    Accelerating Spatial Range Queries

    It is increasingly common for domain scientists to use computational tools to build and simulate spatial models of the phenomena they are studying. The spatial models they build are more and more detailed as well as dense and are consequently difficult to manage with today's tools. A crucial problem when analyzing spatial models of increasing detail is the scalable execution of range queries. State-of-the-art approaches like the R-Tree perform suboptimally on today's models and do not scale for more dense, future models. The problem is that the amount of overlap in the tree structure increases as a function of the level of detail/density in the model. In this demonstration we showcase ZOOM, a new tool to efficiently execute spatial range queries on increasingly detailed (denser) models. ZOOM is based on FLAT, a novel range query execution approach that effectively decouples the query execution time from the density of the dataset, thereby ensuring efficient query execution. At the core of the demonstration thus is the visualization of the novel query execution strategy of FLAT which we contrast with a visualization of the query execution of the R-Tree

    GPU LSM: A Dynamic Dictionary Data Structure for the GPU

    We develop a dynamic dictionary data structure for the GPU, supporting fast insertions and deletions, based on the Log Structured Merge tree (LSM). Our implementation on an NVIDIA K40c GPU has an average update (insertion or deletion) rate of 225 M elements/s, 13.5x faster than merging items into a sorted array. The GPU LSM supports the retrieval operations of lookup, count, and range query operations with an average rate of 75 M, 32 M and 23 M queries/s respectively. The trade-off for the dynamic updates is that the sorted array is almost twice as fast on retrievals.     QUASII: QUery-Aware Spatial Incremental Index.

    With large-scale simulations of increasingly detailed models and improvement of data acquisition technologies, massive amounts of data are easily and quickly created and collected. Traditional systems require indexes to be built before analytic queries can be executed efficiently. Such an indexing step requires substantial computing resources and introduces a considerable and growing data-to-insight gap where scientists need to wait before they can perform any analysis. Moreover, scientists often only use a small fraction of the data - the parts containing interesting phenomena - and indexing it fully does not always pay off. In this paper we develop a novel incremental index for the exploration of spatial data. Our approach, QUASII, builds a data-oriented index as a side-effect of query execution. QUASII distributes the cost of indexing across all queries, while building the index structure only for the subset of data queried. It reduces data-to-insight time and curbs the cost of incremental indexing by gradually and partially sorting the data, while producing a data-oriented hierarchical structure at the same time. As our experiments show, QUASII reduces the data-to-insight time by up to a factor of 11.4x, while its performance converges to that of the state-of-the-art static indexes

    Answering Spatial Multiple-Set Intersection Queries Using 2-3 Cuckoo Hash-Filters

    We show how to answer spatial multiple-set intersection queries in O(n(log w)/w + kt) expected time, where n is the total size of the t sets involved in the query, w is the number of bits in a memory word, k is the output size, and c is any fixed constant. This improves the asymptotic performance over previous solutions and is based on an interesting data structure, known as 2-3 cuckoo hash-filters. Our results apply in the word-RAM model (or practical RAM model), which allows for constant-time bit-parallel operations, such as bitwise AND, OR, NOT, and MSB (most-significant 1-bit), as exist in modern CPUs and GPUs. Our solutions apply to any multiple-set intersection queries in spatial data sets that can be reduced to one-dimensional range queries, such as spatial join queries for one-dimensional points or sets of points stored along space-filling curves, which are used in GIS applications.Comment: Full version of paper from 2017 ACM SIGSPATIAL International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information System

    High-dimensional approximate nearest neighbor: k-d Generalized Randomized Forests

    We propose a new data-structure, the generalized randomized kd forest, or kgeraf, for approximate nearest neighbor searching in high dimensions. In particular, we introduce new randomization techniques to specify a set of independently constructed trees where search is performed simultaneously, hence increasing accuracy. We omit backtracking, and we optimize distance computations, thus accelerating queries. We release public domain software geraf and we compare it to existing implementations of state-of-the-art methods including BBD-trees, Locality Sensitive Hashing, randomized kd forests, and product quantization. Experimental results indicate that our method would be the method of choice in dimensions around 1,000, and probably up to 10,000, and pointsets of cardinality up to a few hundred thousands or even one million; this range of inputs is encountered in many critical applications today. For instance, we handle a real dataset of 10610^6 images represented in 960 dimensions with a query time of less than 11sec on average and 90\% responses being true nearest neighbors
