    The use of computational geometry techniques to resolve the issues of coverage and connectivity in wireless sensor networks

    Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) enhance the ability to sense and control the physical environment in various applications. The functionality of WSNs depends on various aspects like the localization of nodes, the strategies of node deployment, and a lifetime of nodes and routing techniques, etc. Coverage is an essential part of WSNs wherein the targeted area is covered by at least one node. Computational Geometry (CG) -based techniques significantly improve the coverage and connectivity of WSNs. This paper is a step towards employing some of the popular techniques in WSNs in a productive manner. Furthermore, this paper attempts to survey the existing research conducted using Computational Geometry-based methods in WSNs. In order to address coverage and connectivity issues in WSNs, the use of the Voronoi Diagram, Delaunay Triangulation, Voronoi Tessellation, and the Convex Hull have played a prominent role. Finally, the paper concludes by discussing various research challenges and proposed solutions using Computational Geometry-based techniques.Web of Science2218art. no. 700

    Distributed navigation of multi-robot systems for sensing coverage

    A team of coordinating mobile robots equipped with operation specific sensors can perform different coverage tasks. If the required number of robots in the team is very large then a centralized control system becomes a complex strategy. There are also some areas where centralized communication turns into an issue. So, a team of mobile robots for coverage tasks should have the ability of decentralized or distributed decision making. This thesis investigates decentralized control of mobile robots specifically for coverage problems. A decentralized control strategy is ideally based on local information and it can offer flexibility in case there is an increment or decrement in the number of mobile robots. We perform a broad survey of the existing literature for coverage control problems. There are different approaches associated with decentralized control strategy for coverage control problems. We perform a comparative review of these approaches and use the approach based on simple local coordination rules. These locally computed nearest neighbour rules are used to develop decentralized control algorithms for coverage control problems. We investigate this extensively used nearest neighbour rule-based approach for developing coverage control algorithms. In this approach, a mobile robot gives an equal importance to every neighbour robot coming under its communication range. We develop our control approach by making some of the mobile robots playing a more influential role than other members of the team. We develop the control algorithm based on nearest neighbour rules with weighted average functions. The approach based on this control strategy becomes efficient in terms of achieving a consensus on control inputs, say heading angle, velocity, etc. The decentralized control of mobile robots can also exhibit a cyclic behaviour under some physical constraints like a quantized orientation of the mobile robot. We further investigate the cyclic behaviour appearing due to the quantized control of mobile robots under some conditions. Our nearest neighbour rule-based approach offers a biased strategy in case of cyclic behaviour appearing in the team of mobile robots. We consider a clustering technique inside the team of mobile robots. Our decentralized control strategy calculates the similarity measure among the neighbours of a mobile robot. The team of mobile robots with the similarity measure based approach becomes efficient in achieving a fast consensus like on heading angle or velocity. We perform a rigorous mathematical analysis of our developed approach. We also develop a condition based on relaxed criteria for achieving consensus on velocity or heading angle of the mobile robots. Our validation approach is based on mathematical arguments and extensive computer simulations

    Development of a GIS-based method for sensor network deployment and coverage optimization

