A Learning-based Stochastic MPC Design for Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control to Handle Interfering Vehicles
Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communication has a great potential to improve
reaction accuracy of different driver assistance systems in critical driving
situations. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC), which is an automated
application, provides drivers with extra benefits such as traffic throughput
maximization and collision avoidance. CACC systems must be designed in a way
that are sufficiently robust against all special maneuvers such as cutting-into
the CACC platoons by interfering vehicles or hard braking by leading cars. To
address this problem, a Neural- Network (NN)-based cut-in detection and
trajectory prediction scheme is proposed in the first part of this paper. Next,
a probabilistic framework is developed in which the cut-in probability is
calculated based on the output of the mentioned cut-in prediction block.
Finally, a specific Stochastic Model Predictive Controller (SMPC) is designed
which incorporates this cut-in probability to enhance its reaction against the
detected dangerous cut-in maneuver. The overall system is implemented and its
performance is evaluated using realistic driving scenarios from Safety Pilot

Wireless Network-Level Partial Relay Cooperation: A Stable Throughput Analysis
In this work, we study the benefit of partial relay cooperation. We consider
a two-node system consisting of one source and one relay node transmitting
information to a common destination. The source and the relay have external
traffic and in addition, the relay is equipped with a flow controller to
regulate the incoming traffic from the source node. The cooperation is
performed at the network level. A collision channel with erasures is
considered. We provide an exact characterization of the stability region of the
system and we also prove that the system with partial cooperation is always

Partner selection in indoor-to-outdoor cooperative networks: an experimental study
In this paper, we develop a partner selection protocol for enhancing the
network lifetime in cooperative wireless networks. The case-study is the
cooperative relayed transmission from fixed indoor nodes to a common outdoor
access point. A stochastic bivariate model for the spatial distribution of the
fading parameters that govern the link performance, namely the Rician K-factor
and the path-loss, is proposed and validated by means of real channel
measurements. The partner selection protocol is based on the real-time
estimation of a function of these fading parameters, i.e., the coding gain. To
reduce the complexity of the link quality assessment, a Bayesian approach is
proposed that uses the site-specific bivariate model as a-priori information
for the coding gain estimation. This link quality estimator allows network
lifetime gains almost as if all K-factor values were known. Furthermore, it
suits IEEE 802.15.4 compliant networks as it efficiently exploits the
information acquired from the receiver signal strength indicator. Extensive
numerical results highlight the trade-off between complexity, robustness to
model mismatches and network lifetime performance. We show for instance that
infrequent updates of the site-specific model through K-factor estimation over
a subset of links are sufficient to at least double the network lifetime with

Markov Decision Processes with Applications in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of autonomous and resource-limited
devices. The devices cooperate to monitor one or more physical phenomena within
an area of interest. WSNs operate as stochastic systems because of randomness
in the monitored environments. For long service time and low maintenance cost,
WSNs require adaptive and robust methods to address data exchange, topology
formulation, resource and power optimization, sensing coverage and object
detection, and security challenges. In these problems, sensor nodes are to make
optimized decisions from a set of accessible strategies to achieve design
goals. This survey reviews numerous applications of the Markov decision process
(MDP) framework, a powerful decision-making tool to develop adaptive algorithms
and protocols for WSNs. Furthermore, various solution methods are discussed and
compared to serve as a guide for using MDPs in WSNs
Full-Duplex Cloud Radio Access Network: Stochastic Design and Analysis
Full-duplex (FD) has emerged as a disruptive communications paradigm for
enhancing the achievable spectral efficiency (SE), thanks to the recent major
breakthroughs in self-interference (SI) mitigation. The FD versus half-duplex
(HD) SE gain, in cellular networks, is however largely limited by the
mutual-interference (MI) between the downlink (DL) and the uplink (UL). A
potential remedy for tackling the MI bottleneck is through cooperative
communications. This paper provides a stochastic design and analysis of FD
enabled cloud radio access network (C-RAN) under the Poisson point process
(PPP)-based abstraction model of multi-antenna radio units (RUs) and user
equipments (UEs). We consider different disjoint and user-centric approaches
towards the formation of finite clusters in the C-RAN. Contrary to most
existing studies, we explicitly take into consideration non-isotropic fading
channel conditions and finite-capacity fronthaul links. Accordingly,
upper-bound expressions for the C-RAN DL and UL SEs, involving the statistics
of all intended and interfering signals, are derived. The performance of the FD
C-RAN is investigated through the proposed theoretical framework and
Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations. The results indicate that significant FD versus
HD C-RAN SE gains can be achieved, particularly in the presence of
sufficient-capacity fronthaul links and advanced interference cancellation
capabilities
