    2D multi-objective placement algorithm for free-form components

    This article presents a generic method to solve 2D multi-objective placement problem for free-form components. The proposed method is a relaxed placement technique combined with an hybrid algorithm based on a genetic algorithm and a separation algorithm. The genetic algorithm is used as a global optimizer and is in charge of efficiently exploring the search space. The separation algorithm is used to legalize solutions proposed by the global optimizer, so that placement constraints are satisfied. A test case illustrates the application of the proposed method.     Optimal multi-block mesh generation for CFD

    An assessment of various automatic block topology generation techniques for creating structured meshes has been performed in the first part of the paper. The objective is to find out optimal blocking methods for generating meshes suitable for flow simulations. The comparison has been carried out using an adjoint based error analysis of the meshes generated by these block topologies. Different objective functions and numerical schemes have been used for this assessment. It is found that, in general, the medial axis based approaches provide optimal blocking and yields better accuracy in computing the functional of interest. This is because the medial axis based methods produce meshes which have better flow alignment specially in case of internal flows. In the second part of the paper, the adjoint based error indicator has been used to adapt the block topology in the regions of large error.Rolls Royce, plc TSB SILOET II TS/L00691X/

    Using polyhedral models to automatically sketch idealized geometry for structural analysis

    Simplification of polyhedral models, which may incorporate large numbers of faces and nodes, is often required to reduce their amount of data, to allow their efficient manipulation, and to speed up computation. Such a simplification process must be adapted to the use of the resulting polyhedral model. Several applications require simplified shapes which have the same topology as the original model (e.g. reverse engineering, medical applications, etc.). Nevertheless, in the fields of structural analysis and computer visualization, for example, several adaptations and idealizations of the initial geometry are often necessary. To this end, within this paper a new approach is proposed to simplify an initial manifold or non-manifold polyhedral model with respect to bounded errors specified by the user, or set up, for example, from a preliminary F.E. analysis. The topological changes which may occur during a simplification because of the bounded error (or tolerance) values specified are performed using specific curvature and topological criteria and operators. Moreover, topological changes, whether or not they kept the manifold of the object, are managed simultaneously with the geometric operations of the simplification process

    Structural Optimisation: Biomechanics of the Femur

    A preliminary iterative 3D meso-scale structural model of the femur was developed, in which bar and shell elements were used to represent trabecular and cortical bone respectively. The cross-sectional areas of the bar elements and the thickness values of the shell elements were adjusted over successive iterations of the model based on a target strain stimulus, resulting in an optimised construct. The predicted trabecular architecture, and cortical thickness distribution showed good agreement with clinical observations, based on the application of a single leg stance load case during gait. The benefit of using a meso-scale structural approach in comparison to micro or macro-scale continuum approaches to predictive bone modelling was achievement of the symbiotic goals of computational efficiency and structural description of the femur.Comment: Accepted by Engineering and Computational Mechanics (Proceedings of the ICE

    Emergent Structure Detection for Multi-Axis Machining

    This paper examines the phenomenon of emergent structures that occur in the transient stock material during multi-axis rough machining from a plurality of fixed orientations. Taking the form of thin webs and strings, emergent structures are stock material conditions that can lead to catastrophic failure during machining, even when tool path verification is successful. We begin by discussing the motivation for use of fixed orientations in multi-axis machining using multiple automated setups via rotary axes, which enables fast processing and ‘first part correct’ machining. Next, we demonstrate how unintended emergent structures occur in this paradigm of machining and can lead to catastrophic failure of the tool or work piece. Our original work focuses on the problem of geometric detection of these structures during process planning and prior to tool path planning, to the end of altogether avoiding emergent structure formation. To quickly simulate the machining process, we present an object-space method for determining the transient state of stock material based on the inverse tool offset. To identify emergent structures within this transient stock state, we propose a metric based on the medial axis transformation. Finally, we present our implementation of these methods and demonstrate realtime computation appropriate for an optimization scheme to eliminate emergent structures. Our methods provide consistent and logical results, as demonstrated with several freeform component examples. This work enables the development of robust algorithms for autonomous tool path planning and machining in multi-axis environments

    Mesh adaptation for high-order flow simulations

    Mesh adaptation has only been considered for high-order flow simulations in recent years and many techniques are still to be made more robust and efficient with curvilinear meshes required by these high-order methods. This thesis covers the developments made to improve the mesh generation and adaptation capabilities of the open-source spectral/hp element framework Nektar++ and its dedicated mesh utility NekMesh. This thesis first covers the generation of quality initial meshes typically required before an iterative adaptation procedure can be used. For optimal performance of the spectral/hp element method, quadrilateral and hexahedral meshes are preferred and two methods are presented to achieve this, either entirely or partially. The first method, inspired from cross field methods, solves a Laplace problem to obtain a guiding field from which a valid two-dimensional quadrilateral block decomposition can be automatically obtained. In turn, naturally curved meshes are generated. The second method takes advantage of the medial axis to generate structured partitions in the boundary layer region of three-dimensional domains. The method proves to be robust in generating hybrid high-order meshes with boundary layer aligned prismatic elements near boundaries and tetrahedral elements elsewhere. The thesis goes on to explore the adaptation of high-order meshes for the simulation of flows using a spectral/hp element formulation. First a new approach to moving meshes, referred to here as r-adaptation, based on a variational framework, is described. This new r-adaptation module is then enhanced by p-adaptation for the simulation of compressible inviscid flows with shocks. Where the flow is smooth, p-adaptation is used to benefit from the spectral convergence of the spectral/hp element methods. Where the flow is discontinuous, e.g. at shock waves, r-adaptation clusters nodes together to better capture these field discontinuities. The benefits of this dual, rp-adaptation approach are demonstrated through two-dimensional benchmark test cases.Open Acces
