Animal Cognition, Species Invariantism, and Mathematical Realism

What can we infer from numerical cognition about mathematical realism? In this paper, I will consider one aspect of numerical cognition that has received little attention in the literature: the remarkable similarities of numerical cognitive capacities across many animal species. This Invariantism in Numerical Cognition (INC) indicates that mathematics and morality are disanalogous in an important respect: proto-moral beliefs differ substantially between animal species, whereas proto-mathematical beliefs (at least in the animals studied) seem to show more similarities. This makes moral beliefs more susceptible to a contingency challenge from evolution compared to mathematical beliefs, and indicates that mathematical beliefs might be less vulnerable to evolutionary debunking arguments. I will then examine to what extent INC can be used to flesh out a positive case for mathematical realism. Finally, I will review two forms of mathematical realism that are promising in the light of the evolutionary evidence about numerical cognition, ante rem structuralism and Millean empiricism

How Dutch Institutions Enhance the Adaptive Capacity of Society

    Get PDF
This report examines the adaptive capacity of the institutional framework of the Netherlands to cope with the impacts of climate change. Historically, institutions have evolved incrementally to deal with existing social problems. They provide norms and rules for collective action and create continuity rather than change. However, the nature of societal problems is changing as a result of the processes of globalization and development. With the progress made in the natural sciences, we are able to predict in advance, to a certain extent, the potential environmental impacts of various human actions on society, for example, climate change. This raises some key questions: Are our institutions capable of dealing with this new knowledge about future impacts and, more importantly, with the impacts themselves? Are our institutions capable of dealing with the inherent uncertainty of the predictions

Knowledge and the Objection to Religious Belief from Cognitive Science

A large chorus of voices has grown around the claim that theistic belief is epistemically suspect since, as some cognitive scientists have hypothesized, such beliefs are a byproduct of cognitive mechanisms which evolved for rather different adaptive purposes. This paper begins with an overview of the pertinent cognitive science followed by a short discussion of some relevant epistemic concepts. Working from within a largely Williamsonian framework, we then present two different ways in which this research can be formulated into an argument against theistic belief. We argue that neither version work

Knowledge Extraction from Natural Language Requirements into a Semantic Relation Graph

Knowledge extraction and representation aims to identify information and to transform it into a machine-readable format. Knowledge representations support Information Retrieval tasks such as searching for single statements, documents, or metadata. Requirements specifications of complex systems such as automotive software systems are usually divided into different subsystem specifications. Nevertheless, there are semantic relations between individual documents of the separated subsystems, which have to be considered in further processes (e.g. dependencies). If requirements engineers or other developers are not aware of these relations, this can lead to inconsistencies or malfunctions of the overall system. Therefore, there is a strong need for tool support in order to detects semantic relations in a set of large natural language requirements specifications. In this work we present a knowledge extraction approach based on an explicit knowledge representation of the content of natural language requirements as a semantic relation graph. Our approach is fully automated and includes an NLP pipeline to transform unrestricted natural language requirements into a graph. We split the natural language into different parts and relate them to each other based on their semantic relation. In addition to semantic relations, other relationships can also be included in the graph. We envision to use a semantic search algorithm like spreading activation to allow users to search different semantic relations in the graph

A proposed psychological model of driving automation

    Get PDF
This paper considers psychological variables pertinent to driver automation. It is anticipated that driving with automated systems is likely to have a major impact on the drivers and a multiplicity of factors needs to be taken into account. A systems analysis of the driver, vehicle and automation served as the basis for eliciting psychological factors. The main variables to be considered were: feed-back, locus of control, mental workload, driver stress, situational awareness and mental representations. It is expected that anticipating the effects on the driver brought about by vehicle automation could lead to improved design strategies. Based on research evidence in the literature, the psychological factors were assembled into a model for further investigation

Are Dutch Water Safety Institutions Prepared for Climate Change?

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the question to what extent the historically grown Dutch water safety institutions have the capacity to cope with the ‘new’ challenges of climate change. The Adaptive Capacity Wheel provides the methodological framework. The analysis focuses on three recent and major planning practices in the Dutch water safety domain: the development and implementation of the Room for the River project, the flood risk approach, and the Second Delta Plan, respectively. The paper concludes that for the Netherlands, to be prepared for climate change, it is necessary to take a new institutional path, by building capacity to improvise, by investing in and by creating room for collaborative leaders, and by finding ways to generate financial resources for long term innovative measure
