This brief article has its origins in the late 1960s, but has been inspired by more recent work in the last two or three years. Howard Bergerson, the then editor of Word Ways, wrote me in July 1969 asking if I could help fill any of the gaps in the list of words sent him by Ross Eckler, a list of words using the vowels AEIOU in the 120 different orders possible. Along with Dmitri Borgmann, I modestly filled a few gaps. The extended list eventually found its way into print as Ross Eckler\u27s article Unsociable Housemaid Discourages Facetious Behaviour which appeared in the November 1969 Word Ways

    AEIOU: A Thirty-Year Quest

My FAVOURITE words are those in which the five vowels A.E.I.O and U each occur just once. They are referred to as AEIOU words. Over the last thirty years, Word Ways contributors have tried to find examples of these words to satisfy all 120 permutations of the five vowels. Whilst it is relatively easy to find several examples for many of the permutations, for others it is a struggle to find even one. Here, to begin with, is the story of the AEIOU quest

    AEIOU: Supervocalics in Webster\u27s Third

FOUNDING FATHERS and WOMAN SUFFRAGISTS, get out your FOUNTAIN PENS-it\u27s time for another visit to the world of AEIOU. To do justice to my fascination with all things AEIOU, I recently introduced the term SUPERVOCALIC to refer to any item, be it word, phrase or proper noun, containing each of the five vowels once and only once, and no Y. The term is modeled on the existing word \u27univocalic\u27 which describes a word or phrase that contains only one vowel (potentially repeated, as in \u27Mississippi\u27 or Ellen DeGeneres\u27). It has the added appeal of being self-referential, that is to say \u27supervocalic\u27 it self supervocalic