    Au cours des dernières années, les réseaux de capteurs ont été de plus en plus utilisés dans différents contextes d’application allant de la surveillance de l’environnement au suivi des objets en mouvement, au développement des villes intelligentes et aux systèmes de transport intelligent, etc. Un réseau de capteurs est généralement constitué de nombreux dispositifs sans fil déployés dans une région d'intérêt. Une question fondamentale dans un réseau de capteurs est l'optimisation de sa couverture spatiale. La complexité de l'environnement de détection avec la présence de divers obstacles empêche la couverture optimale de plusieurs zones. Par conséquent, la position du capteur affecte la façon dont une région est couverte ainsi que le coût de construction du réseau. Pour un déploiement efficace d'un réseau de capteurs, plusieurs algorithmes d'optimisation ont été développés et appliqués au cours des dernières années. La plupart de ces algorithmes reposent souvent sur des modèles de capteurs et de réseaux simplifiés. En outre, ils ne considèrent pas certaines informations spatiales de l'environnement comme les modèles numériques de terrain, les infrastructures construites humaines et la présence de divers obstacles dans le processus d'optimisation. L'objectif global de cette thèse est d'améliorer les processus de déploiement des capteurs en intégrant des informations et des connaissances géospatiales dans les algorithmes d'optimisation. Pour ce faire, trois objectifs spécifiques sont définis. Tout d'abord, un cadre conceptuel est développé pour l'intégration de l'information contextuelle dans les processus de déploiement des réseaux de capteurs. Ensuite, sur la base du cadre proposé, un algorithme d'optimisation sensible au contexte local est développé. L'approche élargie est un algorithme local générique pour le déploiement du capteur qui a la capacité de prendre en considération de l'information spatiale, temporelle et thématique dans différents contextes d'applications. Ensuite, l'analyse de l'évaluation de la précision et de la propagation d'erreurs est effectuée afin de déterminer l'impact de l'exactitude des informations contextuelles sur la méthode d'optimisation du réseau de capteurs proposée. Dans cette thèse, l'information contextuelle a été intégrée aux méthodes d'optimisation locales pour le déploiement de réseaux de capteurs. L'algorithme développé est basé sur le diagramme de Voronoï pour la modélisation et la représentation de la structure géométrique des réseaux de capteurs. Dans l'approche proposée, les capteurs change leur emplacement en fonction des informations contextuelles locales (l'environnement physique, les informations de réseau et les caractéristiques des capteurs) visant à améliorer la couverture du réseau. La méthode proposée est implémentée dans MATLAB et est testée avec plusieurs jeux de données obtenus à partir des bases de données spatiales de la ville de Québec. Les résultats obtenus à partir de différentes études de cas montrent l'efficacité de notre approche.In recent years, sensor networks have been increasingly used for different applications ranging from environmental monitoring, tracking of moving objects, development of smart cities and smart transportation system, etc. A sensor network usually consists of numerous wireless devices deployed in a region of interest. A fundamental issue in a sensor network is the optimization of its spatial coverage. The complexity of the sensing environment with the presence of diverse obstacles results in several uncovered areas. Consequently, sensor placement affects how well a region is covered by sensors as well as the cost for constructing the network. For efficient deployment of a sensor network, several optimization algorithms are developed and applied in recent years. Most of these algorithms often rely on oversimplified sensor and network models. In addition, they do not consider spatial environmental information such as terrain models, human built infrastructures, and the presence of diverse obstacles in the optimization process. The global objective of this thesis is to improve sensor deployment processes by integrating geospatial information and knowledge in optimization algorithms. To achieve this objective three specific objectives are defined. First, a conceptual framework is developed for the integration of contextual information in sensor network deployment processes. Then, a local context-aware optimization algorithm is developed based on the proposed framework. The extended approach is a generic local algorithm for sensor deployment, which accepts spatial, temporal, and thematic contextual information in different situations. Next, an accuracy assessment and error propagation analysis is conducted to determine the impact of the accuracy of contextual information on the proposed sensor network optimization method. In this thesis, the contextual information has been integrated in to the local optimization methods for sensor network deployment. The extended algorithm is developed based on point Voronoi diagram in order to represent geometrical structure of sensor networks. In the proposed approach sensors change their location based on local contextual information (physical environment, network information and sensor characteristics) aiming to enhance the network coverage. The proposed method is implemented in MATLAB and tested with several data sets obtained from Quebec City spatial database. Obtained results from different case studies show the effectiveness of our approach

