    Overvoltage at motor terminals in SiC-based PWM drives

    Key points in the development of More Electrical Aircraft (MEA) are currently DC power distribution in higher voltage levels (540 V) and the use of disruptive technology such as Wide BandGap (WBG) semiconductors in power inverters. Using WBG components (SiC and GaN) increases the power converter mass density. However, fast switching of WBG components (tens of kV/s) induces voltage transient overshoots due to parasitic elements within the inverter. In addition, propagation and reflection phenomena along the harness connected to this inverter, even for small lengths, cause a significant voltage overshoot across the loads. Such overvoltage in Adjustable Speed Drives (ASD: association of inverter, harness and motor) supplied by the new HVDC 540 V aeronautical network could be fatal for the Electrical Insulation System (EIS). This paper proposes a fast and accurate modeling methodology to predict transient overvoltage; it allows us to analyze the impact of SiC inverter technology on overvoltage at motor terminals

    Sensorless control of surface mounted permanent magnet machine using fundamental PWM excitation

    This thesis describes the development of a sensorless control method for a surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous machine drive system. The saturation saliency in the machine is tracked from the stator current transient response to the fundamental space vector PWM (pulse width modulation) excitation. The rotor position and speed signals are obtained from measurements of the stator current derivative during the voltage vectors contained in the normal fundamental PWM sequence. In principle, this scheme can work over a wide speed range. However, the accuracy of the current derivative-measurements made during narrow voltage vectors reduces. This is because high frequency current oscillations exist after each vector switching instant, and these take a finite time to die down. Therefore, in this thesis, vector extension and compensation schemes are proposed which ensure correct current derivative measurements are made, even during narrow voltage vectors, so that any induced additional current distortion is kept to a minimum. The causes of the high frequency switching oscillations in the AC drive system are investigated and several approaches are developed to reduce the impact of these oscillations. These include the development of a novel modification to the IGBT gate drive circuit to reduce the requirement for PWM vector extension. Further improvements are made by modifications to the current derivative sensor design together with their associated signal processing circuits. In order to eliminate other harmonic disturbances and the high frequency noise appearing in the estimated position signals, an adaptive disturbance identifier and a tracking observer are incorporated to improve the position and speed signals. Experimental results show that the final sensorless control system can achieve excellent speed and position control performance

    Current derivative estimation for sensorless motor drives

    The work presented in this thesis aims to improve the performance of the Fundamental PWM sensorless control technique by proposing a new way to estimate current derivatives in the presence of high frequency oscillations. The Fundamental PWM technique offers performance across the entire speed range (including zero speed). The method requires current derivative measurements when certain PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) active and null vectors are applied to the machine. However the switching action of the active devices in the inverter and the associated large dv/dt result in current and current derivative waveforms being affected by high frequency oscillations which prevent accurate measurement of the current derivative. Other approaches have allowed these oscillations to decay before attempting to take a derivative measurement. This requires that the PWM vectors are applied to the machine for a time sufficient to allow the oscillations to decay and a derivative measurement to be made (the minimum pulse width). On some occasions this time is longer than the time a vector would have normally been applied for (for example when operating at low speed) and the vectors must be extended and later compensated. Vector extension introduces undesirable current distortion, audible noise, torque ripple and vibration. In this thesis the high frequency oscillations and their sources are investigated and a method of using Artificial Neural Networks to estimate current derivatives using only a short window of the transient current response is proposed. The method is able to estimate the derivative directly from phase current measurements affected by high frequency oscillations and thus allows a reduction in the minimum pulse width to be achieved (since it is no longer necessary to wait for the oscillations to fully decay) without the need for dedicated current derivative sensors. The performance of the technique is validated with experimental results

    Optimised design of isolated industrial power systems and system harmonics

    This work has focused on understanding the nature and impact of non-linear loads on isolated industrial power systems. The work was carried out over a period of 8 years on various industrial power systems: off-shore oil and gas facilities including an FPSO, a wellhead platform, gas production platforms, a mineral processing plant and an LNG plant. The observations regarding non-linear loads and electrical engineering work carried out on these facilities were incorporated into the report.A significant literature describing non-linear loads and system harmonics on industrial power systems was collected and reviewed. The literature was classified into five categories: industrial plants and system harmonics, non-linear loads as the source of current harmonics, practical issues with system harmonics, harmonic mitigation strategies and harmonic measurements.Off-shore oil and gas production facilities consist of a small compact power system. The power system incorporates either its own power generation or is supplied via subsea cable from a remote node. Voltage selection analysis and voltage drop calculation using commercially available power system analysis software are appropriate tools to analyse these systems. Non-linear loads comprise DC rectifiers, variable speed drives, UPS systems and thyristor controlled process heaters. All nonlinear loads produce characteristic and non-characteristic harmonics, while thyristor controlled process heaters generate inter-harmonics. Due to remote location, harmonic survey is not a common design practice. Harmonic current measurements during factory acceptance tests do not provide reliable information for accurate power system analysis.A typical mineral processing plant, located in a remote area includes its own power station. The power generation capacity of those systems is an order of magnitude higher than the power generation of a typical off-shore production facility. Those systems comprise large non-linear loads generating current and voltage interharmonics. Harmonic measurements and harmonic survey will provide a full picture of system harmonics on mineral processing plants which is the only practical way to determine system harmonics. Harmonic measurements on gearless mill drive at the factory are not possible as the GMD is assembled for the first time on site.LNG plants comprise large non-linear loads driving gas compressor, however those loads produce integer harmonics. Design by analysis process is an alternative to the current design process based on load lists. Harmonic measurements and harmonic survey provide a reliable method for determining power system harmonics in an industrial power system
