    Hybrid Radio-map for Noise Tolerant Wireless Indoor Localization

    In wireless networks, radio-map based locating techniques are commonly used to cope the complex fading feature of radio signal, in which a radio-map is built by calibrating received signal strength (RSS) signatures at training locations in the offline phase. However, in severe hostile environments, such as in ship cabins where severe shadowing, blocking and multi-path fading effects are posed by ubiquitous metallic architecture, even radio-map cannot capture the dynamics of RSS. In this paper, we introduced multiple feature radio-map location method for severely noisy environments. We proposed to add low variance signature into radio map. Since the low variance signatures are generally expensive to obtain, we focus on the scenario when the low variance signatures are sparse. We studied efficient construction of multi-feature radio-map in offline phase, and proposed feasible region narrowing down and particle based algorithm for online tracking. Simulation results show the remarkably performance improvement in terms of positioning accuracy and robustness against RSS noises than the traditional radio-map method.Comment: 6 pages, 11th IEEE International Conference on Networking, Sensing and Control, April 7-9, 2014, Miami, FL, US

    Indoor navigation systems based on data mining techniques in internet of things: a survey

Internet of Things (IoT) is turning into an essential part of daily life, and numerous IoT-based scenarios will be seen in future of modern cities ranging from small indoor situations to huge outdoor environments. In this era, navigation continues to be a crucial element in both outdoor and indoor environments, and many solutions have been provided in both cases. On the other side, recent smart objects have produced a substantial amount of various data which demands sophisticated data mining solutions to cope with them. This paper presents a detailed review of previous studies on using data mining techniques in indoor navigation systems for the loT scenarios. We aim to understand what type of navigation problems exist in different IoT scenarios with a focus on indoor environments and later on we investigate how data mining solutions can provide solutions on those challenges

    Adaptive indoor positioning model based on WLAN-fingerprinting for dynamic and multi-floor environments

    The Global Positioning System demonstrates the significance of Location Based Services but it cannot be used indoors due to the lack of line of sight between satellites and receivers. Indoor Positioning Systems are needed to provide indoor Location Based Services. Wireless LAN fingerprints are one of the best choices for Indoor Positioning Systems because of their low cost, and high accuracy, however they have many drawbacks: creating radio maps is time consuming, the radio maps will become outdated with any environmental change, different mobile devices read the received signal strength (RSS) differently, and peoples’ presence in LOS between access points and mobile device affects the RSS. This research proposes a new Adaptive Indoor Positioning System model (called DIPS) based on: a dynamic radio map generator, RSS certainty technique and peoples’ presence effect integration for dynamic and multi-floor environments. Dynamic in our context refers to the effects of people and device heterogeneity. DIPS can achieve 98% and 92% positioning accuracy for floor and room positioning, and it achieves 1.2 m for point positioning error. RSS certainty enhanced the positioning accuracy for floor and room for different mobile devices by 11% and 9%. Then by considering the peoples’ presence effect, the error is reduced by 0.2 m. In comparison with other works, DIPS achieves better positioning without extra devices