    Spatio-temporal coverage optimization of sensor networks

    Les réseaux de capteurs sont formés d’un ensemble de dispositifs capables de prendre individuellement des mesures d’un environnement particulier et d’échanger de l’information afin d’obtenir une représentation de haut niveau sur les activités en cours dans la zone d’intérêt. Une telle détection distribuée, avec de nombreux appareils situés à proximité des phénomènes d’intérêt, est pertinente dans des domaines tels que la surveillance, l’agriculture, l’observation environnementale, la surveillance industrielle, etc. Nous proposons dans cette thèse plusieurs approches pour effectuer l’optimisation des opérations spatio-temporelles de ces dispositifs, en déterminant où les placer dans l’environnement et comment les contrôler au fil du temps afin de détecter les cibles mobiles d’intérêt. La première nouveauté consiste en un modèle de détection réaliste représentant la couverture d’un réseau de capteurs dans son environnement. Nous proposons pour cela un modèle 3D probabiliste de la capacité de détection d’un capteur sur ses abords. Ce modèle inègre également de l’information sur l’environnement grâce à l’évaluation de la visibilité selon le champ de vision. À partir de ce modèle de détection, l’optimisation spatiale est effectuée par la recherche du meilleur emplacement et l’orientation de chaque capteur du réseau. Pour ce faire, nous proposons un nouvel algorithme basé sur la descente du gradient qui a été favorablement comparée avec d’autres méthodes génériques d’optimisation «boites noires» sous l’aspect de la couverture du terrain, tout en étant plus efficace en terme de calculs. Une fois que les capteurs placés dans l’environnement, l’optimisation temporelle consiste à bien couvrir un groupe de cibles mobiles dans l’environnement. D’abord, on effectue la prédiction de la position future des cibles mobiles détectées par les capteurs. La prédiction se fait soit à l’aide de l’historique des autres cibles qui ont traversé le même environnement (prédiction à long terme), ou seulement en utilisant les déplacements précédents de la même cible (prédiction à court terme). Nous proposons de nouveaux algorithmes dans chaque catégorie qui performent mieux ou produits des résultats comparables par rapport aux méthodes existantes. Une fois que les futurs emplacements de cibles sont prédits, les paramètres des capteurs sont optimisés afin que les cibles soient correctement couvertes pendant un certain temps, selon les prédictions. À cet effet, nous proposons une méthode heuristique pour faire un contrôle de capteurs, qui se base sur les prévisions probabilistes de trajectoire des cibles et également sur la couverture probabiliste des capteurs des cibles. Et pour terminer, les méthodes d’optimisation spatiales et temporelles proposées ont été intégrées et appliquées avec succès, ce qui démontre une approche complète et efficace pour l’optimisation spatio-temporelle des réseaux de capteurs.Sensor networks consist in a set of devices able to individually capture information on a given environment and to exchange information in order to obtain a higher level representation on the activities going on in the area of interest. Such a distributed sensing with many devices close to the phenomena of interest is of great interest in domains such as surveillance, agriculture, environmental monitoring, industrial monitoring, etc. We are proposing in this thesis several approaches to achieve spatiotemporal optimization of the operations of these devices, by determining where to place them in the environment and how to control them over time in order to sense the moving targets of interest. The first novelty consists in a realistic sensing model representing the coverage of a sensor network in its environment. We are proposing for that a probabilistic 3D model of sensing capacity of a sensor over its surrounding area. This model also includes information on the environment through the evaluation of line-of-sight visibility. From this sensing model, spatial optimization is conducted by searching for the best location and direction of each sensor making a network. For that purpose, we are proposing a new algorithm based on gradient descent, which has been favourably compared to other generic black box optimization methods in term of performance, while being more effective when considering processing requirements. Once the sensors are placed in the environment, the temporal optimization consists in covering well a group of moving targets in the environment. That starts by predicting the future location of the mobile targets detected by the sensors. The prediction is done either by using the history of other targets who traversed the same environment (long term prediction), or only by using the previous displacements of the same target (short term prediction). We are proposing new algorithms under each category which outperformed or produced comparable results when compared to existing methods. Once future locations of targets are predicted, the parameters of the sensors are optimized so that targets are properly covered in some future time according to the predictions. For that purpose, we are proposing a heuristics for making such sensor control, which deals with both the probabilistic targets trajectory predictions and probabilistic coverage of sensors over the targets. In the final stage, both spatial and temporal optimization method have been successfully integrated and applied, demonstrating a complete and effective pipeline for spatiotemporal optimization of sensor networks

    Life below water is the 14th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) envisaged by the United Nations and is aimed at conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development. It is not difficult to argue that signals and image technologies may play an essential role in achieving the foreseen targets linked to SDG 14. Besides increasing the general knowledge of ocean health by means of data analysis, methodologies based on signal and image processing can be helpful in environmental monitoring, in protecting and restoring ecosystems, in finding new sensor technologies for green routing and eco-friendly ships, in providing tools for implementing best practices for sustainable fishing, as well as in defining frameworks and intelligent systems for enforcing sea law and making the sea a safer and more secure place. Imaging is also a key element for the exploration of the underwater world for various scopes, ranging from the predictive maintenance of sub-sea pipelines and other infrastructure projects, to the discovery, documentation, and protection of sunken cultural heritage. The scope of this Special Issue encompasses investigations into techniques and ICT approaches and, in particular, the study and application of signal- and image-based methods and, in turn, exploration of the advantages of their application in the previously mentioned areas

