    SonicSpray: a technique to reconfigure permeable mid-air displays

    Permeable, mid-air displays, such as those using fog or water mist are limited by our ability to shape and control the aerosol and deal with two major issues: (1) the size and complexity of the system, and (2) the creation of laminar flow, to retain display quality. Here we present SonicSpray, a technique using ultrasonic Bessel beams to create reconfigurable mid-air displays. We build a prototype from low-cost, off-the-shelf parts. We explore the potential and limitations of SonicSpray to create and redirect laminar flows of fog. We demonstrate a working prototype that precisely controls laminar aerosols through only 6x6 ultrasound transducers array. We describe the implementation steps to build the device, verify the control and projection algorithm for the display, and evaluate its performance. We finally report our exploration of several useful applications, in learning, entertainment and arts

    Efficient Methods for Computational Light Transport

    En esta tesis presentamos contribuciones sobre distintos retos computacionales relacionados con transporte de luz. Los algoritmos que utilizan información sobre el transporte de luz están presentes en muchas aplicaciones de hoy en día, desde la generación de efectos visuales, a la detección de objetos en tiempo real. La luz es una valiosa fuente de información que nos permite entender y representar nuestro entorno, pero obtener y procesar esta información presenta muchos desafíos debido a la complejidad de las interacciones entre la luz y la materia. Esta tesis aporta contribuciones en este tema desde dos puntos de vista diferentes: algoritmos en estado estacionario, en los que se asume que la velocidad de la luz es infinita; y algoritmos en estado transitorio, que tratan la luz no solo en el dominio espacial, sino también en el temporal. Nuestras contribuciones en algoritmos estacionarios abordan problemas tanto en renderizado offline como en tiempo real. Nos enfocamos en la reducción de varianza para métodos offline,proponiendo un nuevo método para renderizado eficiente de medios participativos. En renderizado en tiempo real, abordamos las limitacionesde consumo de batería en dispositivos móviles proponiendo un sistema de renderizado que incrementa la eficiencia energética en aplicaciones gráficas en tiempo real. En el transporte de luz transitorio, formalizamos la simulación de este tipo transporte en este nuevo dominio, y presentamos nuevos algoritmos y métodos para muestreo eficiente para render transitorio. Finalmente, demostramos la utilidad de generar datos en este dominio, presentando un nuevo método para corregir interferencia multi-caminos en camaras Timeof- Flight, un problema patológico en el procesamiento de imágenes transitorias.n this thesis we present contributions to different challenges of computational light transport. Light transport algorithms are present in many modern applications, from image generation for visual effects to real-time object detection. Light is a rich source of information that allows us to understand and represent our surroundings, but obtaining and processing this information presents many challenges due to its complex interactions with matter. This thesis provides advances in this subject from two different perspectives: steady-state algorithms, where the speed of light is assumed infinite, and transient-state algorithms, which deal with light as it travels not only through space but also time. Our steady-state contributions address problems in both offline and real-time rendering. We target variance reduction in offline rendering by proposing a new efficient method for participating media rendering. In real-time rendering, we target energy constraints of mobile devices by proposing a power-efficient rendering framework for real-time graphics applications. In transient-state we first formalize light transport simulation under this domain, and present new efficient sampling methods and algorithms for transient rendering. We finally demonstrate the potential of simulated data to correct multipath interference in Time-of-Flight cameras, one of the pathological problems in transient imaging.<br /

    Multi-Object Tracking System based on LiDAR and RADAR for Intelligent Vehicles applications

    El presente Trabajo Fin de Grado tiene como objetivo el desarrollo de un Sistema de Detección y Multi-Object Tracking 3D basado en la fusión sensorial de LiDAR y RADAR para aplicaciones de conducción autónoma basándose en algoritmos tradicionales de Machine Learning. La implementación realizada está basada en Python, ROS y cumple requerimientos de tiempo real. En la etapa de detección de objetos se utiliza el algoritmo de segmentación del plano RANSAC, para una posterior extracción de Bounding Boxes mediante DBSCAN. Una Late Sensor Fusion mediante Intersection over Union 3D y un sistema de tracking BEV-SORT completan la arquitectura propuesta.This Final Degree Project aims to develop a 3D Multi-Object Tracking and Detection System based on the Sensor Fusion of LiDAR and RADAR for autonomous driving applications based on traditional Machine Learning algorithms. The implementation is based on Python, ROS and complies with real-time requirements. In the Object Detection stage, the RANSAC plane segmentation algorithm is used, for a subsequent extraction of Bounding Boxes using DBSCAN.     Quantifying Membrane Topology at the Nanoscale

