    Optimal Exploitation of the Sentinel-2 Spectral Capabilities for Crop Leaf Area Index Mapping

    The continuously increasing demand of accurate quantitative high quality information on land surface properties will be faced by a new generation of environmental Earth observation (EO) missions. One current example, associated with a high potential to contribute to those demands, is the multi-spectral ESA Sentinel-2 (S2) system. The present study focuses on the evaluation of spectral information content needed for crop leaf area index (LAI) mapping in view of the future sensors. Data from a field campaign were used to determine the optimal spectral sampling from available S2 bands applying inversion of a radiative transfer model (PROSAIL) with look-up table (LUT) and artificial neural network (ANN) approaches. Overall LAI estimation performance of the proposed LUT approach (LUTN₅₀) was comparable in terms of retrieval performances with a tested and approved ANN method. Employing seven- and eight-band combinations, the LUTN₅₀ approach obtained LAI RMSE of 0.53 and normalized LAI RMSE of 0.12, which was comparable to the results of the ANN. However, the LUTN50 method showed a higher robustness and insensitivity to different band settings. Most frequently selected wavebands were located in near infrared and red edge spectral regions. In conclusion, our results emphasize the potential benefits of the Sentinel-2 mission for agricultural applications

    Population Synthesis via k-Nearest Neighbor Crossover Kernel

    The recent development of multi-agent simulations brings about a need for population synthesis. It is a task of reconstructing the entire population from a sampling survey of limited size (1% or so), supplying the initial conditions from which simulations begin. This paper presents a new kernel density estimator for this task. Our method is an analogue of the classical Breiman-Meisel-Purcell estimator, but employs novel techniques that harness the huge degree of freedom which is required to model high-dimensional nonlinearly correlated datasets: the crossover kernel, the k-nearest neighbor restriction of the kernel construction set and the bagging of kernels. The performance as a statistical estimator is examined through real and synthetic datasets. We provide an "optimization-free" parameter selection rule for our method, a theory of how our method works and a computational cost analysis.     Constrained multi-agent ergodic area surveying control based on finite element approximation of the potential field

    Heat Equation Driven Area Coverage (HEDAC) is a state-of-the-art multi-agent ergodic motion control guided by a gradient of a potential field. A finite element method is hereby implemented to obtain a solution of Helmholtz partial differential equation, which models the potential field for surveying motion control. This allows us to survey arbitrarily shaped domains and to include obstacles in an elegant and robust manner intrinsic to HEDAC's fundamental idea. For a simple kinematic motion, the obstacles and boundary avoidance constraints are successfully handled by directing the agent motion with the gradient of the potential. However, including additional constraints, such as the minimal clearance dsitance from stationary and moving obstacles and the minimal path curvature radius, requires further alternations of the control algorithm. We introduce a relatively simple yet robust approach for handling these constraints by formulating a straightforward optimization problem based on collision-free escapes route maneuvers. This approach provides a guaranteed collision avoidance mechanism, while being computationally inexpensive as a result of the optimization problem partitioning. The proposed motion control is evaluated in three realistic surveying scenarios simulations, showing the effectiveness of the surveying and the robustness of the control algorithm. Furthermore, potential maneuvering difficulties due to improperly defined surveying scenarios are highlighted and we provide guidelines on how to overpass them. The results are promising and indiacate real-world applicability of proposed constrained multi-agent motion control for autonomous surveying and potentially other HEDAC utilizations.Comment: Revised manuscrip

    Using Internet in Stated Preference Surveys: A Review and Comparison of Survey Modes

    Internet is quickly becoming the survey mode of choice for stated preference (SP) surveys in environmental economics. However, this choice is being made with relatively little consideration of its potential influence on survey results. This paper reviews the theory and emerging evidence of mode effects in the survey methodology and SP literatures, summarizes the findings, and points out implications for Internet SP practice and research. The SP studies that compare Internet with other modes do generally not find substantial difference. The majority of welfare estimates are equal; or somewhat lower for the Internet surveys. Further, there is no clear evidence of substantially lower quality or validity of Internet responses. However, the degree of experimental control is often low in comparative studies across survey modes, and they often confound measurement and sample composition effects. Internet offers a huge potential for experimentation and innovation in SP research, but when used to derive reliable welfare estimates for policy assessment, issues like representation and nonresponse bias for different Internet panels should receive more attention.Internet; survey mode; contingent valuation; stated preferences

