    A review of connection admission control algorithms for ATM networks

    The emergence of high-speed networks such as those with ATM integrates large numbers of services with a wide range of characteristics. Admission control is a prime instrument for controlling congestion in the network. As part of connection services to an ATM system, the Connection Admission Control (CAC) algorithm decides if another call or connection can be admitted to the Broadband Network. The main task of the CAC is to ensure that the broadband resources will not saturate or overflow within a very small probability. It limits the connections and guarantees Quality of Service for the new connection. The algorithm for connection admission is crucial in determining bandwidth utilisation efficiency. With statistical multiplexing more calls can be allocated on a network link, while still maintaining the Quality of Service specified by the connection with traffic parameters and type of service. A number of algorithms for admission control for Broadband Services with ATM Networks are described and compared for performance under different traffic loads. There is a general description of the ATM Network as an introduction. Issues to do with source distributions and traffic models are explored in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 provides an extensive presentation of the CAC algorithms for ATM Broadband Networks. The ideas about the Effective Bandwidth are reviewed in Chapter 4, and a different approach to admission control using online measurement is presented in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 has the numerical evaluation of four of the key algorithms, with simulations. Finally Chapter 7 has conclusions of the findings and explores some possibilities for further work

    Impact of Mobility and Wireless Channel on the Performance of Wireless Networks

    This thesis studies the impact of mobility and wireless channel characteristics, i. e. , variability and high bit-error-rate, on the performance of integrated voice and data wireless systems from network, transport protocol and application perspectives. From the network perspective, we study the impact of user mobility on radio resource allocation. The goal is to design resource allocation mechanisms that provide seamless mobility for voice calls while being fair to data calls. In particular, we develop a distributed admission control for a general integrated voice and data wireless system. We model the number of active calls in a cell of the network as a Gaussian process with time-dependent mean and variance. The Gaussian model is updated periodically using the information obtained from neighboring cells about their load conditions. We show that the proposed scheme guarantees a prespecified dropping probability for voice calls while being fair to data calls. Furthermore, the scheme is stable, insensitive to user mobility process and robust to load variations. From the transport protocol perspective, we study the impact of wireless channel variations and rate scheduling on the performance of elastic data traffic carried by TCP. We explore cross-layer optimization of the rate adaptation feature of cellular networks to optimize TCP throughput. We propose a TCP-aware scheduler that switches between two rates as a function of TCP sending rate. We develop a fluid model of the steady-state TCP behavior for such a system and derive analytical expressions for TCP throughput that explicitly account for rate variability as well as the dependency between the scheduler and TCP. The model is used to choose RF layer parameters that, in conjunction with the TCP-aware scheduler, improve long-term TCP throughput in wireless networks. A distinctive feature of our model is its ability to capture variability of round-trip-time, channel rate and packet error probability inherent to wireless communications. From the application perspective, we study the performance of wireless messaging systems. Two popular wireless applications, the short messaging service and multimedia messaging service are considered. We develop a mathematical model to evaluate the performance of these systems taking into consideration the fact that each message tolerates only a limited amount of waiting time in the system. Using the model, closed-form expressions for critical performance parameters such as message loss, message delay and expiry probability are derived. Furthermore, a simple algorithm is presented to find the optimal temporary storage size that minimizes message delay for a given set of system parameters

    High volume conveyor sortation system analysis

    The design and operation of a high volume conveyor sortation system are important due to its high cost, large footprint and critical role in the system. In this thesis, we study the characteristics of the conveyor sortation system from performance evaluation and design perspectives employing continuous modeling approaches. We present two continuous conveyor models (Delay and Stock Model and Batch on Conveyor Model) with different representation accuracy in a unified mathematical framework. Based on the Batch on Conveyor Model, we develop a fast fluid simulation methodology. We address the feasibility of implementing fluid simulation from modeling capabilities, algorithm design and simulation performance in terms of accuracy and simulation time. From a design perspective, we focus on rates determination and accumulation design in the accumulation and merge subsystem. The optimization problem is to find a minimum cost design that satisfies some predefined performance requirements under stochastic conditions. We first transform this stochastic programming problem into a deterministic nonlinear programming problem through sample path based optimization method. A gradient based method is adopted to solve the deterministic problem. Since there is no closed form for performance metric even for a deterministic input stream, we adopt continuous modeling to develop deterministic performance evaluation models and conduct sensitivity analysis on these models. The papers (and authors) come from all parts of the world, confirming the international stature of this Workshop. The majority of the contributions are from Europe (France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, UK). However, a significant number is from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Iran, Korea and USA. The proceedings also include two invited papers.