    Doutoramento em Engenharia EletrotécnicaThis work investigates low cost localization systems (LS) based on received signal strength (RSS) and integrated with different types of antennas with main emphasis on sectorial antennas. The last few years have witnessed an outstanding growth in wireless sensor networks (WSN). Among its various possible applications, the localization field became a major area of research. The localization techniques based on RSS are characterized by simplicity and low cost of integration. The integration of LS based on RSS and sectorial antennas (SA) was proven to provide an effective solution for reducing the number of required nodes of the networks and allows the combination of several techniques, such as RSS and angle of arrival (AoA). This PhD thesis focuses on studying techniques, antennas and protocols that best meet the needs of each LS with main focus on low cost systems based on RSS and AoA. Firstly there are studied localization techniques and system that best suit the requirements of the user and the antennas that are most appropriate according to the nature of the signal. In this step it is intended to provide a fundamental understanding of the undertaken work. Then the developed antennas are presented according to the following categories: sectorial and microstrip antennas. Two sectorial antennas are presented: a narrowband antenna operating at 2.4 to 2.5 GHz and a broadband antenna operating at 800MHz-2.4GHz. The low cost printed antennas were designed to operate at 5 GHz, which may be used for vehicular communication. After presenting the various antennas, several prototypes of indoor/outdoor LS are implemented and analyzed. Localization protocols are also proposed, one based on simplicity and low power, and the other on interoperability with different types of antennas and system requirements.O presente trabalho investiga sistemas de localização (SL) de baixo custo baseados na intensidade do sinal (RSS) e integrados com diferentes tipos de antenas com principal destaque para antenas sectoriais. Os últimos anos testemunharam um crescimento surpreendente de redes de sensores sem fios (RSSF), onde entre diversas aplicações possíveis, a localização tornou-se uma das principais áreas de pesquisa. Técnicas baseadas na intensidade do sinal caracterizam-se pela simplicidade e baixo custo de integração. A integração de SL baseados na intensidade do sinal recebido e antenas sectoriais (AS) oferecem uma solução eficaz para reduzir o número de nós necessários e para combinar diversas técnicas de localização. Esta tese de doutoramento foca-se no estudado de técnicas, antenas e protocolos de acordo com os requisitos de cada sistema localização com especial atenção para sistemas de baixo custo baseados na intensidade do sinal e no ângulo de chegada. Inicialmente são estudadas técnicas e SL de acordo com as necessidades do utilizador e as antenas que melhor se enquadram de acordo com a natureza do sinal. Esta etapa tem como objectivo proporcionar a compreensão fundamental do trabalho desenvolvido. Em seguida são apresentadas as antenas desenvolvidas divididas em: antenas sectorias e antenas impressas de baixo custo. Duas antenas sectoriais são apresentadas: uma de banda estreita a operar a 2,4-2,5GHz e outro de banda larga 800MHz-2.4GHz. As antenas impressas foram desenvolvidas para operar a 5 GHz, pelo que podem ser utilizadas para comunicação veicular. Após apresentação das diversas antenas vários protótipos de SL interiores/exteriores são implementados e analisados. Protocolos de localização são também propostos, um baseado na simplicidade e baixo consumo, outro na interoperabilidade com diferentes tipos de antenas e requisitos do sistema

