    Adaptive object segmentation and tracking

    Efficient tracking of deformable objects moving with variable velocities is an important current research problem. In this thesis a robust tracking model is proposed for the automatic detection, recognition and tracking of target objects which are subject to variable orientations and velocities and are viewed under variable ambient lighting conditions. The tracking model can be applied to efficiently track fast moving vehicles and other objects in various complex scenarios. The tracking model is evaluated on both colour visible band and infra-red band video sequences acquired from the air by the Sussex police helicopter and other collaborators. The observations made validate the improved performance of the model over existing methods. The thesis is divided in three major sections. The first section details the development of an enhanced active contour for object segmentation. The second section describes an implementation of a global active contour orientation model. The third section describes the tracking model and assesses it performance on the aerial video sequences. In the first part of the thesis an enhanced active contour snake model using the difference of Gaussian (DoG) filter is reported and discussed in detail. An acquisition method based on the enhanced active contour method developed that can assist the proposed tracking system is tested. The active contour model is further enhanced by the use of a disambiguation framework designed to assist multiple object segmentation which is used to demonstrate that the enhanced active contour model can be used for robust multiple object segmentation and tracking. The active contour model developed not only facilitates the efficient update of the tracking filter but also decreases the latency involved in tracking targets in real-time. As far as computational effort is concerned, the active contour model presented improves the computational cost by 85% compared to existing active contour models. The second part of the thesis introduces the global active contour orientation (GACO) technique for statistical measurement of contoured object orientation. It is an overall object orientation measurement method which uses the proposed active contour model along with statistical measurement techniques. The use of the GACO technique, incorporating the active contour model, to measure object orientation angle is discussed in detail. A real-time door surveillance application based on the GACO technique is developed and evaluated on the i-LIDS door surveillance dataset provided by the UK Home Office. The performance results demonstrate the use of GACO to evaluate the door surveillance dataset gives a success rate of 92%. Finally, a combined approach involving the proposed active contour model and an optimal trade-off maximum average correlation height (OT-MACH) filter for tracking is presented. The implementation of methods for controlling the area of support of the OT-MACH filter is discussed in detail. The proposed active contour method as the area of support for the OT-MACH filter is shown to significantly improve the performance of the OT-MACH filter's ability to track vehicles moving within highly cluttered visible and infra-red band video sequence

    This paper describes the implementation of an active mesh that is to be automatically created and configured directly from a single frame of an image sequence The aim of this approach is to use the derived mesh to perform visual tracking in unconstrained motion environments allowing movement of the camera the scene and even the inclusion of background independent moving objects The main problem in initializing this mesh comes from the fact that there is little a priori information about the scene available The paper will discuss methods that are currently available for determining the initial position of active contour models within images also suggesting a method of initializing the active mesh The approach is further extended to using multiple meshes and region initialized meshes

    Online De-Noising of Radar Data using Multi Resolution Analysis

    Target Tracking is an active research area, which encompasses various applications in Defence as well as Commercial applications. For estimating state vectors of tracked objects, Kalman filtering techniques are widely used, and the performance of Kalman filter depends on priory assumptions like state transition models and measurement uncertainties. In practical real time applications, all these priory assumptions are not available always and existing models are not suitable for target dynamics, which have an impact on the tracking quality, and some times filter, may diverge also. Recently Wavelet based multi resolution analysis has become a powerful tool, for image compression and de-noising applications and does not require explicit priory knowledge like Kalman filter for noise suppression. However, It is found that during real time de-noising, wavelet analysis exhibits poor performance due to certain artifacts.     Co-Fusion: Real-time Segmentation, Tracking and Fusion of Multiple Objects

    In this paper we introduce Co-Fusion, a dense SLAM system that takes a live stream of RGB-D images as input and segments the scene into different objects (using either motion or semantic cues) while simultaneously tracking and reconstructing their 3D shape in real time. We use a multiple model fitting approach where each object can move independently from the background and still be effectively tracked and its shape fused over time using only the information from pixels associated with that object label. Previous attempts to deal with dynamic scenes have typically considered moving regions as outliers, and consequently do not model their shape or track their motion over time. In contrast, we enable the robot to maintain 3D models for each of the segmented objects and to improve them over time through fusion.     The analysis of animate object motion using neural networks and snakes

    This paper presents a mechanism for analysing the deformable shape of an object as it moves across the visual field. An object’s outline is detected using active contour models, and is then re-represented as shape, location and rotation invariant axis crossover vectors. These vectors are used as input for a feedforward backpropagation neural network, which provides a confidence value determining how ‘human’ the network considers the given shape to be. The network was trained using simulated human shapes as well as simulated non-human shapes, including dogs, horses and inanimate objects. The network was then tested on unseen objects of these classes, as well as on an unseen object class. Analysis of the network’s confidence values for a given animated object identifies small, individual variations between different objects of the same class, and large variations between object classes. Confidence values for a given object are periodic and parallel the paces being taken by the object

    A fast and robust hand-driven 3D mouse

    The development of new interaction paradigms requires a natural interaction. This means that people should be able to interact with technology with the same models used to interact with everyday real life, that is through gestures, expressions, voice. Following this idea, in this paper we propose a non intrusive vision based tracking system able to capture hand motion and simple hand gestures. The proposed device allows to use the hand as a "natural" 3D mouse, where the forefinger tip or the palm centre are used to identify a 3D marker and the hand gesture can be used to simulate the mouse buttons. The approach is based on a monoscopic tracking algorithm which is computationally fast and robust against noise and cluttered backgrounds. Two image streams are processed in parallel exploiting multi-core architectures, and their results are combined to obtain a constrained stereoscopic problem. The system has been implemented and thoroughly tested in an experimental environment where the 3D hand mouse has been used to interact with objects in a virtual reality application.
