    Integration Protocols for Voice and Data Traffic

    Increasing demands for multimedia services offer integration of multimedia traffic as a hot issue in the future research areas. As a result, in the literature, many multiplexing schemes have been proposed. However, most of them have been implemented with a high complexity, others may be non-effective to satisfy the multiplexing performance criteria, while the rest are still not subjected to a wide range of analysis. Therefore, there is a critical need for comparing some of the recommended multiplexing schemes as well as developing a simple and effective integration protocol while still achieving reasonable bandwidth utilization. This thesis is intended to examine integration protocols for multimedia traffic, with primary focusing on voice-data integration. Firstly, a survey of the existing multiplexing schemes and related issues are presented. Next, an Adaptive Round Robin (ARR) protocol is proposed, as an alternative for voice-data integration, and extensively simulated. Finally, further comparisons, based on computer simulations, are carried out for various multiplexing schemes including Strictly Priority Servicing (SPS), Fixed Round Robin (FRR), Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation/(T1, T2) and Queue Length Threshold (QLT).As a contribution of the thesis, the proposed protocol tries to avoid the drawbacks of the previous multiplexing schemes besides satisfying the multiplexing performance criteria. The protocol differs from the others in that, it gives a limited priority for voice over data, it organizes the incoming packets to the single First-in First-out (FIFO) output buffer rather than the only outgoing scheduling, i.e., all data sources are polled in order according to the adaptation policy; however, before a data source can send a packet, all active voice sources are polled in order. Thus it provides an improvement in voice delay performance without significant effect on data delay performance over previous protocols. In addition, simulation comparisons between various multiplexing schemes have been discussed. In these simulations voice packets are assumed to be generated from on-off sources (talkspurt-silence calls), which is closer to reality and which is not considered in most of the performance analyses of previous schemes

    Energy-efficient wireless communication

    In this chapter we present an energy-efficient highly adaptive network interface architecture and a novel data link layer protocol for wireless networks that provides Quality of Service (QoS) support for diverse traffic types. Due to the dynamic nature of wireless networks, adaptations in bandwidth scheduling and error control are necessary to achieve energy efficiency and an acceptable quality of service. In our approach we apply adaptability through all layers of the protocol stack, and provide feedback to the applications. In this way the applications can adapt the data streams, and the network protocols can adapt the communication parameters

    Deep Space Network information system architecture study

    The purpose of this article is to describe an architecture for the Deep Space Network (DSN) information system in the years 2000-2010 and to provide guidelines for its evolution during the 1990s. The study scope is defined to be from the front-end areas at the antennas to the end users (spacecraft teams, principal investigators, archival storage systems, and non-NASA partners). The architectural vision provides guidance for major DSN implementation efforts during the next decade. A strong motivation for the study is an expected dramatic improvement in information-systems technologies, such as the following: computer processing, automation technology (including knowledge-based systems), networking and data transport, software and hardware engineering, and human-interface technology. The proposed Ground Information System has the following major features: unified architecture from the front-end area to the end user; open-systems standards to achieve interoperability; DSN production of level 0 data; delivery of level 0 data from the Deep Space Communications Complex, if desired; dedicated telemetry processors for each receiver; security against unauthorized access and errors; and highly automated monitor and control

    Network Service Customization: End-Point Perspective (Proposal)

    An important problem with cell-switched technologies such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is the provision of customized multiplexing behavior to applications. This customization takes the form of setting up processes in the network and end-points to meet application Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. The proposed thesis work examines the necessary components of a software architecture to provide QoS in the end-points of a cell-switched network. An architecture has been developed, and the thesis work will refine it using a driving application of the full-feedback teleoperation of a robotics system. Preliminary experimental results indicate that such teleoperation is possible using general-purpose workstations and a lightly-loaded ATM link. An important result of the experimental portion of the thesis work will be a study of the domain of applicability for various resource management techniques

    Evolution of NICNET as an incrementally intelligent network

    The evolution of NICNET, the Computer-Communication network of the National Informatics Centre, is so oriented that integration and globalization are progessively implemented utilizing the latest cost-effective technologies available In the international market. With the choice of SSMA/CDMA based VSAT technology utilizing a C-band transponder, during the nucleating stage of NICNET, the top 500 cities and towns in India have been linked apart from more than 100 sites of mega projects and economically important locations. In the next step, high speed SCPC based VSATs with two-way as well as data broadcast capabilities utilizing a Ku-band transpoder is enabling the realisation of the NICNET InfoHighway linking metropolises and big cities as an overlay network over tile low speed NICNET. Dedicated high speed external gateways provide initial infrastructure for globalization of NICNET. In the next phase, it is planned to introduce software based information networking architecture on NICNET for which the concept of structure-function matrix based incrementally intelligent network design is proposed in this paper. As the demand for sophisticated services like CUGs, virtual private network Service, universal personal communications, mobile communication and multimedia services increase, NICNET will be required to respond with more flexible access, intelligent management and versatile charging regimes than what is possible currently, all within the frame-work of an open system architecture. Imperatives of globalization and service creation will be rendered incrementally intelligent utilising an approach based on intelligent hypermedia with imbedded expert system for realising intelligent navigation and integration. The same AI approach is determined to be advantageous for intelligent integration of traffic and facility with adaptive flexible routing. The design of NICNET as an intelligent global network providing a versatile local infrastructure with multiple gateway hooks to a global network employing low or medium earth orbiting satellite constellation, is identified as a desirable long term goal

    Explicit congestion control algorithms for available bit rate services in asynchronous transfer mode networks

    Congestion control of available bit rate (ABR) services in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks has been the recent focus of the ATM Forum. The focus of this dissertation is to study the impact of queueing disciplines on ABR service congestion control, and to develop an explicit rate control algorithm. Two queueing disciplines, namely, First-In-First-Out (FIFO) and per-VC (virtual connection) queueing, are examined. Performance in terms of fairness, throughput, cell loss rate, buffer size and network utilization are benchmarked via extensive simulations. Implementation complexity analysis and trade-offs associated with each queueing implementation are addressed. Contrary to the common belief, our investigation demonstrates that per-VC queueing, which is costlier and more complex, does not necessarily provide any significant improvement over simple FIFO queueing. A new ATM switch algorithm is proposed to complement the ABR congestion control standard. The algorithm is designed to work with the rate-based congestion control framework recently recommended by the ATM Forum for ABR services. The algorithm\u27s primary merits are fast convergence, high throughput, high link utilization, and small buffer requirements. Mathematical analysis is done to show that the algorithm converges to the max-min fair allocation rates in finite time, and the convergence time is proportional to the distinct number of fair allocations and the round-trip delays in the network. At the steady state, the algorithm operates without causing any oscillations in rates. The algorithm does not require any parameter tuning, and proves to be very robust in a large ATM network. The impact of ATM switching and ATM layer congestion control on the performance of TCP/IP traffic is studied and the results are presented. The study shows that ATM layer congestion control improves the performance of TCP/IP traffic over ATM, and implementing the proposed switch algorithm drastically reduces the required switch buffer requirements. In order to validate claims, many benchmark ATM networks are simulated, and the performance of the switch is evaluated in terms of fairness, link utilization, response time, and buffer size requirements. In terms of performance and complexity, the algorithm proposed here offers many advantages over other proposed algorithms in the literature
