    Optimum cost analysis for an Geo/Geo/c/N feedback queue under synchronous working vacations and impatient customers

    This paper concerns the cost optimisation analysis of a discrete-time finite-capacity multiserver queueing system with Bernoulli feedback, synchronous multiple and single working vacations, balking, and reneging during both busy and working vacation periods. A reneged customer can be retained in the system by employing certain persuasive mechanism for completion of service. Using recursive method, the explicit expressions for the stationary state probabilities are obtained. Various system performance measures are presented. Further, a cost model is formulated. Then, the optimization of the model is carried out using quadratic fit search method (QFSM). Finally, the impact of various system parameters on the performance measures of the queueing system is shown numerically.</p

    Analysis of a M/M/c queue with single and multiple synchronous working vacations

    We consider a M/M/c queuing system with synchronous working vacation and two different policies of working vacation i.e. a multiple working vacation policy and a single working policy. During a working vacation the server does not completely halts the service rather than it will render service at a lower rate. In synchronous vacation policy all the servers leave for a vacation simultaneously, when the server finds the system empty after finishing serving a customer. In multiple working vacation (MWV) policy the servers continue to take vacation till they find the system nonempty at a vacation completion instant. Single working vacation (SWV) policy is different from the multiple working vacation policy in a way that, when the working vacation ends and servers find the system empty, they remains idle until the first arrival occurs rather than taking another vacation. We have derived explicit expressions for some performance measures in terms of two indexes by using PGF method. We derived some results regarding the limiting behavior of some performance measures based on these two indexes. A comparison between the models is carried out and numerical results are provided to illustrate the effects of various parameters on system performance measures

    A Retrial Queueing Model With Thresholds and Phase Type Retrial Times

    There is an extensive literature on retrial queueing models. While a majority of the literature on retrial queueing models focuses on the retrial times to be exponentially distributed (so as to keep the state space to be of a reasonable size), a few papers deal with nonexponential retrial times but with some additional restrictions such as constant retrial rate, only the customer at the head of the retrial queue will attempt to capture a free server, 2-state phase type distribution, and finite retrial orbit. Generally, the retrial queueing models are analyzed as level-dependent queues and hence one has to use some type of a truncation method in performing the analysis of the model. In this paper we study a retrial queueing model with threshold-type policy for orbiting customers in the context of nonexponential retrial times. Using matrix-analytic methods we analyze the model and compare with the classical retrial queueing model through a few illustrative numerical examples. We also compare numerically our threshold retrial queueing model with a previously published retrial queueing model that uses a truncation method

    Energy efficient medium access protocol for DS-CDMA based wireless sesor networks.

    Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2012.Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), a new class of devices, has the potential to revolutionize the capturing, processing, and communication of critical data at low cost. Sensor networks consist of small, low-power, and low-cost devices with limited computational and wireless communication capabilities. These sensor nodes can only transmit a finite number of messages before they run out of energy. Thus, reducing the energy consumption per node for end-to-end data transmission is an important design consideration for WSNs. The Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols aim at providing collision-free access to the wireless medium. MAC protocols also provide the most direct control over the utilization of the transceiver, which consumes most of the energy of the sensor nodes. The major part of this thesis is based on a proposed MAC protocol called Distributed Receiver-oriented MAC (DRMACSN) protocol for code division multiple access (CDMA) based WSNs. The proposed MAC protocol employs the channel load blocking scheme to reduce energy consumption in the network. The performance of the proposed MAC protocol is verified through simulations for average packet throughput, average delay and energy consumption. The performance of the proposed MAC protocol is also compared to the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC and the MAC without the channel load sensing scheme via simulations. An analytical model is derived to analyse the average packet throughput and average energy consumption performance for the DRMACSN MAC protocol. The packet success probability, the message success and blocking probabilities are derived for the DRMACSN MAC protocol. The discrete-time multiple vacation queuing models are used to model the delay behaviour of the DRMACSN MAC protocol. The Probability Generating Functions (PGF) of the arrivals of new messages in sleep, back-off and transmit states are derived. The PGF of arrivals of retransmitted packets of a new message are also derived. The queue length and delay expressions for both the Bernoulli and Poisson message arrival models are derived. Comparison between the analytical and simulation results shows that the analytical model is accurate. The proposed MAC protocol is aimed at having an improved average packet throughput, a reduced packet delay, reduced energy consumption performance for WSN

