MANAGING EXPERT SYSTEMS: A Framework and Case Study

This paper addresses the problem of managing the development and implementation of a large expert system in an organization. A traditional systems analysis and design methodology is used as a framework to highlight similarities and differences in managing large scale traditional computer based projects and large expert systems. As a non-technical, prescriptive guide, this article focuses on defining at each stage in the project, the tasks to be accomplished, resources required, impact on the organization, likely benefits and potential problems. The case of a large expert system implemented by a multi-national corporation across several European sites is used to clarify and expand upon the management guidelines provided.Information Systems Working Papers Serie

A computer program for processing impedance cardiographic data: Improving accuracy through user-interactive software

This report contains the source code and documentation for a computer program used to process impedance cardiography data. The cardiodynamic measures derived from impedance cardiography are ventricular stroke column, cardiac output, cardiac index and Heather index. The program digitizes data collected from the Minnesota Impedance Cardiograph, Electrocardiography (ECG), and respiratory cycles and then stores these data on hard disk. It computes the cardiodynamic functions using interactive graphics and stores the means and standard deviations of each 15-sec data epoch on floppy disk. This software was designed on a Digital PRO380 microcomputer and used version 2.0 of P/OS, with (minimally) a 4-channel 16-bit analog/digital (A/D) converter. Applications software is written in FORTRAN 77, and uses Digital's Pro-Tool Kit Real Time Interface Library, CORE Graphic Library, and laboratory routines. Source code can be readily modified to accommodate alternative detection, A/D conversion and interactive graphics. The object code utilizing overlays and multitasking has a maximum of 50 Kbytes

Indexing and retrieval in digital libraries : developing taxonomies for a repository of decision technologies

DecisionNet is an online Internet-based repository of decision technologies. It links remote users with these technologies and provides a directory service to enable search and selection of suitable technologies. The ability to retrieve relevant objects through search mechanisms is basic to any repository's success and usability and depends on effective classification of the decision technologies. This thesis develops classification methods to enable indexing of the DecisionNet repository. Existing taxonomies for software and other online repositories are examined. Criteria and principles for a good taxonomy are established and systematically applied to develop DecisionNet taxonomies. A database design is developed to store the taxonomies and to classify the technologies in the repository. User interface issues for navigation of a hierarchical classification system are discussed. A user interface for remote World Wide Web users is developed. This user interface is designed for browsing the taxonomy structure and creating search parameters online.
