Survey of Inter-satellite Communication for Small Satellite Systems: Physical Layer to Network Layer View
Small satellite systems enable whole new class of missions for navigation,
communications, remote sensing and scientific research for both civilian and
military purposes. As individual spacecraft are limited by the size, mass and
power constraints, mass-produced small satellites in large constellations or
clusters could be useful in many science missions such as gravity mapping,
tracking of forest fires, finding water resources, etc. Constellation of
satellites provide improved spatial and temporal resolution of the target.
Small satellite constellations contribute innovative applications by replacing
a single asset with several very capable spacecraft which opens the door to new
applications. With increasing levels of autonomy, there will be a need for
remote communication networks to enable communication between spacecraft. These
space based networks will need to configure and maintain dynamic routes, manage
intermediate nodes, and reconfigure themselves to achieve mission objectives.
Hence, inter-satellite communication is a key aspect when satellites fly in
formation. In this paper, we present the various researches being conducted in
the small satellite community for implementing inter-satellite communications
based on the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model. This paper also reviews
the various design parameters applicable to the first three layers of the OSI
model, i.e., physical, data link and network layer. Based on the survey, we
also present a comprehensive list of design parameters useful for achieving
inter-satellite communications for multiple small satellite missions. Specific
topics include proposed solutions for some of the challenges faced by small
satellite systems, enabling operations using a network of small satellites, and
some examples of small satellite missions involving formation flying aspects.Comment: 51 pages, 21 Figures, 11 Tables, accepted in IEEE Communications

System modeling and performance evaluation of rate allocation schemes for packet data services in wideband CDMA systems
To fully exploit the potential of a wideband CDMA-based mobile Internet computing system, an efficient algorithm is needed for judiciously performing rate allocation, so as to orchestrate and allocate bandwidth for voice services and high data rate applications. However, in existing standards (e.g., cdma2000), only a first-come-first-served equal sharing allocation algorithm is used, potentially leading to a low bandwidth utilization and inadequate support of high data rate multimedia mobile applications (e.g., video/audio files swapping, multimedia messaging services, etc.). In this paper, we first analytically model the rate allocation problem that captures realistic system constraints such as downlink power limits and control, uplink Interference effects, physical channel adaptation, and soft handoff. We then suggest six efficient rate allocation schemes that are designed based on different philosophies: rate optimal, fairness-based, and user-oriented. Simulations are performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the rate allocation schemes using realistic system parameters In our model.published_or_final_versio
Adaptive Communications for Next Generation Broadband Wireless Access Systems
In Broadband Wireless Access systems the efficient use of the resources is crucial from many points of views. From the operator point of view, the bandwidth is a scarce, valuable, and expensive resource which must be exploited in an efficient manner while the Quality of Service (QoS) provided to the users is guaranteed. On the other hand, a tight delay and link quality constraints are imposed on each data flow hence the user experiences the same quality as in fixed networks. During the last few years many techniques have been developed in order to increase the spectral efficiency and the throughput. Among them, the use of multiple antennas at the transmitter and the receiver (exploiting spatial multiplexing) with the joint optimization of the medium access control layer and the physical layer parameters. In this Ph.D. thesis, different adaptive techniques for B3G multicarrier wireless systems are developed and proposed focusing on the SS-MC-MA and the OFDM(A) (IEEE 802.16a/e/m standards) communication schemes. The research lines emphasize into the adaptation of the transmission having (Partial) knowledge of the Channel State Information for both; single antenna and multiple antenna links. For single antenna links, the implementation of a joint resource allocation and scheduling strategy by including adaptive modulation and coding is investigated. A low complexity resource allocation and scheduling algorithm is proposed with the objective to cope with real- and/or non-real- time requirements and constraints. A special attention is also devoted in reducing the required signalling. However, for multiple antenna links, the performance of a proposed adaptive transmit antenna selection scheme jointly with space-time block coding selection is investigated and compared with conventional structures. In this research line, mainly two optimizations criteria are proposed for spatial link adaptation, one based on the minimum error rate for fixed throughput, and the second focused on the maximisation of the rate for fixed error rate. Finally, some indications are given on how to include the spatial adaptation into the investigated and proposed resource allocation and scheduling process developed for single antenna transmission
Performance Analysis of Network-Assisted Two-Hop D2D Communications
Network-assisted single-hop device-to-device (D2D) communication can increase
the spectral and energy efficiency of cellular networks by taking advantage of
the proximity, reuse, and hop gains when radio resources are properly managed
between the cellular and D2D layers. In this paper we argue that D2D technology
can be used to further increase the spectral and energy efficiency if the key
D2D radio resource management algorithms are suitably extended to support
network assisted multi-hop D2D communications. Specifically, we propose a
novel, distributed utility maximizing D2D power control (PC) scheme that is
able to balance spectral and energy efficiency while taking into account mode
selection and resource allocation constraints that are important in the
integrated cellular-D2D environment. Our analysis and numerical results
indicate that multi-hop D2D communications combined with the proposed PC scheme
can be useful not only for harvesting the potential gains previously identified
in the literature, but also for extending the coverage of cellular networks.Comment: 6 pages and 7 figure
Stochastic Differential Games and Energy-Efficient Power Control
One of the contributions of this work is to formulate the problem of
energy-efficient power control in multiple access channels (namely, channels
which comprise several transmitters and one receiver) as a stochastic
differential game. The players are the transmitters who adapt their power level
to the quality of their time-varying link with the receiver, their battery
level, and the strategy updates of the others. The proposed model not only
allows one to take into account long-term strategic interactions but also
long-term energy constraints. A simple sufficient condition for the existence
of a Nash equilibrium in this game is provided and shown to be verified in a
typical scenario. As the uniqueness and determination of equilibria are
difficult issues in general, especially when the number of players goes large,
we move to two special cases: the single player case which gives us some useful
insights of practical interest and allows one to make connections with the case
of large number of players. The latter case is treated with a mean-field game
approach for which reasonable sufficient conditions for convergence and
uniqueness are provided. Remarkably, this recent approach for large system
analysis shows how scalability can be dealt with in large games and only relies
on the individual state information assumption.Comment: The final publication is available at
