The Application of Minicomputers to Problems of Information Retrieval

    Get PDF
Although minicomputers can be used in many types of information retrieval facilities, this paper deals primarily with bibliographic reference re- trieval systems. There are two main reasons why it is attractive to consider using a minicomputer for on-line applications: (1) the relatively low cost and (2) the hardware and software provided.published or submitted for publicatio

Digital document imaging systems: An overview and guide

    Get PDF
This is an aid to NASA managers in planning the selection of a Digital Document Imaging System (DDIS) as a possible solution for document information processing and storage. Intended to serve as a manager's guide, this document contains basic information on digital imaging systems, technology, equipment standards, issues of interoperability and interconnectivity, and issues related to selecting appropriate imaging equipment based upon well defined needs

Application of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (Atm) technology to Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (Pacs): A survey

Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (R-ISDN) provides a range of narrowband and broad-band services for voice, video, and multimedia. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) has been selected by the standards bodies as the transfer mode for implementing B-ISDN; The ability to digitize images has lead to the prospect of reducing the physical space requirements, material costs, and manual labor of traditional film handling tasks in hospitals. The system which handles the acquisition, storage, and transmission of medical images is called a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). The transmission system will directly impact the speed of image transfer. Today the most common transmission means used by acquisition and display station products is Ethernet. However, when considering network media, it is important to consider what the long term needs will be. Although ATM is a new standard, it is showing signs of becoming the next logical step to meet the needs of high speed networks; This thesis is a survey on ATM, and PACS. All the concepts involved in developing a PACS are presented in an orderly manner. It presents the recent developments in ATM, its applicability to PACS and the issues to be resolved for realising an ATM-based complete PACS. This work will be useful in providing the latest information, for any future research on ATM-based networks, and PACS

Cooperative Library Resource Sharing Among Universities Supporting Graduate Study in Alabama

A study of academic libraries in the State of Alabama by the Council of Librarians, an advisory Council to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, was completed in April 1982. The impetus for the study came from the Council of Graduate Deans, also an advisory Council to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, and was presented to that body at their Spring meeting, April 21 to 23, 1982. Cooperative Library Resource Sharing Among Universities Supporting Graduate Study in Alabama is a qualitative statement about one component of our postsecondary institutional resources and is based on the assumption that academic libraries represent a valid barometer of institutional excellence in programmatic development and research. This statewide study consists of five independent reports developed over a period of twelve months which collectively represent a comprehensive assessment of the academic libraries of sixteen postsecondary institutions, both public and private. In addition, the reports establish the foundation for continuing and expanding cooperative network activities. Included in the study are detailed analyses of collection development as well as staff and space adequacy according to commonly accepted standards and criteria; current status and trends in bibliographic and physical access; and a profile of Alabama\u27s academic library computerization activities against the state-of-the-art in library computerization nationally. The reports also provide comparative analyses of the libraries against regional and national measures of excellence. The recommendations which emerge from the study culminate in a systematic plan for cooperative resource sharing among academic libraries supporting graduate education, a plan which, if only partially implemented, would serve to enrich substantially not only the existing system but other statewide multi-type library networks as well. The completion of the study is testimony to the climate and level of cooperative activity which currently exists among the State\u27s academic librarians and reinforces the status of the Council of Librarians as a mechanism of proven capability for future efforts.https://digitalcommons.jsu.edu/lib_ac_alhist/1014/thumbnail.jp
