Learning with Algebraic Invariances, and the Invariant Kernel Trick
When solving data analysis problems it is important to integrate prior
knowledge and/or structural invariances. This paper contributes by a novel
framework for incorporating algebraic invariance structure into kernels. In
particular, we show that algebraic properties such as sign symmetries in data,
phase independence, scaling etc. can be included easily by essentially
performing the kernel trick twice. We demonstrate the usefulness of our theory
in simulations on selected applications such as sign-invariant spectral
clustering and underdetermined ICA
ANTIDS: Self-Organized Ant-based Clustering Model for Intrusion Detection System
Security of computers and the networks that connect them is increasingly
becoming of great significance. Computer security is defined as the protection
of computing systems against threats to confidentiality, integrity, and
availability. There are two types of intruders: the external intruders who are
unauthorized users of the machines they attack, and internal intruders, who
have permission to access the system with some restrictions. Due to the fact
that it is more and more improbable to a system administrator to recognize and
manually intervene to stop an attack, there is an increasing recognition that
ID systems should have a lot to earn on following its basic principles on the
behavior of complex natural systems, namely in what refers to
self-organization, allowing for a real distributed and collective perception of
this phenomena. With that aim in mind, the present work presents a
self-organized ant colony based intrusion detection system (ANTIDS) to detect
intrusions in a network infrastructure. The performance is compared among
conventional soft computing paradigms like Decision Trees, Support Vector
Machines and Linear Genetic Programming to model fast, online and efficient
intrusion detection systems.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, Swarm Intelligence and Patterns (SIP)- special

Application of artificial neural network in market segmentation: A review on recent trends
Despite the significance of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) algorithm to
market segmentation, there is a need of a comprehensive literature review and a
classification system for it towards identification of future trend of market
segmentation research. The present work is the first identifiable academic
literature review of the application of neural network based techniques to
segmentation. Our study has provided an academic database of literature between
the periods of 2000-2010 and proposed a classification scheme for the articles.
One thousands (1000) articles have been identified, and around 100 relevant
selected articles have been subsequently reviewed and classified based on the
major focus of each paper. Findings of this study indicated that the research
area of ANN based applications are receiving most research attention and self
organizing map based applications are second in position to be used in
segmentation. The commonly used models for market segmentation are data mining,
intelligent system etc. Our analysis furnishes a roadmap to guide future
research and aid knowledge accretion and establishment pertaining to the
application of ANN based techniques in market segmentation. Thus the present
work will significantly contribute to both the industry and academic research
in business and marketing as a sustainable valuable knowledge source of market
segmentation with the future trend of ANN application in segmentation.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures,3 Table
Bi-Objective Nonnegative Matrix Factorization: Linear Versus Kernel-Based Models
Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) is a powerful class of feature
extraction techniques that has been successfully applied in many fields, namely
in signal and image processing. Current NMF techniques have been limited to a
single-objective problem in either its linear or nonlinear kernel-based
formulation. In this paper, we propose to revisit the NMF as a multi-objective
problem, in particular a bi-objective one, where the objective functions
defined in both input and feature spaces are taken into account. By taking the
advantage of the sum-weighted method from the literature of multi-objective
optimization, the proposed bi-objective NMF determines a set of nondominated,
Pareto optimal, solutions instead of a single optimal decomposition. Moreover,
the corresponding Pareto front is studied and approximated. Experimental
results on unmixing real hyperspectral images confirm the efficiency of the
proposed bi-objective NMF compared with the state-of-the-art methods