    Design of an adaptive RF fingerprint indoor positioning system

    RF fingerprinting can solve the indoor positioning problem with satisfactory accuracy, but the methodology depends on the so-called radio map calibrated in the offline phase via manual site-survey, which is costly, time-consuming and somewhat error-prone. It also assumes the RF fingerprint’s signal-spatial correlations to remain static throughout the online positioning phase, which generally does not hold in practice. This is because indoor environments constantly experience dynamic changes, causing the radio signal strengths to fluctuate over time, which weakens the signal-spatial correlations of the RF fingerprints. State-of-the-arts have proposed adaptive RF fingerprint methodology capable of calibrating the radio map in real-time and on-demand to address these drawbacks. However, existing implementations are highly server-centric, which is less robust, does not scale well, and not privacy-friendly. This thesis aims to address these drawbacks by exploring the feasibility of implementing an adaptive RF fingerprint indoor positioning system in a distributed and client-centric architecture using only commodity Wi-Fi hardware, so it can seamlessly integrate with existing Wi-Fi network and allow it to offer both networking and positioning services. Such approach has not been explored in previous works, which forms the basis of this thesis’ main contribution. The proposed methodology utilizes a network of distributed location beacons as its reference infrastructure; hence the system is more robust since it does not have any single point-of-failure. Each location beacon periodically broadcasts its coordinate to announce its presence in the area, plus coefficients that model its real-time RSS distribution around the transmitting antenna. These coefficients are constantly self-calibrated by the location beacon using empirical RSS measurements obtained from neighbouring location beacons in a collaborative fashion, and fitting the values using path loss with log-normal shadowing model as a function of inter-beacon distances while minimizing the error in a least-squared sense. By self-modelling its RSS distribution in real-time, the location beacon becomes aware of its dynamically fluctuating signal levels caused by physical, environmental and temporal characteristics of the indoor environment. The implementation of this self-modelling feature on commodity Wi-Fi hardware is another original contribution of this thesis. Location discovery is managed locally by the clients, which means the proposed system can support unlimited number of client devices simultaneously while also protect user’s privacy because no information is shared with external parties. It starts by listening for beacon frames broadcasted by nearby location beacons and measuring their RSS values to establish the RF fingerprint of the unknown point. Next, it simulates the reference RF fingerprints of predetermined points inside the target area, effectively calibrating the site’s radio map, by computing the RSS values of all detected location beacons using their respective coordinates and path loss coefficients embedded inside the received beacon frames. Note that the coefficients model the real-time RSS distribution of each location beacon around its transmitting antenna; hence, the radio map is able to adapt itself to the dynamic fluctuations of the radio signal to maintain its signal-spatial correlations. The final step is to search the radio map to find the reference RF fingerprint that most closely resembles the unknown sample, where its coordinate is returned as the location result. One positioning approach would be to first construct a full radio map by computing the RSS of all detected location beacons at all predetermined calibration points, then followed by an exhaustive search over all reference RF fingerprints to find the best match. Generally, RF fingerprint algorithm performs better with higher number of calibration points per unit area since more locations can be classified, while extra RSS components can help to better distinguish between nearby calibration points. However, to calibrate and search many RF fingerprints will incur substantial computing costs, which is unsuitable for power and resource limited client devices. To address this challenge, this thesis introduces a novel algorithm suitable for client-centric positioning as another contribution. Given an unknown RF fingerprint to solve for location, the proposed algorithm first sorts the RSS in descending order. It then iterates over this list, first selecting the location beacon with the strongest RSS because this implies the unknown location is closest to the said location beacon. Next, it computes the beacon’s RSS using its path loss coefficients and coordinate information one calibration point at a time while simultaneously compares the result with the measured value. If they are similar, the algorithm keeps this location for subsequent processing; else it is removed because distant points relative to the unknown location would exhibit vastly different RSS values due to the different site-specific obstructions encountered by the radio signal propagation. The algorithm repeats the process by selecting the next strongest location beacon, but this time it only computes its RSS for those points identified in the previous iteration. After the last iteration completes, the average coordinate of remaining calibration points is returned as the location result. Matlab simulation shows the proposed algorithm only takes about half of the time to produce a location estimate with similar positioning accuracy compared to conventional algorithm that does a full radio map calibration and exhaustive RF fingerprint search. As part of the thesis’ contribution, a prototype of the proposed indoor positioning system is developed using only commodity Wi-Fi hardware and open-source software to evaluate its usability in real-world settings and to demonstrate possible implementation on existing Wi-Fi installations. Experimental results verify the proposed system yields consistent positioning accuracy, even in highly dynamic indoor environments and changing location beacon topologies

    Enhancing the museum experience with a sustainable solution based on contextual information obtained from an on-line analysis of users’ behaviour

    Human computer interaction has evolved in the last years in order to enhance users’ experiences and provide more intuitive and usable systems. A major leap through in this scenario is obtained by embedding, in the physical environment, sensors capable of detecting and processing users’ context (position, pose, gaze, ...). Feeded by the so collected information flows, user interface paradigms may shift from stereotyped gestures on physical devices, to more direct and intuitive ones that reduce the semantic gap between the action and the corresponding system reaction or even anticipate the user’s needs, thus limiting the overall learning effort and increasing user satisfaction. In order to make this process effective, the context of the user (i.e. where s/he is, what is s/he doing, who s/he is, what are her/his preferences and also actual perception and needs) must be properly understood. While collecting data on some aspects can be easy, interpreting them all in a meaningful way in order to improve the overall user experience is much harder. This is more evident when we consider informal learning environments like museums, i.e. places that are designed to elicit visitor response towards the artifacts on display and the cultural themes proposed. In such a situation, in fact, the system should adapt to the attention paid by the user choosing the appropriate content for the user’s purposes, presenting an intuitive interface to navigate it. My research goal is focused on collecting, in a simple,unobtrusive, and sustainable way, contextual information about the visitors with the purpose of creating more engaging and personalized experiences

