhancing the scope and flexibility of space assembly and repair activities. The focus of the work is to develop and carry out a program of research with a series of physical Satellite Robot Simulator Vehicles (SRSV's), two-dimensionally freely mobile laboratory models of autonomous free-flying space robots such as might perform extravehicular functions associated with operation of a space station or repair of orbiting satellites. It is planned, in a later phase, to extend the research to three dimensions by carrying out experiments in the Space Shuttle cargo bay

    This paper analyses the potential of computer games and interactive projects within the learning programmes for cultural heritage institutions through our experiences working in partnership between higher education and a museum. Gamification is cited as a key disruptive technology for the business and enterprise community, and developments in games technology are also driving the expansion of digital media into all different screen spaces, and various platforms. Our research aims to take these as beneficial indicators for pedagogic development, using gaming to support knowledge transfer related to a museum setting, and using the museum as a key scenario for our students to support the practice of game development. Thus gamification is applied as both a topic and a methodology for educational purposes

    Statistical mechanics of neocortical interactions: large-scale EEG influences on molecular processes

    Recent calculations further supports the premise that large-scale synchronous firings of neurons may affect molecular processes. The context is scalp electroencephalography (EEG) during short-term memory (STM) tasks. The mechanism considered is Π=p+qA\mathbf{\Pi} = \mathbf{p} + q \mathbf{A} (SI units) coupling, where p\mathbf{p} is the momenta of free Ca2+\mathrm{Ca}^{2+} waves qq the charge of Ca2+\mathrm{Ca}^{2+} in units of the electron charge, and A\mathbf{A} the magnetic vector potential of current I\mathbf{I} from neuronal minicolumnar firings considered as wires, giving rise to EEG. Data has processed using multiple graphs to identify sections of data to which spline-Laplacian transformations are applied, to fit the statistical mechanics of neocortical interactions (SMNI) model to EEG data, sensitive to synaptic interactions subject to modification by Ca2+\mathrm{Ca}^{2+} waves.Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Theoretical Biolog
