    Improvement of flight simulator feeling using adaptive fuzzy backlash compensation

    In this paper we addressed the problem of improving the control of DC motors used for the specific application of a 3 degrees of freedom moving base flight simulator. Indeed the presence of backlash in DC motors gearboxes induces shocks and naturally limits the flight feeling. In this paper, dynamic inversion with Fuzzy Logic is used to design an adaptive backlash compensator. The classification property of fuzzy logic techniques makes them a natural candidate for the rejection of errors induced by the backlash. A tuning algorithm is given for the fuzzy logic parameters, so that the output backlash compensation scheme becomes adaptive. The fuzzy backlash compensator is first validated using a realistic model of the mechanical system and is actually tested on the real flight simulator

    A framework for realistic 3D tele-immersion

    Meeting, socializing and conversing online with a group of people using teleconferencing systems is still quite differ- ent from the experience of meeting face to face. We are abruptly aware that we are online and that the people we are engaging with are not in close proximity. Analogous to how talking on the telephone does not replicate the experi- ence of talking in person. Several causes for these differences have been identified and we propose inspiring and innova- tive solutions to these hurdles in attempt to provide a more realistic, believable and engaging online conversational expe- rience. We present the distributed and scalable framework REVERIE that provides a balanced mix of these solutions. Applications build on top of the REVERIE framework will be able to provide interactive, immersive, photo-realistic ex- periences to a multitude of users that for them will feel much more similar to having face to face meetings than the expe- rience offered by conventional teleconferencing systems

    Interoperable services based on activity monitoring in ambient assisted living environments

    Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) is considered as the main technological solution that will enable the aged and people in recovery to maintain their independence and a consequent high quality of life for a longer period of time than would otherwise be the case. This goal is achieved by monitoring human’s activities and deploying the appropriate collection of services to set environmental features and satisfy user preferences in a given context. However, both human monitoring and services deployment are particularly hard to accomplish due to the uncertainty and ambiguity characterising human actions, and heterogeneity of hardware devices composed in an AAL system. This research addresses both the aforementioned challenges by introducing 1) an innovative system, based on Self Organising Feature Map (SOFM), for automatically classifying the resting location of a moving object in an indoor environment and 2) a strategy able to generate context-aware based Fuzzy Markup Language (FML) services in order to maximize the users’ comfort and hardware interoperability level. The overall system runs on a distributed embedded platform with a specialised ceiling- mounted video sensor for intelligent activity monitoring. The system has the ability to learn resting locations, to measure overall activity levels, to detect specific events such as potential falls and to deploy the right sequence of fuzzy services modelled through FML for supporting people in that particular context. Experimental results show less than 20% classification error in monitoring human activities and providing the right set of services, showing the robustness of our approach over others in literature with minimal power consumption

    Qualitative and Quantitative Methods for Estimating the Library and Information Services

    An analysis of statistical data shows that attendance in the libraries falls every year, the demand of library information as the material carrier (for example books) is greatly reduced, but the information in electronic form is in demand, and every year the figures are growing significantly. This paper presents an estimation method for separate and complex indicators of the efficiency of library and information product and service rendering depending on various factors that determine service quality, timeliness and efficiency. A fuzzy logic system to transform the primary data was designed with the "Fuzzy Logic Toolbox" software using MATLAB. The methods to rank the studied factors by their importance and effect on the criteria of the efficiency of library and information product and service rendering are given. It is shown that the quality of library and information services plays an important role in development of society and influences the global socio-economic development and wellbeing. The research application contributes to the optimization of the library helps to more efficiently organize and plan their work, as well as the right to determine the direction of further investment. In addition, it enables the management of the library to identify factors that contribute to improving the efficiency of their businesses, to study the most urgent and important needs of the market library services, and also to establish the factors that currently are essential as for institutions, and for users and consumers

    Real-time Knowledge-based Fuzzy Logic Model for Soft Tissue Deformation

    In this research, the improved mass spring model is presented to simulate the human liver deformation. The underlying MSM is redesigned where fuzzy knowledge-based approaches are implemented to determine the stiffness values. Results show that fuzzy approaches are in very good agreement to the benchmark model. The novelty of this research is that for liver deformation in particular, no specific contributions in the literature exist reporting on real-time knowledge-based fuzzy MSM for liver deformation
