    User-centered design of a dynamic-autonomy remote interaction concept for manipulation-capable robots to assist elderly people in the home

    In this article, we describe the development of a human-robot interaction concept for service robots to assist elderly people in the home with physical tasks. Our approach is based on the insight that robots are not yet able to handle all tasks autonomously with sufficient reliability in the complex and heterogeneous environments of private homes. We therefore employ remote human operators to assist on tasks a robot cannot handle completely autonomously. Our development methodology was user-centric and iterative, with six user studies carried out at various stages involving a total of 241 participants. The concept is under implementation on the Care-O-bot 3 robotic platform. The main contributions of this article are (1) the results of a survey in form of a ranking of the demands of elderly people and informal caregivers for a range of 25 robot services, (2) the results of an ethnography investigating the suitability of emergency teleassistance and telemedical centers for incorporating robotic teleassistance, and (3) a user-validated human-robot interaction concept with three user roles and corresponding three user interfaces designed as a solution to the problem of engineering reliable service robots for home environments

    CHARMIE: a collaborative healthcare and home service and assistant robot for elderly care

    The global population is ageing at an unprecedented rate. With changes in life expectancy across the world, three major issues arise: an increasing proportion of senior citizens; cognitive and physical problems progressively affecting the elderly; and a growing number of single-person households. The available data proves the ever-increasing necessity for efficient elderly care solutions such as healthcare service and assistive robots. Additionally, such robotic solutions provide safe healthcare assistance in public health emergencies such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19). CHARMIE is an anthropomorphic collaborative healthcare and domestic assistant robot capable of performing generic service tasks in non-standardised healthcare and domestic environment settings. The combination of its hardware and software solutions demonstrates map building and self-localisation, safe navigation through dynamic obstacle detection and avoidance, different human-robot interaction systems, speech and hearing, pose/gesture estimation and household object manipulation. Moreover, CHARMIE performs end-to-end chores in nursing homes, domestic houses, and healthcare facilities. Some examples of these chores are to help users transport items, fall detection, tidying up rooms, user following, and set up a table. The robot can perform a wide range of chores, either independently or collaboratively.     Dynamic Scene Reconstruction and Understanding

    Traditional approaches to 3D reconstruction have achieved remarkable progress in static scene acquisition. The acquired data serves as priors or benchmarks for many vision and graphics tasks, such as object detection and robotic navigation. Thus, obtaining interpretable and editable representations from a raw monocular RGB-D video sequence is an outstanding goal in scene understanding. However, acquiring an interpretable representation becomes significantly more challenging when a scene contains dynamic activities; for example, a moving camera, rigid object movement, and non-rigid motions. These dynamic scene elements introduce a scene factorization problem, i.e., dividing a scene into elements and jointly estimating elements’ motion and geometry. Moreover, the monocular setting brings in the problems of tracking and fusing partially occluded objects as they are scanned from one viewpoint at a time. This thesis explores several ideas for acquiring an interpretable model in dynamic environments. Firstly, we utilize synthetic assets such as floor plans and object meshes to generate dynamic data for training and evaluation. Then, we explore the idea of learning geometry priors with an instance segmentation module, which predicts the location and grouping of indoor objects. We use the learned geometry priors to infer the occluded object geometry for tracking and reconstruction. While instance segmentation modules usually have a generalization issue, i.e., struggling to handle unknown objects, we observed that the empty space information in the background geometry is more reliable for detecting moving objects. Thus, we proposed a segmentation-by-reconstruction strategy for acquiring rigidly-moving objects and backgrounds. Finally, we present a novel neural representation to learn a factorized scene representation, reconstructing every dynamic element. The proposed model supports both rigid and non-rigid motions without pre-trained templates. We demonstrate that our systems and representation improve the reconstruction quality on synthetic test sets and real-world scans

    Bidirectional Propagation for Cross-Modal 3D Object Detection

    Recent works have revealed the superiority of feature-level fusion for cross-modal 3D object detection, where fine-grained feature propagation from 2D image pixels to 3D LiDAR points has been widely adopted for performance improvement. Still, the potential of heterogeneous feature propagation between 2D and 3D domains has not been fully explored. In this paper, in contrast to existing pixel-to-point feature propagation, we investigate an opposite point-to-pixel direction, allowing point-wise features to flow inversely into the 2D image branch. Thus, when jointly optimizing the 2D and 3D streams, the gradients back-propagated from the 2D image branch can boost the representation ability of the 3D backbone network working on LiDAR point clouds. Then, combining pixel-to-point and point-to-pixel information flow mechanisms, we construct an bidirectional feature propagation framework, dubbed BiProDet. In addition to the architectural design, we also propose normalized local coordinates map estimation, a new 2D auxiliary task for the training of the 2D image branch, which facilitates learning local spatial-aware features from the image modality and implicitly enhances the overall 3D detection performance. Extensive experiments and ablation studies validate the effectiveness of our method. Notably, we rank 1st\mathbf{1^{\mathrm{st}}} on the highly competitive KITTI benchmark on the cyclist class by the time of submission.     Don't Forget to Buy Milk: Contextually Aware Grocery Reminder Household Robot

    Assistive robots operating in household environments would require items to be available in the house to perform assistive tasks. However, when these items run out, the assistive robot must remind its user to buy the missing items. In this paper, we present a computational architecture that can allow a robot to learn personalized contextual knowledge of a household through interactions with its user. The architecture can then use the learned knowledge to make predictions about missing items from the household over a long period of time. The architecture integrates state-of-the-art perceptual learning algorithms, cognitive models of memory encoding and learning, a reasoning module for predicting missing items from the household, and a graphical user interface (GUI) to interact with the user. The architecture is integrated with the Fetch mobile manipulator robot and validated in a large indoor environment with multiple contexts and objects. Our experimental results show that the robot can adapt to an environment by learning contextual knowledge through interactions with its user. The robot can also use the learned knowledge to correctly predict missing items over multiple weeks and it is robust against sensory and perceptual errors.Comment: Accepted at IEEE ICDL 202
