Excellentia Eminentia Effectio
"In these pages you will learn about the fascinating research endeavors that each of our faculty members is undertaking. We have divided their research into the broad categories of health, sustainability, information, and systems. While we recognize the imperfect nature of categorizing research that, by its very nature may be interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary, we nonetheless believe it will be helpful as a way to see the depth and breadth of our research endeavors within each grouping. As you read the profiles on these pages, I know you will begin to appreciate that, taken as a whole, the research spectrum at Columbia Engineering is exceptional and that, as our professors go about their work, they are at the cusp of making breakthroughs that will have a major impact on the way we live our lives today and tomorrow.
Innovative Remote Smart Home for Immersive Engagement
An openly accessible, remotely operated smart home will be demonstrated as a tool for students to learn about residential energy usage and environmental impacts. Specifically, the demonstration unit provides classrooms an engaging experience that teaches students about energy efficiency technologies and how their behavior will have an impact on energy usage and the environment. It is expected that as students become aware of and understand how various energy efficiency technologies work barriers to their adoption will be lowered. The use of a web accessible, remote laboratory dramatically reduces lab setup time and equipment cost/space requirements for educators. Special attention is given to the web based interface to ensure the system is easy to use and requires only a standard web browser in order to operate. The interface also includes a video link so the user can feel that they are working with real hardware in real time and not using a simulation or virtual facility. An associated website provides a self-scheduling tool to provide access to the system and a resource for related background information on smart grid and residential energy efficiency technologies. In addition, supporting instructional materials that coincide with NGSS standards are available via download

Selected aspects of IBL in STEM-education
This article focuses on an important category of modern education in
contemporary society based on innovation as well as SMART, and analyses
Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL), inquiry-based science education (IBSE), problembased
learning and project-based learning in the context of STEM education. “At
the third millennium in the midst of the digital age, it is expected that emerging
technologies will be able to accelerate scientific literacy and enable the majority of
citizens to enjoy the blessing of STEM.“ (Chen, 2017: XV) Additionally, the
authors analyse advantages and some aspects STEM education, contemporary
trends in modern professions and present several examples of good practice. The
article also presents the results of research carried out among academic staff,
teachers and students on educational trends and technologies. The survey showed
a huge gap between the students’ needs and the proposals for organizing the
educational process put forward by teachers and academic staff. Interdisciplinarity
- an important concept related to STEM-education is highlighted. The authors
describe and compare educational technologies, IBL, PBL, PrBL. The stages of
IBL provide an opportunity to analyse and implement educational technology in
the educational process. In particular, the authors offer instruments for IBL. One
of them is the creation of an inquiry learning space Go-Labs that allows for
connecting different applications to organize activities at all stages of the research
process

Teens in Queens: Engaging Teens Living in Queens, New York through Museum Partnerships
The teen program presented in this document was inspired by my own experiences living and attending school in Queens, New York. This program is designed as a museum partnership between the New York Hall of Science, the Queens Museum, and the Queens County Farm Museum, for the benefit of middle school adolescents living or attending school in Queens, New York. This year long program exposes teens to local museums, connecting three different content areas (STEM, art, and agriculture) in museum settings. During the program, teens will engage with their community on a deeper level, learn through skill based activities, explore social issues through art, and gain knowledge of sustainable agriculture. An exhibition displaying a project of their choice will be displayed at the end of the year. This program seeks out three major goals: to meaningfully engage teens in museum settings, establish mentor relationships between teens and museum educators, and to make connections to their communities and everyday lives. This proposal includes how to execute this type of programming, why it is important, along with curriculum and lesson plans
