    Towards Transportation Digital Twin Systems for Traffic Safety and Mobility Applications: A Review

    Digital twin (DT) systems aim to create virtual replicas of physical objects that are updated in real time with their physical counterparts and evolve alongside the physical assets throughout its lifecycle. Transportation systems are poised to significantly benefit from this new paradigm. In particular, DT technology can augment the capabilities of intelligent transportation systems. However, the development and deployment of networkwide transportation DT systems need to take into consideration the scale and dynamic nature of future connected and automated transportation systems. Motivated by the need of understanding the requirements and challenges involved in developing and implementing such systems, this paper proposes a hierarchical concept for a Transportation DT (TDT) system starting from individual transportation assets and building up to the entire networkwide TDT. A reference architecture is proposed for TDT systems that could be used as a guide in developing TDT systems at any scale within the presented hierarchical concept. In addition, several use cases are presented based upon the reference architecture which illustrate the utility of a TDT system from transportation safety, mobility and environmental applications perspective. This is followed by a review of current studies in the domain of TDT systems. Finally, the critical challenges and promising future research directions in TDT are discussed to overcome existing barriers to realize a safe and operationally efficient connected and automated transportation systems.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures; corrected issue in author(s) fiel

    Recent Progress on Digital Twins in Intelligent Connected Vehicles: A Review

    As an important enabling technology in the era of Industry 4.0, the intelligent connected vehicle (ICV) facilitates robust data interaction with the outside through sensors and communication technologies, ultimately making scientific decisions based on environmental perception information. However, due to constraints such as limited communication bandwidth and computing resources, the influx of data simultaneously impedes the sustainable optimisation of the vehicle decision making process at the same time. As a novel technology that effectively connects physical and virtual space, the special ability of the digital twin (DT) is to identify characteristics within a certain lifecycle, thereby garnering widespread attention across various industries. The purpose of this paper is to review the contribution of digital twins in the application field of intelligent vehicles and explore its potential for development. First, the key technologies of ICV provide a basis for the embedding of digital twins. Then, by analysing the development process and technical composition of digital twins, readers can better understand the concept of digital twins. Finally, the application of DTs in ICV is reviewed from the perspective of vehicles, traffic facilities, and occupants.     Digital Twin in the IoT context: a survey on technical features, scenarios and architectural models

    Digital Twin is an emerging concept that is gaining attention in various industries. It refers to the ability to clone a physical object into a software counterpart. The softwarized object, termed logical object, reflects all the important properties and characteristics of the original object within a specific application context. To fully determine the expected properties of the Digital Twin, this paper surveys the state of the art starting from the original definition within the manufacturing industry. It takes into account related proposals emerging in other fields, namely, Augmented and Virtual Reality (e.g., avatars), Multi-agent systems, and virtualization. This survey thereby allows for the identification of an extensive set of Digital Twin features that point to the “softwarization” of physical objects. To properly consolidate a shared Digital Twin definition, a set of foundational properties is identified and proposed as a common ground outlining the essential characteristics (must-haves) of a Digital Twin. Once the Digital Twin definition has been consolidated, its technical and business value is discussed in terms of applicability and opportunities. Four application scenarios illustrate how the Digital Twin concept can be used and how some industries are applying it. The scenarios also lead to a generic DT architectural Model. This analysis is then complemented by the identification of software architecture models and guidelines in order to present a general functional framework for the Digital Twin. The paper, eventually, analyses a set of possible evolution paths for the Digital Twin considering its possible usage as a major enabler for the softwarization process

    Intelligent and Low Overhead Network Synchronization over Large-Scale Industrial Internet of Things Systems

    With the extensive development of information and communication technologies and vertical industry applications, industrial IoT (IIoT) systems are expected to enable a wide variety of applications, including advanced manufacturing, networked control, and smart supply chain, which all exclusively hinge on the efficient cooperation and coordination among the involved IIoT machines and infrastructures. The ubiquitous connection among IIoT entities and the associated exchange of collaborative information necessitate the achievement of accurate network synchronization, which can guarantee the temporal alignment of the critical information. To enhance the temporal correlation of heterogeneous devices in large-scale IIoT systems, this thesis aims at designing industry-oriented network synchronization protocols in terms of accuracy improvement, resource-saving, and security enhancement with the assistance of learning-based methods. Initially, the real-time timestamps and historical information of each IIoT devices are collected and analyzed to explore the varying rate of the skew (VRS) at each enclosed clock. K-means clustering algorithm is adopted to organize the distributed devices into a few groups, and each of them is assigned with an optimized synchronization frequency to avoid potential resource waste while ensuring synchronization accuracy. Historical VRS values are further utilized as the identification of each clock for providing verification information so that the security against message manipulation attacks during network synchronization can be enhanced. Moreover, a digital twin-enabled clock model is established by comprehensively investigating the characteristics of each clock with diversified operating environments. A cloud-edge-collaborative system architecture is orchestrated to enhance the efficiency of data gathering and processing. With the assistance of the accurate estimation generated by the digital twin model for each clock, the situation-awareness of network synchronization is enhanced in terms of a better understanding of the clock feature and necessary synchronization frequency. Meanwhile, since temporal information generated at each local IIoT devices are efficiently gathered at the edge devices, the effect of packet delay variation is significantly reduced while the synchronization performance under various network conditions can be guaranteed. To further reduce the network resource consumption and improvement the performance under abnormal behaviors during network synchronization, a passive network synchronization protocol based on concurrent observations is proposed, where timestamps are exchanged without occupying dedicated network resources during synchronization. The proposed scheme is established based on the fact that a group of IIoT devices close to each other can observe the same physical phenomena, e.g., electromagnetic signal radiation, almost simultaneously. Moreover, multiple relay nodes are coordinated by the cloud center to disseminate the reference time information throughout the IIoT system in accomplishing global network synchronization. Additionally, a principal component analysis-assisted outlier detection mechanism is designed to tackle untrustworthy timestamps in the network according to the historical observation instants recorded in the cloud center. Simulation results indicate that accurate network synchronization can be achieved with significantly reduced explicit interactions
