    Some aspects of traffic control and performance evaluation of ATM networks

    The emerging high-speed Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks are expected to integrate through statistical multiplexing large numbers of traffic sources having a broad range of statistical characteristics and different Quality of Service (QOS) requirements. To achieve high utilisation of network resources while maintaining the QOS, efficient traffic management strategies have to be developed. This thesis considers the problem of traffic control for ATM networks. The thesis studies the application of neural networks to various ATM traffic control issues such as feedback congestion control, traffic characterization, bandwidth estimation, and Call Admission Control (CAC). A novel adaptive congestion control approach based on a neural network that uses reinforcement learning is developed. It is shown that the neural controller is very effective in providing general QOS control. A Finite Impulse Response (FIR) neural network is proposed to adaptively predict the traffic arrival process by learning the relationship between the past and future traffic variations. On the basis of this prediction, a feedback flow control scheme at input access nodes of the network is presented. Simulation results demonstrate significant performance improvement over conventional control mechanisms. In addition, an accurate yet computationally efficient approach to effective bandwidth estimation for multiplexed connections is investigated. In this method, a feed forward neural network is employed to model the nonlinear relationship between the effective bandwidth and the traffic situations and a QOS measure. Applications of this approach to admission control, bandwidth allocation and dynamic routing are also discussed. A detailed investigation has indicated that CAC schemes based on effective bandwidth approximation can be very conservative and prevent optimal use of network resources. A modified effective bandwidth CAC approach is therefore proposed to overcome the drawback of conventional methods. Considering statistical multiplexing between traffic sources, we directly calculate the effective bandwidth of the aggregate traffic which is modelled by a two-state Markov modulated Poisson process via matching four important statistics. We use the theory of large deviations to provide a unified description of effective bandwidths for various traffic sources and the associated ATM multiplexer queueing performance approximations, illustrating their strengths and limitations. In addition, a more accurate estimation method for ATM QOS parameters based on the Bahadur-Rao theorem is proposed, which is a refinement of the original effective bandwidth approximation and can lead to higher link utilisation

    Design of traffic shaper / scheduler for packet switches and DiffServ networks : algorithms and architectures

    The convergence of communications, information, commerce and computing are creating a significant demand and opportunity for multimedia and multi-class communication services. In such environments, controlling the network behavior and guaranteeing the user\u27s quality of service is required. A flexible hierarchical sorting architecture which can function either as a traffic shaper or a scheduler according to the requirement of the traffic load is presented to meet the requirement. The core structure can be implemented as a hierarchical traffic shaper which can support a large number of connections with a wide variety of rates and burstiness without the loss of the granularity in cells\u27 conforming departure time. The hierarchical traffic shaper can implement the exact sorting scheme with a substantial reduced memory size by using two stages of timing queues, and with substantial reduction in complexity, without introducing any sorting inaccuracy. By setting a suitable threshold to the length of the departure queue and using a lookahead algorithm, the core structure can be converted to a hierarchical rateadaptive scheduler. Based on the traffic load, it can work as an exact sorting traffic shaper or a Generic Cell Rate Algorithm (GCRA) scheduler. Such a rate-adaptive scheduler can reduce the Cell Transfer Delay and the Maximum Memory Occupancy greatly while keeping the fairness in the bandwidth assignment which is the inherent characteristic of GCRA. By introducing a best-effort queue to accommodate besteffort traffic, the hierarchical sorting architecture can be changed to a near workconserving scheduler. It assigns remaining bandwidth to the best-effort traffic so that it improves the utilization, of the outlink while it guarantees the quality of service requirements of those services which require quality of service guarantees. The inherent flexibility of the hierarchical sorting architecture combined with intelligent algorithms determines its multiple functions. Its implementation not only can manage buffer and bandwidth resources effectively, but also does not require no more than off-the-shelf hardware technology. The correlation of the extra shaping delay and the rate of the connections is revealed, and an improved fair traffic shaping algorithm, Departure Event Driven plus Completing Service Time Resorting algorithm, is presented. The proposed algorithm introduces a resorting process into Departure Event Driven Traffic Shaping Algorithm to resolve the contention of multiple cells which are all eligible for transmission in the traffic shaper. By using the resorting process based on each connection\u27s rate, better fairness and flexibility in the bandwidth assignment for connections with wide range of rates can be given. A Dual Level Leaky Bucket Traffic Shaper(DLLBTS) architecture is proposed to be implemented at the edge nodes of Differentiated Services Networks in order to facilitate the quality of service management process. The proposed architecture can guarantee not only the class-based Service Level Agreement, but also the fair resource sharing among flows belonging to the same class. A simplified DLLBTS architecture is also given, which can achieve the goals of DLLBTS while maintain a very low implementation complexity so that it can be implemented with the current VLSI technology. In summary, the shaping and scheduling algorithms in the high speed packet switches and DiffServ networks are studied, and the intelligent implementation schemes are proposed for them

