    Reshaping the Museum of Zoology in Rome by Visual Storytelling and Interactive Iconography

    This article summarizes the concept of a new immersive and interactive setting for the Zoology Museum in Rome, Italy. The concept, co-designed with all the museum’s curators, is aimed at enhancing the experiential involvement of the visitors by visual storytelling and interactive iconography. Thanks to immersive and interactive technologies designed by Centro Studi Logos, developed by Logosnet and known as e-REALâ and MirrorMeä, zoological findings and memoirs come to life and interact directly with the visitors in order to deepen their understanding, visualize stories and live experiences, and interact with the founder of the Museum (Mr. Arrigoni degli Oddi) who is now a virtualized avatar, or digital human, able to talk with the visitors. All the interactions are powered through simple hand gestures and, in a few cases, vocal inputs that transform into recognized commands from multimedia systems

    Integrating Edge Computing and Software Defined Networking in Internet of Things: A Systematic Review

    The Internet of Things (IoT) has transformed our interaction with the world by connecting devices, sensors, and systems to the Internet, enabling real-time monitoring, control, and automation in various applications such as smart cities, healthcare, transportation, homes, and grids. However, challenges related to latency, privacy, and bandwidth have arisen due to the massive influx of data generated by IoT devices and the limitations of traditional cloud-based architectures. Moreover, network management, interoperability, security, and scalability issues have emerged due to the rapid growth and heterogeneous nature of IoT devices. To overcome such problems, researchers proposed a new architecture called Software Defined Networking for Edge Computing in the Internet of Things (SDN-EC-IoT), which combines Edge Computing for the Internet of Things (EC-IoT) and Software Defined Internet of Things (SDIoT). Although researchers have studied EC-IoT and SDIoT as individual architectures, they have not yet addressed the combination of both, creating a significant gap in our understanding of SDN-EC-IoT. This paper aims to fill this gap by presenting a comprehensive review of how the SDN-EC-IoT paradigm can solve IoT challenges. To achieve this goal, this study conducted a literature review covering 74 articles published between 2019 and 2023. Finally, this paper identifies future research directions for SDN-EC-IoT, including the development of interoperability platforms, scalable architectures, low latency and Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees, efficient handling of big data, enhanced security and privacy, optimized energy consumption, resource-aware task offloading, and incorporation of machine learnin

    Design of an E-learning system using semantic information and cloud computing technologies

    Humanity is currently suffering from many difficult problems that threaten the life and survival of the human race. It is very easy for all mankind to be affected, directly or indirectly, by these problems. Education is a key solution for most of them. In our thesis we tried to make use of current technologies to enhance and ease the learning process. We have designed an e-learning system based on semantic information and cloud computing, in addition to many other technologies that contribute to improving the educational process and raising the level of students. The design was built after much research on useful technology, its types, and examples of actual systems that were previously discussed by other researchers. In addition to the proposed design, an algorithm was implemented to identify topics found in large textual educational resources. It was tested and proved to be efficient against other methods. The algorithm has the ability of extracting the main topics from textual learning resources, linking related resources and generating interactive dynamic knowledge graphs. This algorithm accurately and efficiently accomplishes those tasks even for bigger books. We used Wikipedia Miner, TextRank, and Gensim within our algorithm. Our algorithm‘s accuracy was evaluated against Gensim, largely improving its accuracy. Augmenting the system design with the implemented algorithm will produce many useful services for improving the learning process such as: identifying main topics of big textual learning resources automatically and connecting them to other well defined concepts from Wikipedia, enriching current learning resources with semantic information from external sources, providing student with browsable dynamic interactive knowledge graphs, and making use of learning groups to encourage students to share their learning experiences and feedback with other learners.Programa de Doctorado en Ingeniería Telemática por la Universidad Carlos III de MadridPresidente: Luis Sánchez Fernández.- Secretario: Luis de la Fuente Valentín.- Vocal: Norberto Fernández Garcí

