Accent Levelling in the Regional French of Alsace
The aim of this study is to investigate the process of accent levelling in the Regional French of Alsace and its relationship with the social variables of age, gender, social class, urban or rural origin of speakers and feelings of regional attachment. Accent levelling, which can be defined as the process of speakers abandoning local phonological forms in favour of supralocal variants, has been the focus of much recent sociolinguistic research on British English, French and other languages. Since knowledge of Alsatian (a Germanic language spoken in Alsace) is decreasing, it is possible that the resulting lack of interference between Alsatian and French is leading to levelling of the traditional accent features of Alsatian Regional French. In order to provide data for this research project, sociolinguistic interviews were conducted and written questionnaires used in Strasbourg and in the village of Helsheim (a fictional name used for reasons of confidentiality) with 56 informants. The data obtained were then subjected to quantitative analysis with regard to the linguistic variables of aspirate h (which can be realised as a supralocal zero variant or as a regional [h] variant) and the devoicing of canonically voiced plosives and fricatives (for example, sage pronounced [saʃ]). The results of the data analysis revealed that the regional variants of both linguistic variables are used more frequently by older than younger, working class than middle class, rural than urban speakers and that level of regional attachment correlates with use of the linguistic variables, as predicted in the research hypotheses. However, the relationship between levelling and gender proved to be more unexpected, with no clear pattern emerging for the (h) variable and a complex one involving the acquisition of supralocal patterns of sociolinguistic variation as well as the supralocal phonological variant in the case of consonant devoicing.Arts and Humanities Research Counci

Speech rhythm: the language-specific integration of pitch and duration
Experimental phonetic research on speech rhythm seems to have reached an impasse. Recently, this research field has tended to investigate produced (rather than perceived) rhythm, focussing on timing, i.e. duration as an acoustic cue, and has not considered that rhythm perception might be influenced by native language. Yet evidence from other areas of phonetics, and other disciplines, suggests that an investigation of rhythm is needed which (i) focuses on listeners’ perception, (ii) acknowledges the role of several acoustic cues, and (iii) explores whether the relative significance of these cues differs between languages. This thesis, the originality of which derives from its adoption of these three perspectives combined, indicates new directions for progress. A series of perceptual experiments investigated the interaction of duration and f0 as perceptual cues to prosody in languages with different prosodic structures – Swiss German, Swiss French, and French (i.e. from France). The first experiment demonstrated that a dynamic f0 increases perceived syllable duration in contextually isolated pairs of monosyllables, for all three language groups. The second experiment found that dynamic f0 and increased duration interact as cues to rhythmic groups in series of monosyllabic digits and letters; the two cues were significantly more effective than one when heard simultaneously, but significantly less effective than one when heard in conflicting positions around the rhythmic-group boundary location, and native language influenced whether f0 or duration was the more effective cue.
These two experiments laid the basis for the third, which directly addressed rhythm. Listeners were asked to judge the rhythmicality of sentences with systematic duration and f0 manipulations; the results provide evidence that duration and f0 are interdependent cues in rhythm perception, and that the weighting of each cue varies in different languages. A fourth experiment applied the perceptual results to production data, to develop a rhythm metric which captures the multi-dimensional and language-specific nature of perceived rhythm in speech production. These findings have the important implication that if future phonetic research on rhythm follows these new perspectives, it may circumvent the impasse and advance our knowledge and model of speech rhythm.This work was funded by an AHRC doctoral award to the author
Texas Alsatian: Henri Castro's legacy
Retrieved from: [LINK]http://hdl.handle.net/2152/19838[/LINK]This study constitutes the first in-depth description and analysis of Texas Alsatian as spoken in Medina County, Texas, in the twenty-first century. The Alsatian dialect was transported to Texas in 1842, when the entrepreneur Henri Castro recruited colonists from the Alsace to fulfill the Texas Republic’s stipulations for populating his land grant located to the west of San Antonio. Texas Alsatian (TxAls)is a dialect distinct from other varieties of Texas German (Gilbert 1972: 1, Salmons 1983: 191) and is mainly spoken in Eastern Medina County in and around the city of Castroville. With a small and aging speaker population, it has not been transmitted to the next generation and will likely survive for only another two to three decades. Despite this endangered status, TxAls is a language undergoing death with minimal change. This study provides both a descriptive account of TxAls and discussions on extralinguistic factors linked to ethnic identity and language loyalty, which have enabled the maintenance of this distinctive Texas German dialect for 150 years. To investigate the extent of the maintenance of lexical, phonological, and morphological features, this study identifies the main donor dialect(s), Upper Rhine Alsatian, and compares its linguistic features to those presently maintained in the community, based on current data collected between 2007 and 2009 and Gilbert’s (1972) data collected in the 1960s. This discussion of TxAls is three-fold: (1) an analysis of social, historical, political, and economic factors affecting the maintenance and decline of TxAls, (2) a detailed structural analysis of the grammatical features of TxAls, supported by a description of its European donor dialect and substantiated by Gilbert’s (1972) data, and (3) a discussion of the participants’ attitudes toward their ancestral language, which have either contributed to the maintenance of TxAls, or are now accelerating its decline, based on responses to a survey developed for the TxAls community, the Alsatian Questionnaire
Genius Envy
In Genius Envy Adrianna M. Paliyenko uncovers a forgotten past: the multiplicity and diversity of nineteenth-century French women’s poetic voices. Conservative critics of the time attributed genius to masculinity and dismissed the work of female authors as “feminine literature.” Despite the efforts of leading thinkers, critics, and historians to erase women from the pages of literary history, Paliyenko shows how female poets invigorated the debate about the origins of genius and garnered recognition in their time for their creativity and bold aesthetic ideas.