    Decentralized Collision-Free Control of Multiple Robots in 2D and 3D Spaces

    Decentralized control of robots has attracted huge research interests. However, some of the research used unrealistic assumptions without collision avoidance. This report focuses on the collision-free control for multiple robots in both complete coverage and search tasks in 2D and 3D areas which are arbitrary unknown. All algorithms are decentralized as robots have limited abilities and they are mathematically proved. The report starts with the grid selection in the two tasks. Grid patterns simplify the representation of the area and robots only need to move straightly between neighbor vertices. For the 100% complete 2D coverage, the equilateral triangular grid is proposed. For the complete coverage ignoring the boundary effect, the grid with the fewest vertices is calculated in every situation for both 2D and 3D areas. The second part is for the complete coverage in 2D and 3D areas. A decentralized collision-free algorithm with the above selected grid is presented driving robots to sections which are furthest from the reference point. The area can be static or expanding, and the algorithm is simulated in MATLAB. Thirdly, three grid-based decentralized random algorithms with collision avoidance are provided to search targets in 2D or 3D areas. The number of targets can be known or unknown. In the first algorithm, robots choose vacant neighbors randomly with priorities on unvisited ones while the second one adds the repulsive force to disperse robots if they are close. In the third algorithm, if surrounded by visited vertices, the robot will use the breadth-first search algorithm to go to one of the nearest unvisited vertices via the grid. The second search algorithm is verified on Pioneer 3-DX robots. The general way to generate the formula to estimate the search time is demonstrated. Algorithms are compared with five other algorithms in MATLAB to show their effectiveness

    Safe navigation and motion coordination control strategies for unmanned aerial vehicles

    Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become very popular for many military and civilian applications including in agriculture, construction, mining, environmental monitoring, etc. A desirable feature for UAVs is the ability to navigate and perform tasks autonomously with least human interaction. This is a very challenging problem due to several factors such as the high complexity of UAV applications, operation in harsh environments, limited payload and onboard computing power and highly nonlinear dynamics. Therefore, more research is still needed towards developing advanced reliable control strategies for UAVs to enable safe navigation in unknown and dynamic environments. This problem is even more challenging for multi-UAV systems where it is more efficient to utilize information shared among the networked vehicles. Therefore, the work presented in this thesis contributes towards the state-of-the-art in UAV control for safe autonomous navigation and motion coordination of multi-UAV systems. The first part of this thesis deals with single-UAV systems. Initially, a hybrid navigation framework is developed for autonomous mobile robots using a general 2D nonholonomic unicycle model that can be applied to different types of UAVs, ground vehicles and underwater vehicles considering only lateral motion. Then, the more complex problem of three-dimensional (3D) collision-free navigation in unknown/dynamic environments is addressed. To that end, advanced 3D reactive control strategies are developed adopting the sense-and-avoid paradigm to produce quick reactions around obstacles. A special case of navigation in 3D unknown confined environments (i.e. tunnel-like) is also addressed. General 3D kinematic models are considered in the design which makes these methods applicable to different UAV types in addition to underwater vehicles. Moreover, different implementation methods for these strategies with quadrotor-type UAVs are also investigated considering UAV dynamics in the control design. Practical experiments and simulations were carried out to analyze the performance of the developed methods. The second part of this thesis addresses safe navigation for multi-UAV systems. Distributed motion coordination methods of multi-UAV systems for flocking and 3D area coverage are developed. These methods offer good computational cost for large-scale systems. Simulations were performed to verify the performance of these methods considering systems with different sizes

    Intelligent deployment strategies for passive underwater sensor networks

    Passive underwater sensor networks are often used to monitor a general area of the ocean, a port or military installation, or to detect underwater vehicles near a high value unit at sea, such as a fuel ship or aircraft carrier. Deploying an underwater sensor network across a large area of interest (AOI), for military surveillance purposes, is a significant challenge due to the inherent difficulties posed by the underwater channel in terms of sensing and communications between sensors. Moreover, monetary constraints, arising from the high cost of these sensors and their deployment, limit the number of available sensors. As a result, sensor deployment must be done as efficiently as possible. The objective of this work is to develop a deployment strategy for passive underwater sensors in an area clearance scenario, where there is no apparent target for an adversary to gravitate towards, such as a ship or a port, while considering all factors pertinent to underwater sensor deployment. These factors include sensing range, communications range, monetary costs, link redundancy, range dependence, and probabilistic visitation. A complete treatment of the underwater sensor deployment problem is presented in this work from determining the purpose of the sensor field to physically deploying the sensors. Assuming a field designer is given a suboptimal number of sensors, they must be methodically allocated across an AOI. The Game Theory Field Design (GTFD) model, proposed in this work, is able to accomplish this task by evaluating the acoustic characteristics across the AOI and allocating sensors accordingly. Since GTFD considers only circular sensing coverage regions, an extension is proposed to consider irregularly shaped regions. Sensor deployment locations are planned using a proposed evolutionary approach, called the Underwater Sensor Deployment Evolutionary Algorithm, which utilizes two suitable network topologies, mesh and cluster. The effects of these topologies, and a sensor\u27s communications range, on the sensing capabilities of a sensor field, are also investigated. Lastly, the impact of deployment imprecision on the connectivity of an underwater sensor field, using a mesh topology, is analyzed, for cases where sensor locations after deployment do not exactly coincide with planned sensor locations