    ONLINE INTERACTIVE TOOL FOR LEARNING LOGIC

    This dissertation presents the design and implementation of an online platform for solving logic exercises, aimed at complementing theoretical classes for students of logicrelated courses at the University of Nova Lisbon. The platform is integrated with a Learning Management System (LMS) using the LTI protocol, allowing instructors to grade students’ work. We provide an overview of related literature and detailed explanations of each component of the platform, including the design of logic exercises and their integration with the LMS. Additionally, we discuss the challenges and difficulties faced during the development process. The main contributions of this work are the platform itself, a guide on integrating an external tool with LTI, and the implementation of the tool with the LTI learning platform. Our results and evaluations show that the platform is effective for enhancing online learning experiences and improving assessment methods. In conclusion, this dissertation provides a valuable resource for educational institutions seeking to improve their online learning offerings and assessment practices.Esta dissertação apresenta o design e a implementação de uma plataforma online para resolver exercícios de lógica, com o objetivo de complementar as aulas teóricas para estudantes de cursos relacionados à lógica na Universidade de Nova Lisboa. A plataforma está integrada a um Sistema de Gestão de Aprendizagem (SGA) usando o protocolo LTI, permitindo que os instrutores avaliem o trabalho de seus alunos. Oferecemos uma visão geral da literatura relacionada e explicações detalhadas de cada componente da plataforma, incluindo o design dos exercícios de lógica e sua integração com o SGA. Além disso, discutimos os desafios e dificuldades enfrentados durante o processo de desenvolvimento. As principais contribuições deste trabalho são a própria plataforma, um guia sobre a integração de uma ferramenta externa com o LTI e a implementação da ferramenta na plataforma de aprendizagem LTI.     Recent years have seen the arise of some early attempts to build virtual cities, utopias or affective dystopias in an embodied Internet, which in some respects appear to be the ultimate expression of the neoliberal city paradigma (even if virtual). Although there is an extensive disciplinary literature on the relationship between planning and virtual or augmented reality linked mainly to the gaming industry, this often avoids design and value issues. The observation of some of these early experiences - Decentraland, Minecraft, Liberland Metaverse, to name a few - poses important questions and problems that are gradually becoming inescapable for designers and urban planners, and allows us to make some partial considerations on the risks and potentialities of these early virtual cities

    Energy-Sustainable IoT Connectivity: Vision, Technological Enablers, Challenges, and Future Directions

    Technology solutions must effectively balance economic growth, social equity, and environmental integrity to achieve a sustainable society. Notably, although the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm constitutes a key sustainability enabler, critical issues such as the increasing maintenance operations, energy consumption, and manufacturing/disposal of IoT devices have long-term negative economic, societal, and environmental impacts and must be efficiently addressed. This calls for self-sustainable IoT ecosystems requiring minimal external resources and intervention, effectively utilizing renewable energy sources, and recycling materials whenever possible, thus encompassing energy sustainability. In this work, we focus on energy-sustainable IoT during the operation phase, although our discussions sometimes extend to other sustainability aspects and IoT lifecycle phases. Specifically, we provide a fresh look at energy-sustainable IoT and identify energy provision, transfer, and energy efficiency as the three main energy-related processes whose harmonious coexistence pushes toward realizing self-sustainable IoT systems. Their main related technologies, recent advances, challenges, and research directions are also discussed. Moreover, we overview relevant performance metrics to assess the energy-sustainability potential of a certain technique, technology, device, or network and list some target values for the next generation of wireless systems.     The nexus between e-marketing, e-service quality, e-satisfaction and e-loyalty: a cross-sectional study within the context of online SMEs in Ghana

    The spread of the Internet, the proliferation of mobile devices, and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic have given impetus to online shopping in Ghana and the subregion. This situation has also created opportunities for SMEs to take advantage of online marketing technologies. However, there is a dearth of studies on the link between e-marketing and e-loyalty in terms of online shopping, thereby creating a policy gap on the prospects for business success for online SMEs in Ghana. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between the main independent variable, e-marketing and the main dependent variable, e-loyalty, as well as the mediating roles of e-service quality and e-satisfaction in the link between e-marketing and e-loyalty. The study adopted a positivist stance with a quantitative method. The study was cross-sectional in nature with the adoption of a descriptive correlational design. A Structural Equation Modelling approach was employed to examine the nature of the associations between the independent, mediating and dependent variables. A sensitivity analysis was also conducted to control for the potential confounding effects of the demographic factors. A sample size of 1,293 residents in Accra, Ghana, who had previously shopped online, responded to structured questionnaire in an online survey via Google Docs. The IBM SPSS Amos 24 software was used to analyse the data collected. Positive associations were found between the key constructs in the study: e-marketing, e-service quality, e-satisfaction and e-Loyalty. The findings from the study gave further backing to the diffusion innovation theory, resource-based view theory, and technology acceptance model. In addition, e-service quality and e-satisfaction individually and jointly mediated the relationship between e-marketing and e-loyalty. However, these mediations were partial, instead of an originally anticipated full mediation. In terms of value and contribution, this is the first study in a developing economy context to undertake a holistic examination of the key marketing performance variables within an online shopping context. The study uniquely tested the mediation roles of both e-service quality and e-satisfaction in the link between e-marketing and e-loyalty. The findings of the study are novel in the e-marketing literature as they unearthed the key antecedents of e-loyalty for online SMEs in a developing economy context. The study suggested areas for further related studies and also highlighted the limitations