    A hybrid queueing model for fast broadband networking simulation

    PhDThis research focuses on the investigation of a fast simulation method for broadband telecommunication networks, such as ATM networks and IP networks. As a result of this research, a hybrid simulation model is proposed, which combines the analytical modelling and event-driven simulation modelling to speeding up the overall simulation. The division between foreground and background traffic and the way of dealing with these different types of traffic to achieve improvement in simulation time is the major contribution reported in this thesis. Background traffic is present to ensure that proper buffering behaviour is included during the course of the simulation experiments, but only the foreground traffic of interest is simulated, unlike traditional simulation techniques. Foreground and background traffic are dealt with in a different way. To avoid the need for extra events on the event list, and the processing overhead, associated with the background traffic, the novel technique investigated in this research is to remove the background traffic completely, adjusting the service time of the queues for the background traffic to compensate (in most cases, the service time for the foreground traffic will increase). By removing the background traffic from the event-driven simulator the number of cell processing events dealt with is reduced drastically. Validation of this approach shows that, overall, the method works well, but the simulation using this method does have some differences compared with experimental results on a testbed. The reason for this is mainly because of the assumptions behind the analytical model that make the modelling tractable. Hence, the analytical model needs to be adjusted. This is done by having a neural network trained to learn the relationship between the input traffic parameters and the output difference between the proposed model and the testbed. Following this training, simulations can be run using the output of the neural network to adjust the analytical model for those particular traffic conditions. The approach is applied to cell scale and burst scale queueing to simulate an ATM switch, and it is also used to simulate an IP router. In all the applications, the method ensures a fast simulation as well as an accurate result

    Buffer management and cell switching management in wireless packet communications

    The buffer management and the cell switching (e.g., packet handoff) management using buffer management scheme are studied in Wireless Packet Communications. First, a throughput improvement method for multi-class services is proposed in Wireless Packet System. Efficient traffic management schemes should be developed to provide seamless access to the wireless network. Specially, it is proposed to regulate the buffer by the Selective- Delay Push-In (SDPI) scheme, which is applicable to scheduling delay-tolerant non-real time traffic and delay-sensitive real time traffic. Simulation results show that the performance observed by real time traffics are improved as compared to existing buffer priority scheme in term of packet loss probability. Second, the performance of the proposed SDPI scheme is analyzed in a single CBR server. The arrival process is derived from the superposition of two types of traffics, each in turn results from the superposition of homogeneous ON-OFF sources that can be approximated by means of a two-state Markov Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP). The buffer mechanism enables the ATM layer to adapt the quality of the cell transfer to the QoS requirements and to improve the utilization of network resources. This is achieved by selective-delaying and pushing-in cells according to the class they belong to. Analytical expressions for various performance parameters and numerical results are obtained. Simulation results in term of cell loss probability conform with our numerical analysis. Finally, a novel cell-switching scheme based on TDMA protocol is proposed to support QoS guarantee for the downlink. The new packets and handoff packets for each type of traffic are defined and a new cutoff prioritization scheme is devised at the buffer of the base station. A procedure to find the optimal thresholds satisfying the QoS requirements is presented. Using the ON-OFF approximation for aggregate traffic, the packet loss probability and the average packet delay are computed. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by simulation and numerical analysis in terms of packet loss probability and average packet delay

    Simulation of ATM multiplexer for bursty sources

    Asynchronous transfer mode ( ATM ) is a promising multiplexing and switching technique for implementing an integrated access as well as transport network and has been adopted by CCITT as a basis for the future broadband integrated services digital network ( BISDN ). The ATM technique allows digital communication of any type to share common transmission links and switching devices on a statistical multiplexing basis. Information is transmitted in the form of constant length cells. In an ATM network, the major parameters to cause ATM network performance deterioration are the cell loss and the cell delay at the buffer queue in the ATM multiplexer. Therefore, the performance parameters of an ATM multiplexer are specifically focused on the cell loss probability, the cell delay, and the distribution of queueing length at buffer m this study. The performance of an ATM multiplexer is studied, whose input consists of the superposition of homogeneous bursty ( ON/OFF ) sources, 1e , all the superposed sources are characterized by the bursty sources of the same parameter values. The cell loss probability and the distribution of queuing length at buffer under different offered load and buffer size conditions are evaluated. An ATM multiplexer with three priority classes is simulated using the priority assignment control method of [15]. Under the priority assignment period P and the priority assignment ratio WD in this method have been defined, the relationship between the traffic balance of classes and buffer size of each is studied. The cell loss probability and delay time of each class ( same sources and different sources between classes ) are evaluated. The results are useful to design a economic and effective ATM multiplexer