    This thesis identifies and analyses the key creative protocols in translocal performance practice, and ends with suggestions for new forms of transversal live and mediated performance practice, informed by theory. It argues that ontologies of emergence in dynamic systems nourish contemporary practice in the digital arts. Feedback in self-organised, recursive systems and organisms elicit change, and change transforms. The arguments trace concepts from chaos and complexity theory to virtual multiplicity, relationality, intuition and individuation (in the work of Bergson, Deleuze, Guattari, Simondon, Massumi, and other process theorists). It then examines the intersection of methodologies in philosophy, science and art and the radical contingencies implicit in the technicity of real-time, collaborative composition. Simultaneous forces or tendencies such as perception/memory, content/ expression and instinct/intellect produce composites (experience, meaning, and intuition- respectively) that affect the sensation of interplay. The translocal event is itself a diagram - an interstice between the forces of the local and the global, between the tendencies of the individual and the collective. The translocal is a point of reference for exploring the distribution of affect, parameters of control and emergent aesthetics. Translocal interplay, enabled by digital technologies and network protocols, is ontogenetic and autopoietic; diagrammatic and synaesthetic; intuitive and transductive. KeyWorx is a software application developed for realtime, distributed, multimodal media processing. As a technological tool created by artists, KeyWorx supports this intuitive type of creative experience: a real-time, translocal “jamming” that transduces the lived experience of a “biogram,” a synaesthetic hinge-dimension.     Searching to Translate and Translating to Search: When Information Retrieval Meets Machine Translation

    With the adoption of web services in daily life, people have access to tremendous amounts of information, beyond any human's reading and comprehension capabilities. As a result, search technologies have become a fundamental tool for accessing information. Furthermore, the web contains information in multiple languages, introducing another barrier between people and information. Therefore, search technologies need to handle content written in multiple languages, which requires techniques to account for the linguistic differences. Information Retrieval (IR) is the study of search techniques, in which the task is to find material relevant to a given information need. Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) is a special case of IR when the search takes place in a multi-lingual collection. Of course, it is not helpful to retrieve content in languages the user cannot understand. Machine Translation (MT) studies the translation of text from one language into another efficiently (within a reasonable amount of time) and effectively (fluent and retaining the original meaning), which helps people understand what is being written, regardless of the source language. Putting these together, we observe that search and translation technologies are part of an important user application, calling for a better integration of search (IR) and translation (MT), since these two technologies need to work together to produce high-quality output. In this dissertation, the main goal is to build better connections between IR and MT, for which we present solutions to two problems: Searching to translate explores approximate search techniques for extracting bilingual data from multilingual Wikipedia collections to train better translation models. Translating to search explores the integration of a modern statistical MT system into the cross-language search processes. In both cases, our best-performing approach yielded improvements over strong baselines for a variety of language pairs. Finally, we propose a general architecture, in which various components of IR and MT systems can be connected together into a feedback loop, with potential improvements to both search and translation tasks. We hope that the ideas presented in this dissertation will spur more interest in the integration of search and translation technologies

Since DES is a technique applied in incredibly different areas, this book reflects many different points of view about DES, thus, all authors describe how it is understood and applied within their context of work, providing an extensive understanding of what DES is. It can be said that the name of the book itself reflects the plurality that these points of view represent. The book embraces a number of topics covering theory, methods and applications to a wide range of sectors and problem areas that have been categorised into five groups. As well as the previously explained variety of points of view concerning DES, there is one additional thing to remark about this book: its richness when talking about actual data or actual data based analysis. When most academic areas are lacking application cases, roughly the half part of the chapters included in this book deal with actual problems or at least are based on actual data. Thus, the editor firmly believes that this book will be interesting for both beginners and practitioners in the area of DES

    Modeling usage of an online research community

    Although online communities have been thought of as a new way for collaboration across geographic boundaries in the scientific world, they have a problem attracting people to keep visiting. The main purpose of this study is to understand how people behave in such communities, and to build and evaluate tools to stimulate engagement in a research community. These tools were designed based on a research framework of factors that influence online participation and relationship development. There are two main objectives for people to join an online community, information sharing and interpersonal relationship development, such as friends or colleagues. The tools designed in this study are to serve both information sharing and interpersonal relationship development needs. The awareness tool is designed to increase the sense of a community and increase the degree of social presence of members in the community. The recommender system is designed to help provide higher quality and personalized information to community members. It also helps to match community members into subgroups based on their interests. The designed tools were implemented in a field site - the Asynchronous Learning Networks (ALN) Research community. A longitudinal field study was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the designed tools. This research explored people\u27s behavior inside a research community by analyzing web server logs. The results show that although there are not many interactions in the community space, the WebCenter has been visited extensively by its members. There are over 2,000 hits per day on average and over 5,000 article accesses during the observation period. This research also provided a framework to identify factors that affect people\u27s engagement in an online community. The research framework was tested using the PLS modeling method with online survey responses. The results show that perceived usefulness performs a very significant role in members\u27 intention to continue using the system and their perceived preliminary networking. The results also show that the quality of the content of the system is a strong indicator for both perceived usefulness of the community space and perceived ease of use of the community system. Perceived ease of use did not show a strong correlation with intention to continue use which was consistent with other studies of Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). For the ALN research community, this online community helps its members to broaden their contacts, improve the quality and quantity of their research, and increase the dissemination of knowledge among community members
