Backwards is the way forward: feedback in the cortical hierarchy predicts the expected future
Clark offers a powerful description of the brain as a prediction machine, which offers progress on two distinct levels. First, on an abstract conceptual level, it provides a unifying framework for perception, action, and cognition (including subdivisions such as attention, expectation, and imagination). Second, hierarchical prediction offers progress on a concrete descriptive level for testing and constraining conceptual elements and mechanisms of predictive coding models (estimation of predictions, prediction errors, and internal models)
Who wrote this scientific text?
The IEEE bibliographic database contains a number of proven duplications with indication of the original paper(s) copied. This corpus is used to test a method for the detection of hidden intertextuality (commonly named "plagiarism"). The intertextual distance, combined with the sliding window and with various classification techniques, identifies these duplications with a very low risk of error. These experiments also show that several factors blur the identity of the scientific author, including variable group authorship and the high levels of intertextuality accepted, and sometimes desired, in scientific papers on the same topic
Adapting models of visual aesthetics for personalized content creation
This paper introduces a search-based approach to
personalized content generation with respect to visual aesthetics.
The approach is based on a two-step adaptation procedure
where (1) the evaluation function that characterizes the content
is adjusted to match the visual aesthetics of users and (2) the
content itself is optimized based on the personalized evaluation
function. To test the efficacy of the approach we design fitness
functions based on universal properties of visual perception,
inspired by psychological and neurobiological research. Using
these visual properties we generate aesthetically pleasing 2D
game spaceships via neuroevolutionary constrained optimization
and evaluate the impact of the designed visual properties on the
generated spaceships. The offline generated spaceships are used
as the initial population of an interactive evolution experiment in
which players are asked to choose spaceships according to their
visual taste: the impact of the various visual properties is adjusted
based on player preferences and new content is generated online
based on the updated computational model of visual aesthetics
of the player. Results are presented which show the potential of
the approach in generating content which is based on subjective
criteria of visual aesthetics. Thanks to all the participants of the interactive evolution
experiement. The research was supported, in part, by the

Future directions for scientific advice in Europe
Across Europe, scientific evidence and advice is in great demand, to inform policies and decision making on issues such as climate change, new technologies and environmental regulation. But the diversity of political cultures and attitudes to expertise in different European countries can make the task of designing EU-wide advisory institutions and processes both sensitive and complex.
In January 2015, President Juncker asked Commissioner Moedas to report on options for improving scientific advice within the European Commission. At a time when these issues are higher than usual on the political agenda, it is important that the case for scientific advice and evidence-informed policy is articulated and analysed afresh.
To support these efforts, this collection brings together agenda-setting essays by policymakers, practitioners, scientists and scholars from across Europe. Authors include Anne Glover, Ulrike Felt, Robert Madelin, Andy Stirling, VladimĂr Ć ucha and Jos van der Meer. Their contributions outline various challenges but also constructive ways forward for scientific advice in Europe