This fresh account of French women poets’ contributions to literature probes the history of their critical reception and considers the texts of celebrated writers such as Desbordes-Valmore, Ségalas, Blanchecotte, Siefert, and Ackermann. The results show that these women explicitly challenged the notion of genius as gendered, advocating for their rightful place in the canon
Minority languages between reformation and revolution
In this thesis, I intend to further our knowledge of the sociolinguistics of Early Modern
minority languages. Social and political developments in North-Western Europe in the
16th to 18th centuries caused an emancipation of vernacular languages, which took over
from Latin as the main language in official domains. The sociolinguistics of this change
are well known (e.g. Burke 2004); the fate of languages that did not make it to this new
status, emerging ‘minority languages’, remains under-researched.
Chapter 2 introduces some of the terminology used in this study. I discuss four categories
of research methods into minority language shift and how they are applicable to research
on historical situations, which often suffers from ‘bad data’. I then present a model of
ethnolinguistic vitality that I use to survey the socio-historical backgrounds of several
minority language groups in Chapter 3.
Chapter 3 begins with a brief presentation of minority language groups from the Early
Modern period. I choose three language groups to focus on in more depth: speakers of
Norn in Shetland, of Flemish in Northern France, and of Sorbian in Germany. A survey of
these three cases, with the initial wider presentation, identifies three recurring issues that
are the focus of the subsequent chapters.
The first of these is the influence of demographic change (Chapter 4). In the formation of
nation-states in this period, many speakers of the majority language migrate to peripheral
minority-language areas. I present two historical-demographic studies showing the integration
of immigrants into the local community through intermarriage, based on 17th-century
population registers from Shetland and Dunkirk (France). Both show a large amount of intermarriage, despite a bias towards in-group marriage. Intermarriage brings the majority
language into the minority-language home; the strength of the bias against intermarriage
is likely to be a factor in the rate of shift, one of the main differences between Shetland
and Dunkirk.
Language policies are the topic of Chapter 5. They are an important part of minority
language studies in the present day, particularly with regard to language maintenance. I
survey the language legislation that existed in Shetland, French Flanders, and Lusatia, its
purpose and implementation, and its effects on language shift. Purpose and implementation
of language policies were limited, and its effect on minority language communities
therefore only secondary.
Chapter 6 is about target varieties in language shift. The question of whether language
shift happened through education in a standard variety or through contacts with majoritylanguage
speakers from nearby areas can be answered by looking at the new majoritylanguage
dialect in the minority area.
I undertake two different studies in this context. The first is an analysis of Shetland Scots
using theories of dialect contact. The dialect has a number of ‘standardised’ features, but
I argue these are mainly due to koinéisation of various dialects of Scots immigrants to
Shetland and a second-language variety of Scots spoken by the local population. The
second is a study of the French dialect of French Flanders using computational methods
of data comparison on data taken from dialect atlases. This dialect shares features with
neighbouring Picard dialects, but we can also identify Standard French features. This
pattern correlates with what we know of migration to the area (Chapter 4). Both new
dialects suggest the shifting population acquired the majority language mainly through
contacts with majority-language speakers in their direct environment.
In conclusion, I show that language shift in the Early Modern period was an organic
process, where the inception, the rate, and the result of shift were steered by the minority population’s social networks. The influence of institutions often blamed for language
shift in modern situations – educational and language policies – was very restricted. In
addition, I show that methods used in modern sociolinguistics can be successfully applied
to historical situations, despite the bad data problem. This opens the door for more
extensive research into the area
A study in synchronic and diachronic phonology
Synopsis:
Velar Fronting (VF) is the name for any synchronic or diachronic phonological process shifting the velar place of articulation to the palatal region of the vocal tract. A well-known case of VF in Standard German is the rule specifying that the fricative [x] assimilates to [ç] after front segments. VF also refers to the change from velar sounds like [ɣ k g ŋ] to palatals ([ʝ c ɟ ɲ]). The book provides a thorough investigation of VF in German dialects: Data are drawn from over 300 original sources for varieties that are (or were) spoken in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and other countries.
VF differs geographically along three parameters: (A) triggers, (B) targets, and (C) outputs. VF triggers (=A) are typically defined according to vowel height: In some systems VF is induced only by high front vowels, in others by high and mid front vowels, and in yet others by high, mid, and low front vowels. Some varieties treat consonants ([r l n]) as triggers, while others do not. VF can be nonassimilatory, in which case the rule applies even in the context of back segments. In many varieties of German, VF targets (=B) consist of the two fricatives [x ɣ], but in other dialects the targets comprise [x] but not [ɣ]. In some places, VF affects not only [x ɣ], but also velar stops and the velar nasal. The output of VF (=C) is typically palatal [ç] (given the input [x]), but in many other places it is the alveolopalatal [ɕ].
A major theme is the way in which VF interacts with synchronic and diachronic changes creating or eliminating structures which can potentially undergo it or trigger it. In many dialects the relationship between velars ([x]) and palatals ([ҫ]) is transparent because velars only occur in the back vowel context and palatals only when adjacent to front sounds. In that type of system, independent processes can either feed VF (by creating additional structures which the latter can undergo), or they can bleed it (by eliminating potential structures to which VF could apply).
In other dialects, VF is opaque. In one opaque system, both velars ([x]) and palatals ([ҫ]) surface in the context of front segments. Thus, in addition to expected front vowel plus palatal sequences ([…iç…]), there are also unexpected ones consisting of front vowel plus velar ([…ix…]). In a second type of opaque system, velars and palatals are found in the context of back segments; hence, expected sequences such as […iç…] occur in addition to unexpected ones like […ɑç…]