    Novel techniques in large scaleable ATM switches

    Bibliography: p. 172-178.This dissertation explores the research area of large scale ATM switches. The requirements for an ATM switch are determined by overviewing the ATM network architecture. These requirements lead to the discussion of an abstract ATM switch which illustrates the components of an ATM switch that automatically scale with increasing switch size (the Input Modules and Output Modules) and those that do not (the Connection Admission Control and Switch Management systems as well as the Cell Switch Fabric). An architecture is suggested which may result in a scalable Switch Management and Connection Admission Control function. However, the main thrust of the dissertation is confined to the cell switch fabric. The fundamental mathematical limits of ATM switches and buffer placement is presented next emphasising the desirability of output buffering. This is followed by an overview of the possible routing strategies in a multi-stage interconnection network. A variety of space division switches are then considered which leads to a discussion of the hypercube fabric, (a novel switching technique). The hypercube fabric achieves good performance with an O(N.log₂N)²) scaling. The output module, resequencing, cell scheduling and output buffering technique is presented leading to a complete description of the proposed ATM switch. Various traffic models are used to quantify the switch's performance. These include a simple exponential inter-arrival time model, a locality of reference model and a self-similar, bursty, multiplexed Variable Bit Rate (VBR) model. FIFO queueing is simple to implement in an ATNI switch, however, more responsive queueing strategies can result in an improved performance. An associative memory is presented which allows the separate queues in the ATM switch to be effectively logically combined into a single FIFO queue. The associative memory is described in detail and its feasibility is shown by laying out the Integrated Circuit masks and performing an analogue simulation of the IC's performance is SPICE3. Although optimisations were required to the original design, the feasibility of the approach is shown with a 15Ƞs write time and a 160Ƞs read time for a 32 row, 8 priority bit, 10 routing bit version of the memory. This is achieved with 2µm technology, more advanced technologies may result in even better performance. The various traffic models and switch models are simulated in a number of runs. This shows the performance of the hypercube which outperforms a Clos network of equivalent technology and approaches the performance of an ideal reference fabric. The associative memory leverages a significant performance advantage in the hypercube network and a modest advantage in the Clos network. The performance of the switches is shown to degrade with increasing traffic density, increasing locality of reference, increasing variance in the cell rate and increasing burst length. Interestingly, the fabrics show no real degradation in response to increasing self similarity in the fabric. Lastly, the appendices present suggestions on how redundancy, reliability and multicasting can be achieved in the hypercube fabric. An overview of integrated circuits is provided. A brief description of commercial ATM switching products is given. Lastly, a road map to the simulation code is provided in the form of descriptions of the functionality found in all of the files within the source tree. This is intended to provide the starting ground for anyone wishing to modify or extend the simulation system developed for this thesis

    Hybrid switching : converging packet and TDM flows in a single platform

    Optical fibers have brought fast and reliable data transmission to today’s network. The immense fiber build-out over the last few years has generated a wide array of new access technologies, transport and network protocols, and next-generation services in the Local Area Network (LAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), and Wide Area Network (WAN). All these different technologies, protocols, and services were introduced to address particular telecommunication needs. To remain competitive in the market, the service providers must offer most of these services, while maintaining their own profitability. However, offering a large variety of equipment, protocols, and services posses a big challenge for service carriers because it requires a huge investment in different technology platforms, lots of training of staff, and the management of all these networks. In today’s network, service providers use SONET (Synchronous Optical NETwork) as a basic TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) transport network. SONET was primarily designed to carry voice traffic from telephone networks. However, with the explosion of traffic in the Internet, the same SONET based TDM network is optimized to support increasing demand for packet based Internet network services (data, voice, video, teleconference etc.) at access networks and LANs. Therefore the service providers need to support their Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructure as well as in the legacy telephony infrastructure. Supporting both TDM and packet services in the present condition needs multilayer operations which is complex, expensive, and difficult to manage. A hybrid switch is a novel architecture that combines packets (IP) and TDM switching in a unified access platform and provides seamless integration of access networks and LANs with MAN/WAN networks. The ability to fully integrate these two capabilities in a single chassis will allow service providers to deploy a more cost effective and flexible architecture that can support a variety of different services. This thesis develops a hybrid switch which is capable of offering bundled services for TDM switching and packet routing. This is done by dividing the switch’s bandwidth into VT1.5 (Virtual Tributary -1.5) channels and providing SONET based signaling for routing the data and controlling the switch’s resources. The switch is a TDM based architecture which allows each switch’s port to be independently configured for any mixture of packet and TDM traffic, including 100% packet and 100% TDM. This switch allows service providers to simplify their edge networks by consolidating the number of separate boxes needed to provide fast and reliable access. This switch also reduces the number of network management systems needed, and decreases the resources needed to install, provision and maintain the network because of its ability to “collapse” two network layers into one platform. The scope of this thesis includes system architecture, logic implementation, and verification testing, and performance evaluation of the hybrid switch. The architecture consists of ingress/egress ports, an arbiter and a crossbar. Data from ingress ports is carried to the egress ports via VT1.5 channels which are switched at the cross point of the crossbar. The crossbar setup and channel assignments at ingress port are done by the arbiter. The design was tested by simulation and the hardware cost was estimated. The performance results showed that the switch is non-blocking, provide differentiated service, and has an overall effective throughput of 80%. This result is a significant step towards the goal of building a switch that can support multiprotocol and provide different network capabilities into one platform.
