Evaluation of HTTP/DASH Adaptation Algorithms on Vehicular Networks
Video streaming currently accounts for the majority of Internet traffic. One
factor that enables video streaming is HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS), that
allows the users to stream video using a bit rate that closely matches the
available bandwidth from the server to the client. MPEG Dynamic Adaptive
Streaming over HTTP (DASH) is a widely used standard, that allows the clients
to select the resolution to download based on their own estimations. The
algorithm for determining the next segment in a DASH stream is not partof the
standard, but it is an important factor in the resulting playback quality.
Nowadays vehicles are increasingly equipped with mobile communication devices,
and in-vehicle multimedia entertainment systems. In this paper, we evaluate the
performance of various DASH adaptation algorithms over a vehicular network. We
present detailed simulation results highlighting the advantages and
disadvantages of various adaptation algorithms in delivering video content to
vehicular users, and we show how the different adaptation algorithms perform in
terms of throughput, playback interruption time, and number of interruptions
The QUIC Fix for Optimal Video Streaming
Within a few years of its introduction, QUIC has gained traction: a
significant chunk of traffic is now delivered over QUIC. The networking
community is actively engaged in debating the fairness, performance, and
applicability of QUIC for various use cases, but these debates are centered
around a narrow, common theme: how does the new reliable transport built on top
of UDP fare in different scenarios? Support for unreliable delivery in QUIC
remains largely unexplored.
The option for delivering content unreliably, as in a best-effort model,
deserves the QUIC designers' and community's attention. We propose extending
QUIC to support unreliable streams and present a simple approach for
implementation. We discuss a simple use case of video streaming---an
application that dominates the overall Internet traffic---that can leverage the
unreliable streams and potentially bring immense benefits to network operators
and content providers. To this end, we present a prototype implementation that,
by using both the reliable and unreliable streams in QUIC, outperforms both TCP
and QUIC in our evaluations.Comment: Published to ACM CoNEXT Workshop on the Evolution, Performance, and

Intelligent Algorithm for Enhancing MPEG-DASH QoE in eMBMS
[EN] Multimedia streaming is the most demanding and bandwidth hungry application in today¿s world of Internet. MPEG-DASH as a video technology standard is designed for delivering live or on-demand streams in Internet to deliver best quality content with the fewest dropouts and least possible buffering. Hybrid architecture of DASH and eMBMS has attracted a great attention from the telecommunication industry and multimedia services. It is deployed in response to the immense demand in multimedia traffic. However, handover and limited available resources of the system affected on dropping segments of the adaptive video streaming in eMBMS and it creates an adverse impact on Quality of Experience (QoE), which is creating trouble for service providers and network providers towards delivering the service. In this paper, we derive a case study in eMBMS to approach to provide test measures evaluating MPEG-DASH QoE, by defining the metrics are influenced on QoE in eMBMS such as bandwidth and packet loss then we observe the objective metrics like stalling (number, duration and place), buffer length and accumulative video time. Moreover, we build a smart algorithm to predict rate of segments are lost in multicast adaptive video streaming. The algorithm deploys an estimation decision regards how to recover the lost segments. According to the obtained results based on our proposal algorithm, rate of lost segments is highly decreased by comparing to the traditional approach of MPEG-DASH multicast and unicast for high number of users. This work has been partially supported by the Postdoctoral Scholarship Contratos Postdoctorales UPV 2014 (PAID-10-14) of the Universitat Politècnica de València , by the Programa para la Formación de Personal Investigador (FPI-2015-S2-884) of the Universitat Politècnica de València , by the Ministerio de EconomÃa y Competitividad , through the Convocatoria 2014.
