    Design space explorations for streaming accelerators using streaming architectural simulator

    In the recent years streaming accelerators like GPUs have been pop-up as an effective step towards parallel computing. The wish-list for these devices span from having a support for thousands of small cores to a nature very close to the general purpose computing. This makes the design space very vast for the future accelerators containing thousands of parallel streaming cores. This complicates to exercise a right choice of the architectural configuration for the next generation devices. However, accurate design space exploration tools developed for the massively parallel architectures can ease this task. The main objectives of this work are twofold. (i) We present a complete environment of a trace driven simulator named SArcs (Streaming Architectural Simulator) for the streaming accelerators. (ii) We use our simulation tool-chain for the design space explorations of the GPU like streaming architectures. Our design space explorations for different architectural aspects of a GPU like device a e with reference to a base line established for NVIDIA's Fermi architecture (GPU Tesla C2050). The explored aspects include the performation effects by the variations in the configurations of Streaming Multiprocessors Global Memory Bandwidth, Channles between SMs down to Memory Hierarchy and Cache Hierarchy. The explorations are performed using application kernels from Vector Reduction, 2D-Convolution. Matrix-Matrix Multiplication and 3D-Stencil. Results show that the configurations of the computational resources for the current Fermi GPU device can deliver higher performance with further improvement in the global memory bandwidth for the same device.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft

    HAEC-SIM: A Simulation Framework for Highly Adaptive Energy-Efficient Computing Platforms

    This work presents a new trace-based parallel discrete event simulation framework designed for predicting the behavior of a novel computing platform running energy-aware parallel applications. Discrete event traces capture the runtime be- havior of parallel applications on existing systems and form the basis for the simulation. The simulation framework pro- cesses the events of the input trace by applying simulation models that modify event properties. Thus, the output are again event traces that describe the predicted application behavior on the simulated target platform. Both input and simulated traces can be visualized and analyzed with estab- lished tools. The modular design of the framework enables the simulation of different aspects such as temporal perfor- mance and energy efficiency by applying distinct simulation models e.g.: (i) A performance model for communication that allows to evaluate the target communication topology and link properties. (ii) An energy model for computations that is based on measurements of current hardware. We showcase the potential of this simulation by simulating the execution of benchmark applications to explore design al- ternatives of highly adaptive and energy-efficient computing applications and platforms

    GPU-based implementation of real-time system for spiking neural networks

    Real-time simulations of biological neural networks (BNNs) provide a natural platform for applications in a variety of fields: data classification and pattern recognition, prediction and estimation, signal processing, control and robotics, prosthetics, neurological and neuroscientific modeling. BNNs possess inherently parallel architecture and operate in continuous signal domain. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are type of BNNs with reduced signal dynamic range: communication between neurons occurs by means of time-stamped events (spikes). SNNs allow reduction of algorithmic complexity and communication data size at a price of little loss in accuracy. Simulation of SNNs using traditional sequential computer architectures results in significant time penalty. This penalty prohibits application of SNNs in real-time systems. Graphical processing units (GPUs) are cost effective devices specifically designed to exploit parallel shared memory-based floating point operations applied not only to computer graphics, but also to scientific computations. This makes them an attractive solution for SNN simulation compared to that of FPGA, ASIC and cluster message passing computing systems. Successful implementations of GPU-based SNN simulations have been already reported. The contribution of this thesis is the development of a scalable GPU-based realtime system that provides initial framework for design and application of SNNs in various domains. The system delivers an interface that establishes communication with neurons in the network as well as visualizes the outcome produced by the network. Accuracy of the simulation is emphasized due to its importance in the systems that exploit spike time dependent plasticity, classical conditioning and learning. As a result, a small network of 3840 Izhikevich neurons implemented as a hybrid system with Parker-Sochacki numerical integration method achieves real time operation on GTX260 device. This conversion was performed to allow assessment of digital technology applications to supersonic cruise aircraft.     Pipelining the Fast Multipole Method over a Runtime System

    Fast Multipole Methods (FMM) are a fundamental operation for the simulation of many physical problems. The high performance design of such methods usually requires to carefully tune the algorithm for both the targeted physics and the hardware. In this paper, we propose a new approach that achieves high performance across architectures. Our method consists of expressing the FMM algorithm as a task flow and employing a state-of-the-art runtime system, StarPU, in order to process the tasks on the different processing units. We carefully design the task flow, the mathematical operators, their Central Processing Unit (CPU) and Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) implementations, as well as scheduling schemes. We compute potentials and forces of 200 million particles in 48.7 seconds on a homogeneous 160 cores SGI Altix UV 100 and of 38 million particles in 13.34 seconds on a heterogeneous 12 cores Intel Nehalem processor enhanced with 3 Nvidia M2090 Fermi GPUs.Comment: No. RR-7981 (2012

    Improving latency tolerance of multithreading through decoupling

    The increasing hardware complexity of dynamically scheduled superscalar processors may compromise the scalability of this organization to make an efficient use of future increases in transistor budget. SMT processors, designed over a superscalar core, are therefore directly concerned by this problem. The article presents and evaluates a novel processor microarchitecture which combines two paradigms: simultaneous multithreading and access/execute decoupling. Since its decoupled units issue instructions in order, this architecture is significantly less complex, in terms of critical path delays, than a centralized out-of-order design, and it is more effective for future growth in issue-width and clock speed. We investigate how both techniques complement each other. Since decoupling features an excellent memory latency hiding efficiency, the large amount of parallelism exploited by multithreading may be used to hide the latency of functional units and keep them fully utilized. The study shows that, by adding decoupling to a multithreaded architecture, fewer threads are needed to achieve maximum throughput. Therefore, in addition to the obvious hardware complexity reduction, it places lower demands on the memory system. The study also reveals that multithreading by itself exhibits little memory latency tolerance. Results suggest that most of the latency hiding effectiveness of SMT architectures comes from the dynamic scheduling. On the other hand, decoupling is very effective at hiding memory latency. An increase in the cache miss penalty from 1 to 32 cycles reduces the performance of a 4-context multithreaded decoupled processor by less than 2 percent.     Selective, accurate, and timely self-invalidation using last-touch prediction

    Communication in cache-coherent distributed shared memory (DSM) often requires invalidating (or writing back) cached copies of a memory block, incurring high overheads. This paper proposes Last-Touch Predictors (LTPs) that learn and predict the “last touch ” to a memory block by one processor before the block is accessed and subsequently invalidated by another. By predicting a last-touch and (self-)invalidating the block in advance, an LTP hides the invalidation time, significantly reducing the coherence overhead. The key behind accurate last-touch prediction is tracebased correlation, associating a last-touch with the sequence of instructions (i.e., a trace) touching the block from a coherence miss until the block is invalidated. Correlating instructions enables an LTP to identify a last-touch to a memory block uniquely throughout an application’s execution. In this paper, we use results from running shared-memory applications on a simulated DSM to evaluate LTPs. The results indicate that: (1) our base case LTP design, maintaining trace signatures on a per-block basis, substantially improves prediction accuracy over previous self-invalidation schemes to an average of 79%; (2) our alternative LTP design, maintaining a global trace signature table, reduces storage overhead but only achieves an average accuracy of 58%; (3) last-touch prediction based on a single instruction only achieves an average accuracy of 41 % due to instruction reuse within and across computation; and (4) LTP enables selective, accurate, and timely self-invalidation in DSM, speeding up program execution on average by 11%.