    Changes in the shape of cellular membranes are linked with viral replication, Alzheimer\u27s, heart disease and an abundance of other maladies. Some membranous organelles, such as the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi, are only 50 nm in diameter. As such, membrane shape changes are conventionally studied with electron microscopy (EM), which preserves cellular ultrastructure and achieves a resolution of 2 nm or better. However, immunolabeling in EM is challenging, and often destroys the cell, making it difficult to study interactions between membranes and other proteins. Additionally, cells must be fixed in EM imaging, making it impossible to study mechanisms of disease. To address these problems, this thesis advances nanoscale imaging and analysis of membrane shape changes and their associated proteins using super-resolution single-molecule localization microscopy. This thesis is divided into three parts. In the first, a novel correlative orientation-independent differential interference contrast (OI-DIC) and single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) instrument is designed to address challenges with live-cell imaging of membrane nanostructure. SMLM super-resolution fluorescence techniques image with ~ 20 nm resolution, and are compatible with live-cell imaging. However, due to SMLM\u27s slow imaging speeds, most cell movement is under-sampled. OI-DIC images fast, is gentle enough to be used with living cells and can image cellular structure without labelling, but is diffraction-limited. Combining SMLM with OI-DIC allows for imaging of cellular context that can supplement sparse super-resolution data in real time. The second part of the thesis describes an open-source software package for visualizing and analyzing SMLM data. SMLM imaging yields localization point clouds, which requires non-standard visualization and analysis techniques. Existing techniques are described, and necessary new ones are implemented. These tools are designed to interpret data collected from the OI-DIC/SMLM microscope, as well as from other optical setups. Finally, a tool for extracting membrane structure from SMLM point clouds is described. SMLM data is often noisy, containing multiple localizations per fluorophore and many non-specific localizations. SMLM\u27s resolution reveals labelling discontinuities, which exacerbate sparsity of localizations. It is non-trivial to reconstruct the continuous shape of a membrane from a discrete set of points, and even more difficult in the presence of the noise profile characteristic of most SMLM point clouds. To address this, a surface reconstruction algorithm for extracting continuous surfaces from SMLM data is implemented.     Perceived Depth Control in Stereoscopic Cinematography

    Despite the recent explosion of interest in the stereoscopic 3D (S3D) technology, the ultimate prevailing of the S3D medium is still significantly hindered by adverse effects regarding the S3D viewing discomfort. This thesis attempts to improve the S3D viewing experience by investigating perceived depth control methods in stereoscopic cinematography on desktop 3D displays. The main contributions of this work are: (1) A new method was developed to carry out human factors studies on identifying the practical limits of the 3D Comfort Zone on a given 3D display. Our results suggest that it is necessary for cinematographers to identify the specific limits of 3D Comfort Zone on the target 3D display as different 3D systems have different ranges for the 3D Comfort Zone. (2) A new dynamic depth mapping approach was proposed to improve the depth perception in stereoscopic cinematography. The results of a human-based experiment confirmed its advantages in controlling the perceived depth in viewing 3D motion pictures over the existing depth mapping methods. (3) The practicability of employing the Depth of Field (DoF) blur technique in S3D was also investigated. Our results indicate that applying the DoF blur simulation on stereoscopic content may not improve the S3D viewing experience without the real time information about what the viewer is looking at. Finally, a basic guideline for stereoscopic cinematography was introduced to summarise the new findings of this thesis alongside several well-known key factors in 3D cinematography. It is our assumption that this guideline will be of particular interest not only to 3D filmmaking but also to 3D gaming, sports broadcasting, and TV production

