Simultaneous Transmission and Reception: Algorithm, Design and System Level Performance
Full Duplex or Simultaneous transmission and reception (STR) in the same
frequency at the same time can potentially double the physical layer capacity.
However, high power transmit signal will appear at receive chain as echoes with
powers much higher than the desired received signal. Therefore, in order to
achieve the potential gain, it is imperative to cancel these echoes. As these
high power echoes can saturate low noise amplifier (LNA) and also digital
domain echo cancellation requires unrealistically high resolution
analog-to-digital converter (ADC), the echoes should be cancelled or suppressed
sufficiently before LNA. In this paper we present a closed-loop echo
cancellation technique which can be implemented purely in analogue domain. The
advantages of our method are multiple-fold: it is robust to phase noise, does
not require additional set of antennas, can be applied to wideband signals and
the performance is irrelevant to radio frequency (RF) impairments in transmit
chain. Next, we study a few protocols for STR systems in carrier sense multiple
access (CSMA) network and investigate MAC level throughput with realistic
assumptions in both single cell and multiple cells. We show that STR can reduce
hidden node problem in CSMA network and produce gains of up to 279% in maximum
throughput in such networks. Finally, we investigate the application of STR in
cellular systems and study two new unique interferences introduced to the
system due to STR, namely BS-BS interference and UE-UE interference. We show
that these two new interferences will hugely degrade system performance if not
treated appropriately. We propose novel methods to reduce both interferences

Evaluation of Interference-Cancellation Based MAC Protocols for Vehicular Communications
Vehicular communications form an important part of future intelligent transport systems. Wireless connectivity between vehicles can enhance safety in vehicular networks and enable new services such as adaptive traffic control, collision detection and avoidance. As several new algorithms are being developed for enhancing vehicle to vehicle wireless connectivity, it is important to validate the performance of these algorithms using reasonably accurate wireless channel models. Specifically, some recent developments in the medium access control (MAC) layer algorithms appear to have the potential to improve the performance of vehicle to vehicle communications; however, these algorithms have not been validated with realistic channel models encountered in vehicular communications.
The aforementioned issues are addressed in this thesis and correspondingly, there are two main contributions - (i) A complete IEEE 802.11p based transceiver model has been simulated in MATLAB and its performance & reliability are tested using existing empirically-developed wireless channel models. (ii) A new MAC layer algorithm based on slotted ALOHA with successive interference cancellation(SIC) has been evaluated and tested by taking into consideration the performance of underlying physical layer. The performance of slotted ALOHA-SIC and the already existing carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) scheme with respect to channel access delay and average packet loss ratio is also studied
Survey of Spectrum Sharing for Inter-Technology Coexistence
Increasing capacity demands in emerging wireless technologies are expected to
be met by network densification and spectrum bands open to multiple
technologies. These will, in turn, increase the level of interference and also
result in more complex inter-technology interactions, which will need to be
managed through spectrum sharing mechanisms. Consequently, novel spectrum
sharing mechanisms should be designed to allow spectrum access for multiple
technologies, while efficiently utilizing the spectrum resources overall.
Importantly, it is not trivial to design such efficient mechanisms, not only
due to technical aspects, but also due to regulatory and business model
constraints. In this survey we address spectrum sharing mechanisms for wireless
inter-technology coexistence by means of a technology circle that incorporates
in a unified, system-level view the technical and non-technical aspects. We
thus systematically explore the spectrum sharing design space consisting of
parameters at different layers. Using this framework, we present a literature
review on inter-technology coexistence with a focus on wireless technologies
with equal spectrum access rights, i.e. (i) primary/primary, (ii)
secondary/secondary, and (iii) technologies operating in a spectrum commons.
Moreover, we reflect on our literature review to identify possible spectrum
sharing design solutions and performance evaluation approaches useful for
future coexistence cases. Finally, we discuss spectrum sharing design
challenges and suggest future research directions

The resulting high fidelity simulations enable performance optimizations across multiple layers, and are used in the second part of this thesis to evaluate the impact of fast-fading channel characteristics on Carrier-Sense Multiple Access, and to quantify the benefit of successive interference cancellation

The role of SIC on the design of next generation multiple access
The interplay of physical layer enhancements and classic random access protocols is the objective of this paper. Successive interference cancellation (SIC) is among the major enhancements of the physical layer. Considering the classic representatives of random access protocols, Slotted ALOHA and Channel Sensing Multiple Access (CSMA), we show that two regimes can be identified as a function of the communication link spectral efficiency. In case of high levels of spectral efficiency, multi-packet reception enabled by SIC is of limited benefit. Sum-rate performance is dominated by the effectiveness of the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol. On the contrary, for low spectral efficiency levels, sum-rate performance is essentially dependent on physical layer SIC capability, while the MAC protocol has a marginal impact. Limitations due to transmission power dynamic range are shown to induce unfairness among nodes. However, the unfairness issue fades away when the system is driven to work around the sum-rate peak achieved for low spectral efficiency. This can also be confirmed by looking at Age of Information (AoI) metric. The major finding of this work is that SIC can boost performance, while still maintaining a fair sharing of the communication channel among nodes. In this regime, the MAC protocol appears to play a marginal role, while multi-packet reception endowed by SIC is prominent to provide high sum-rate, low energy consumption, and low AoI