    Self-healing radio maps of wireless networks for indoor positioning

Normalmente os espaços industriais possuem uma infraestrutura Wi-Fi que pode ser usada para localizar pessoas, bens ou veículos, sendo uma oportunidade para aumentar a produtividade. Os mapas de rádio são importantes para os sistemas de posicionamento baseados em Wi-Fi, porque representam o ambiente de rádio e são usados para estimar uma posição. Os mapas de rádio são constituídos por amostras Wi-Fi recolhidas em posições conhecidas e degradam-se ao longo do tempo devido a vários fatores, por exemplo, efeitos de propagação, adição/remoção de APs, entre outros. O processo de construção do mapa de rádio costuma ser exigente em termos de tempo e recursos humanos, constituindo um desafio considerável. Os veículos, que operam em ambientes industriais podem ser explorados para auxiliar na construção de mapas de rádio, desde que seja possível localizá-los e rastreá-los. O objetivo principal desta tese é desenvolver um sistema de posicionamento para veículos industriais com mapas de rádio auto-regenerativos (capaz de manter os mapas de rádio atualizados). Os veículos são localizados através da fusão sensorial de Wi-Fi com sensores de movimento, que permitem anotar novas amostras Wi-Fi para o mapa de rádio auto-regenerativo. São propostas duas abordagens de fusão sensorial, baseadas em Loose Coupling e Tight Coupling, para a localização dos veículos. A abordagem Tight Coupling inclui uma métrica de confiança para determinar quando é que as amostras de Wi-Fi devem ser anotadas. Deste modo, esta solução não requer calibração nem esforço humano para a construção e manutenção do mapa de rádio. Os resultados obtidos em experiências sugerem que esta solução tem potencial para a IoT e a Indústria 4.0, especialmente em serviços de localização, mas também na monitorização, suporte à navegação autónoma, e interconectividade.Industry 4.0 is driving change for new forms of production and real-time optimization in factories, which benefit from the Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities to locate industrial vehicles for monitoring, improving safety, and operations. Most industrial environments have a Wi-Fi infrastructure that can be exploited to locate people, assets, or vehicles, providing an opportunity for enhancing productivity and interconnectivity. Radio maps are important for Wi-Fi-based Indoor Position Systems (IPSs) since they represent the radio environment and are used to estimate a position. Radio maps comprise a set of Wi- Fi samples collected at known positions, and degrade over time due to several aspects, e.g., propagation effects, addition/removal of Access Points (APs), among others, hence they should be periodically updated to maintain the IPS performance. The process to build and maintain radio maps is usually time-consuming and demanding in terms of human resources, thus being challenging to perform. Vehicles, commonly present in industrial environments, can be explored to help build and maintain radio maps, as long as it is possible to locate and track them. The main objective of this thesis is to develop an IPS for industrial vehicles with self-healing radio maps (capable of keeping radio maps up to date). Vehicles are tracked using sensor fusion of Wi-Fi with motion sensors, which allows to annotate new Wi-Fi samples to build the self-healing radio maps. Two sensor fusion approaches based on Loose Coupling and Tight Coupling are proposed to track vehicles. The Tight Coupling approach includes a reliability metric to determine when Wi-Fi samples should be annotated. As a result, this solution does not depend on any calibration or human effort to build and maintain the radio map.