    Optimization techniques for computationally expensive rendering algorithms

    Realistic rendering in computer graphics simulates the interactions of light and surfaces. While many accurate models for surface reflection and lighting, including solid surfaces and participating media have been described; most of them rely on intensive computation. Common practices such as adding constraints and assumptions can increase performance. However, they may compromise the quality of the resulting images or the variety of phenomena that can be accurately represented. In this thesis, we will focus on rendering methods that require high amounts of computational resources. Our intention is to consider several conceptually different approaches capable of reducing these requirements with only limited implications in the quality of the results. The first part of this work will study rendering of time-­¿varying participating media. Examples of this type of matter are smoke, optically thick gases and any material that, unlike the vacuum, scatters and absorbs the light that travels through it. We will focus on a subset of algorithms that approximate realistic illumination using images of real world scenes. Starting from the traditional ray marching algorithm, we will suggest and implement different optimizations that will allow performing the computation at interactive frame rates. This thesis will also analyze two different aspects of the generation of anti-­¿aliased images. One targeted to the rendering of screen-­¿space anti-­¿aliased images and the reduction of the artifacts generated in rasterized lines and edges. We expect to describe an implementation that, working as a post process, it is efficient enough to be added to existing rendering pipelines with reduced performance impact. A third method will take advantage of the limitations of the human visual system (HVS) to reduce the resources required to render temporally antialiased images. While film and digital cameras naturally produce motion blur, rendering pipelines need to explicitly simulate it. This process is known to be one of the most important burdens for every rendering pipeline. Motivated by this, we plan to run a series of psychophysical experiments targeted at identifying groups of motion-­¿blurred images that are perceptually equivalent. A possible outcome is the proposal of criteria that may lead to reductions of the rendering budgets

