    Not Every Couple Is a Pair: A Supervised Approach for Lifetime Collaborator Identification

    While scientific collaboration can be critical for a scholar, some collaborator(s) can be more significant than others, a.k.a. lifetime collaborator(s). This work-in-progress aims to investigate whether it is possible to predict/identify lifetime collaborators given a junior scholar\u27s early profile. For this purpose, we propose a supervised approach by leveraging scholars\u27 local and network properties. Extensive experiments on DBLP digital library demonstrate that lifetime collaborators can be accurately predicted. The proposed model outperforms baseline models with various predictors. Our study may shed light on the exploration of scientific collaborations from the perspective of life-long collaboration

    Data-driven Computational Social Science: A Survey

    Social science concerns issues on individuals, relationships, and the whole society. The complexity of research topics in social science makes it the amalgamation of multiple disciplines, such as economics, political science, and sociology, etc. For centuries, scientists have conducted many studies to understand the mechanisms of the society. However, due to the limitations of traditional research methods, there exist many critical social issues to be explored. To solve those issues, computational social science emerges due to the rapid advancements of computation technologies and the profound studies on social science. With the aids of the advanced research techniques, various kinds of data from diverse areas can be acquired nowadays, and they can help us look into social problems with a new eye. As a result, utilizing various data to reveal issues derived from computational social science area has attracted more and more attentions. In this paper, to the best of our knowledge, we present a survey on data-driven computational social science for the first time which primarily focuses on reviewing application domains involving human dynamics. The state-of-the-art research on human dynamics is reviewed from three aspects: individuals, relationships, and collectives. Specifically, the research methodologies used to address research challenges in aforementioned application domains are summarized. In addition, some important open challenges with respect to both emerging research topics and research methods are discussed.Comment: 28 pages, 8 figure

    Complex Network Analysis for Scientific Collaboration Prediction and Biological Hypothesis Generation

    With the rapid development of digitalized literature, more and more knowledge has been discovered by computational approaches. This thesis addresses the problem of link prediction in co-authorship networks and protein--protein interaction networks derived from the literature. These networks (and most other types of networks) are growing over time and we assume that a machine can learn from past link creations by examining the network status at the time of their creation. Our goal is to create a computationally efficient approach to recommend new links for a node in a network (e.g., new collaborations in co-authorship networks and new interactions in protein--protein interaction networks). We consider edges in a network that satisfies certain criteria as training instances for the machine learning algorithms. We analyze the neighborhood structure of each node and derive the topological features. Furthermore, each node has rich semantic information when linked to the literature and can be used to derive semantic features. Using both types of features, we train machine learning models to predict the probability of connection for the new node pairs. We apply our idea of link prediction to two distinct networks: a co-authorship network and a protein--protein interaction network. We demonstrate that the novel features we derive from both the network topology and literature content help improve link prediction accuracy.