    Binary Adaptive Semi-Global Matching Based on Image Edges

    Image-based modeling and rendering is currently one of the most challenging topics in Computer Vision and Photogrammetry. The key issue here is building a set of dense correspondence points between two images, namely dense matching or stereo matching. Among all dense matching algorithms, Semi-Global Matching (SGM) is arguably one of the most promising algorithms for real-time stereo vision. Compared with global matching algorithms, SGM aggregates matching cost from several (eight or sixteen) directions rather than only the epipolar line using Dynamic Programming (DP). Thus, SGM eliminates the classical “streaking problem” and greatly improves its accuracy and efficiency. In this paper, we aim at further improvement of SGM accuracy without increasing the computational cost. We propose setting the penalty parameters adaptively according to image edges extracted by edge detectors. We have carried out experiments on the standard Middlebury stereo dataset and evaluated the performance of our modified method with the ground truth. The results have shown a noticeable accuracy improvement compared with the results using fixed penalty parameters while the runtime computational cost was not increased

    Retrieving shallow shear-wave velocity profiles from 2D seismic-reflection data with severely aliased surface waves

    The inversion of surface-wave phase-velocity dispersion curves provides a reliable method to derive near-surface shear-wave velocity profiles. In this work, we invert phase-velocity dispersion curves estimated from 2D seismic-reflection data. These data cannot be used to image the first 50 m with seismic-reflection processing techniques due to the presence of indistinct first breaks and significant NMO-stretching of the shallow reflections. A surface-wave analysis was proposed to derive information about the near surface in order to complement the seismic-reflection stacked sections, which are satisfactory for depths between 50 and 700 m. In order to perform the analysis, we had to overcome some problems, such as the short acquisition time and the large receiver spacing, which resulted in severe spatial aliasing. The analysis consists of spatial partitioning of each line in segments, picking of the phase-velocity dispersion curves for each segment in the f-k domain, and inversion of the picked curves using the neighborhood algorithm. The spatial aliasing is successfully circumvented by continuously tracking the surface-wave modal curves in the f-k domain. This enables us to sample the curves up to a frequency of 40 Hz, even though most components beyond 10 Hz are spatially aliased. The inverted 2D VS sections feature smooth horizontal layers, and a sensitivity analysis yields a penetration depth of 20–25 m. The results suggest that long profiles may be more efficiently surveyed by using a large receiver separation and dealing with the spatial aliasing in the described way, rather than ensuring that no spatially aliased surface waves are acquired.Fil: Onnis, Luciano Emanuel.     A soil sampling program for the Netherlands

    Soil data users in The Netherlands were inventoried for current and future data needs. Prioritized data needs were used to design the Netherlands Soil Sampling Program (NSSP) as a framework containing 3 groups of related projects: map upgrading, map updating and upgrading of pedotransfer functions. In each one group, the sampling design, performance criteria and optimal sample size were defined. This paper focuses on the upgrading of the existing soil map of The Netherlands at scale 1:50,000, and extensively treats the user inventory and the sampling strategy. The sampling design, performance criteria of the sampling and associated optimal sample size were obtained by statistical analysis of soil data available before the sampling. The Phosphate Sorption Capacity (PSC) was chosen as target variable to optimize sampling, because it dominated total cost per sample. A prior analysis of a performance criterion related to the sampling error of PSC resulted in a cost saving of 13% relative to total cost determined earlier by expert judgment. A posterior analysis showed that the set quality criterion was reached or better in 6 out of 7 cases. The NSSP resulted in a data base with soil data from 2524 sample points selected by stratified random sampling, and a collection of 5764 aliquots taken at these points. The NSSP has been showing its usage potential for various kinds of environmental studies and could be a sound future basis for a national scale monitoring program