    [ES] La introducción de soluciones tecnológicas en la agricultura permite reducir el uso de recursos y aumentar la producción de los cultivos. Además, la calidad del agua de regadío se puede monitorizar para asegurar la seguridad de los productos para el consumo humano. Sin embargo, la localización remota de la mayoría de los campos presenta un problema para proveer de cobertura inalámbrica a los nodos sensores y actuadores desplegados en los campos y los canales de agua para regadío. El trabajo presentado en esta tesis aborda el problema de habilitar la comunicación inalámbrica entre los dispositivos electrónicos desplegados para la monitorización de la calidad del agua y el campo a través de un protocolo de comunicación y arquitectura heterogéneos. La primera parte de esta tesis introduce los sistemas de agricultura de precisión (PA) y la importancia de la monitorización de la calidad del agua y el campo. Asimismo, las tecnologías que permiten la comunicación inalámbrica en sistemas PA y el uso de soluciones alternativas como el internet de las cosas bajo tierra (IoUT) y los vehículos aéreos no tripulados (UAV) se introducen también. Después, se realiza un análisis en profundidad del estado del arte respecto a los sensores para la monitorización del agua, el campo y las condiciones meteorológicas, así como sobre las tecnologías inalámbricas más empleadas en PA. Además, las tendencias actuales y los desafíos de los sistemas de internet de las cosas (IoT) para regadío, incluyendo las soluciones alternativas introducidas anteriormente, han sido abordados en detalle. A continuación, se presenta la arquitectura propuesta para el sistema, la cual incluye las áreas de interés para las actividades monitorización que incluye las áreas de los canales y el campo. A su vez, la descripción y los algoritmos de operación de los nodos sensores contemplados para cada área son proporcionados. El siguiente capítulo detalla el protocolo de comunicación heterogéneo propuesto, incluyendo los mensajes y alertas del sistema. Adicionalmente, se presenta una nueva topología de árbol para redes híbridas LoRa/WiFi multisalto. Las funcionalidades específicas adicionales concebidas para la arquitectura propuesta están descritas en el siguiente capítulo. Éstas incluyen algoritmos de agregación de datos para la topología propuesta, un esquema de las amenazas de seguridad para los sistemas PA, algoritmos de ahorro de energía y tolerancia a fallos, comunicación bajo tierra para IoUT y el uso de drones para adquisición de datos. Después, los resultados de las simulaciones para las soluciones propuestas anteriormente son presentados. Finalmente, se tratan las pruebas realizadas en entornos reales para el protocolo heterogéneo presentado, las diferentes estrategias de despliegue de los nodos empleados, el consumo energético y la función de cuantificación de fruta. No obstant això, la localització remota de la majoria dels camps presenta un problema per a proveir de cobertura sense fils als nodes sensors i actuadors desplegats als camps i els canals d'aigua per a regadiu. El treball presentat en aquesta tesi tracta el problema d'habilitar la comunicació sense fils entre els dispositius electrònics desplegats per a la monitorització de la qualitat de l'aigua i el camp a través d'un protocol de comunicació i arquitectura heterogenis. La primera part d'aquesta tesi introdueix els sistemes d'agricultura de precisió (PA) i la importància de la monitorització de la qualitat de l'aigua i el camp. Així mateix, també s'introdueixen les tecnologies que permeten la comunicació sense fils en sistemes PA i l'ús de solucions alternatives com l'Internet de les coses sota terra (IoUT) i els vehicles aeris no tripulats (UAV). Després, es realitza una anàlisi en profunditat de l'estat de l'art respecte als sensors per a la monitorització de l'aigua, el camp i les condicions meteorològiques, així com sobre les tecnologies sense fils més emprades en PA. S'aborden les tendències actuals i els reptes dels sistemes d'internet de les coses (IoT) per a regadiu, incloent les solucions alternatives introduïdes anteriorment. A continuació, es presenta l'arquitectura proposada per al sistema, on s'inclouen les àrees d'interès per a les activitats monitorització en els canals i el camp. Finalment, es proporciona la descripció i els algoritmes d'operació dels nodes sensors contemplats per a cada àrea. El següent capítol detalla el protocol de comunicació heterogeni proposat, així como el disseny del missatges i alertes que el sistema proposa. A més, es presenta una nova topologia d'arbre per a xarxes híbrides Lora/WiFi multi-salt. Les funcionalitats específiques addicionals concebudes per l'arquitectura proposada estan descrites en el següent capítol. Aquestes inclouen algoritmes d'agregació de dades per a la topologia proposta, un esquema de les alertes de seguretat per als sistemes PA, algoritmes d'estalvi d'energia i tolerància a fallades, comunicació per a IoUT i l'ús de drons per a adquisició de dades. Després, es presenten els resultats de les simulacions per a les solucions proposades. Finalment, es duen a terme les proves en entorns reals per al protocol heterogeni dissenyat. A més s'expliquen les diferents estratègies de desplegament dels nodes empleats, el consum energètic, així com, la funció de quantificació de fruita. Els resultats d'aquetes proves demostren la validesa de l'arquitectura i protocol de comunicació heterogenis propost en aquesta tesi.[EN] The introduction of technological solutions in agriculture allows reducing the use of resources and increasing the production of the crops. Furthermore, the quality of the water for irrigation can be monitored to ensure the safety of the produce for human consumption. However, the remote location of most fields presents a problem for providing wireless coverage to the sensing nodes and actuators deployed on the fields and the irrigation water canals. The work presented in this thesis addresses the problem of enabling wireless communication among the electronic devices deployed for water quality and field monitoring through a heterogeneous communication protocol and architecture. The first part of the dissertation introduces Precision Agriculture (PA) systems and the importance of water quality and field monitoring. In addition, the technologies that enable wireless communication in PA systems and the use of alternative solutions such as Internet of Underground Things (IoUT) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) are introduced as well. Then, an in-depth analysis on the state of the art regarding the sensors for water, field and meteorology monitoring and the most utilized wireless technologies in PA is performed. Furthermore, the current trends and challenges for Internet of Things (IoT) irrigation systems, including the alternate solutions previously introduced, have been discussed in detail. Then, the architecture for the proposed system is presented, which includes the areas of interest for the monitoring activities comprised of the canal and field areas. Moreover, the description and operation algorithms of the sensor nodes contemplated for each area is provided. The next chapter details the proposed heterogeneous communication protocol including the messages and alerts of the system. Additionally, a new tree topology for hybrid LoRa/WiFi multi-hop networks is presented. The specific additional functionalities intended for the proposed architecture are described in the following chapter. It includes data aggregation algorithms for the proposed topology, an overview on the security threats of PA systems, energy-saving and fault-tolerance algorithms, underground communication for IoUT, and the use of drones for data acquisition. Then, the simulation results for the solutions previously proposed are presented. Finally, the tests performed in real environments for the presented heterogeneous protocol, the different deployment strategies for the utilized nodes, the energy consumption, and a functionality for fruit quantification are discussed. These tests demonstrate the validity of the proposed heterogeneous architecture and communication protocol.García García, L. (2021).
