3rd Workshop in Symbolic Data Analysis: book of abstracts
This workshop is the third regular meeting of researchers interested in Symbolic Data Analysis. The main aim of the
event is to favor the meeting of people and the exchange of ideas from different fields - Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, among others - that contribute to Symbolic Data Analysis
Fuzzy C-ordered medoids clustering of interval-valued data
Fuzzy clustering for interval-valued data helps us to find natural vague boundaries in such data. The
Fuzzy c-Medoids Clustering (FcMdC) method is one of the most popular clustering methods based on a
partitioning around medoids approach. However, one of the greatest disadvantages of this method is its
sensitivity to the presence of outliers in data. This paper introduces a new robust fuzzy clustering
method named Fuzzy c-Ordered-Medoids clustering for interval-valued data (FcOMdC-ID). The Huber's
M-estimators and the Yager's Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) operators are used in the method
proposed to make it robust to outliers. The described algorithm is compared with the fuzzy c-medoids
method in the experiments performed on synthetic data with different types of outliers. A real application of the FcOMdC-ID is also provided
Probabilistic clustering of interval data
In this paper we address the problem of clustering interval data, adopting a model-based approach. To this purpose, parametric models for interval-valued variables are used which consider configurations for the variance-covariance matrix that take the nature of the interval data directly into account. Results, both on synthetic and empirical data, clearly show the well-founding of the proposed approach. The method succeeds in finding parsimonious heterocedastic models which is a critical feature in many applications. Furthermore, the analysis of the different data sets made clear the need to explicitly consider the intrinsic variability present in interval data.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Entropy-based fuzzy clustering of interval-valued time series
This paper proposes a fuzzy C-medoids-based clustering method with entropy regularization to solve the issue of grouping complex data as interval-valued time series. The dual nature of the data, that are both time-varying and interval-valued, needs to be considered and embedded into clustering techniques. In this work, a new dissimilarity measure,
based on Dynamic Time Warping, is proposed. The performance of the new clustering procedure is evaluated through a simulation study and an application to financial time series
Mathematical Fuzzy Logic in the Emerging Fields of Engineering, Finance, and Computer Sciences
Mathematical fuzzy logic (MFL) specifically targets many-valued logic and has significantly contributed to the logical foundations of fuzzy set theory (FST). It explores the computational and philosophical rationale behind the uncertainty due to imprecision in the backdrop of traditional mathematical logic. Since uncertainty is present in almost every real-world application, it is essential to develop novel approaches and tools for efficient processing. This book is the collection of the publications in the Special Issue “Mathematical Fuzzy Logic in the Emerging Fields of Engineering, Finance, and Computer Sciences”, which aims to cover theoretical and practical aspects of MFL and FST. Specifically, this book addresses several problems, such as:- Industrial optimization problems- Multi-criteria decision-making- Financial forecasting problems- Image processing- Educational data mining- Explainable artificial intelligence, etc
