    Adapting port cluster theory to contextualise the remarkable rise of the gold rushes port of Melbourne: 1851–1861

    The research question that forms the basis of this thesis asks how and what drove the port of Melbourne to advance 30–50 years growth in less than ten during the 1850s gold era. To answer this question this thesis modifies and tests a new methodological approach to read the port’s growth driven by a close reading and evaluation of port cluster theory. Developed in the early 2000s the theory synthesises elements that constitute a port and operations through a wide range of components and activities. Recognising that a twenty-first-century port is not the same as a mid-nineteenth-century port, through advances brought on by a wide range of modern technologies, the theory has been historicised to dismantle the 1851–1861 gold era port of Melbourne to recognise its parts and how it was built. One of the tools to be enhanced and expanded for this is the cluster table of components and activities, providing specifics for activities undertaken at a mid-nineteenth-century port. A key constituent this propels the research forward when applied at Melbourne’s four ports of central Melbourne, Sandridge (Port Melbourne), Williamstown, Footscray and the Saltwater (Maribyrnong) River (combined). The argument is made that the ports evolved to be a port cluster reinforced by the exploration of specific themes of defence, security, river punts, entrepreneurs, ballast trade, quarrying, railways, noxious industries, shipwreck salvage, shipbuilding, ship repairs, tourism and wharf construction as topics. This thesis then uses the evidence gained to claim that the port did indeed evolve into a cluster port by 1861. The wider implication of this research is that a new framework exists for understanding the complexities of a mid-nineteenth-century port and how this can be done in a systematic way. For this methodology to demonstrate utility outside the port of Melbourne, requires further testing at sites within Australia, and worldwide, for confirmation of universality.Doctor of Philosoph

    The evolution of new combinations: drivers of British maritime engineering competitiveness during the nineteenth century

    This work is an attempt to explore early British steamship innovation during the 19th century from the point of view of innovation studies. The proposed analytical framework draws on neo-Schumpeterian and evolutionary economics for understanding the patterns and factors behind the phenomenon of technical change in the capital good under analysis. The thesis aims at filling a gap in the maritime economic and technological history literature, namely the issues connected to the process through which modern (mechanically-propelled, iron-hulled, screw-driven) ocean transportation emerged. Two inter-related research questions are addressed: how and why did steamships evolve in the course of the 19th century? In other words, the present research focuses on describing the dynamics of technological evolution and on identifying the key drivers of those developments. While the thesis includes a review of the relevant literature (Part I), the main work consists of original empirical research (Parts II and III). The bulk of this work primarily rests on the compilation of two new main bodies of quantitative and qualitative evidence. First, a previously unpublished dataset on the population and characteristics of steamers is used to measure the rate and direction of technical change in steamers. Second, previously unpublished archival material is used to reconstruct the innovation processes of marine engineers and naval architects and the civil society arrangements around them. The results suggest a number of stylised facts and institutional variables that have been subject to little discussion in the extant literature. On one hand, time-series and other statistical analyses suggest a technological “take-off” of steamship performance by the mid-19th century. This turning point, which was the outcome of a complex but rapid process of structural reconfiguration (the transition from wood-paddle to iron-screw as the new “dominant design”), occurred between the late 1830s and the late 1840s particularly among cargo traders and unsubsidised packets. On the other hand, documentary evidence shows that such technological breakthroughs were preceded and supported by a specific set of institutional innovations. These included the emergence of voluntary engineering associations, technical mass media and a not-for-profit ship classification society within the British national system of innovation. The thesis argues that the process of revolutionary technological innovation leading to the economically efficient long-haul merchant steamer cannot be separated from the rise of a vibrant interactive environment promoting learning, knowledge integration and technological accumulation, which may be called a “technological public sphere”

    The jurist and philosopher, Jeremy Bentham, and his lesser-known brother, Samuel, equally talented but as a naval architect, engineer and inventor, had a long love affair with Russia. Jeremy hoped to assist Empress Catherine II with her legislative projects. Samuel went to St Petersburg to seek his fortune in 1780 and came back with the rank of Brigadier-General and the idea, famously publicised by Jeremy, of the Inspection-House or Panopticon. The Bentham Brothers and Russia chronicles the brothers’ later involvement with the Russian Empire, when Jeremy focused his legislative hopes on Catherine’s grandson Emperor Alexander I (ruled 1801-25) and Samuel found a unique opportunity in 1806 to build a Panopticon in St Petersburg – the only panoptical building ever built by the Benthams themselves. Setting the Benthams’ projects within an in-depth portrayal of the Russian context, Roger Bartlett illuminates an important facet of their later careers and offers insight into their world view and way of thought. He also contributes towards the history of legal codification in Russia, which reached a significant peak in 1830, and towards the demythologising of the Panopticon, made notorious by Michel Foucault: the St Petersburg building, still relatively unknown, is described here in detail on the basis of archival sources. The Benthams’ interactions with Russia under Alexander I constituted a remarkable episode in Anglo-Russian relations; this book fills a significant gap in their history

    The world of Kavanagh and Cottril: A portrait of Irish emigration, entrepreneurship, and ethnic diversity in mid-Maine, 1760-1820

    This dissertation examines a remarkable and little known episode in the peopling of early New England: The founding of an Irish-Catholic community in Lincoln County, Maine, 1760- 1820. It details the experience of over three hundred Irish families, tracing them to their Old World origins, following their progress across the Atlantic, and documenting their efforts to establish an ethnic and religious identity on the Maine frontier. Their story parallels the lives of two immigrants, James Kavanagh and Matthew Cottril, who made a fortune in the Maine timber trade and encouraged kin and countrymen to settle in tne new land. Their career serves as a springboard to discuss the dynamics of Irish migration into northern New England, the Hibernian networks of the Maine timber trade, and the nature of provincial merchant communities in early America - many of which attracted members from the margins of the Anglo-Celtic world. Kavanagh, Cottril and their Irish companions found a favorable environment in mid-Maine. They established themselves as traders, artisans, and farmers - settling in the timber outports of Lincoln County and the farming community of North Whitefield. While they largely assimilated the lifestyles and material culture of their new neighbors, the Irish were nonetheless able to transplant their religious traditions to northern New England, most visibly in the establishment of St. Patrick\u27s church in Damariscotta Mills. Founded in 1798 it is today the oldest standing Catholic church in New England. The experience of these Maine Irish challenge the traditional image of Catholic relations in early New England - one that is often understood within the setting of nativism and discrimination. Indeed, in Lincoln County one finds a surprising spirit of toleration for the Irish, as exemplified by inter-ethnic marriages between Yankee and Hibernian, the conversion of native New Englanders to the Roman faith, and the movement of prominent Irish into the public sphere. In large part this cultural acceptance was molded by the positive example of Irish elite such as James Kavanagh, and encouraged by novel conditions on the eastern frontier which placed a premium on energy and enterprise, rather than ethnic or religious affiliation

    French Huguenots made enormous contributions to the life and culture of colonial New York during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Huguenot craftsmen were the city's most successful artisans, turning out unrivaled works of furniture which were distinguished by unique designs and arcane details. More than just decorative flourishes, however, the visual language employed by Huguenot artisans reflected a distinct belief system shaped during the religious wars of sixteenth-century France.In Fortress of the Soul, historian Neil Kamil traces the Huguenots' journey to New York from the Aunis-Saintonge region of southwestern France. There, in the sixteenth century, artisans had created a subterranean culture of clandestine workshops and meeting places inspired by the teachings of Bernard Palissy, a potter, alchemist, and philosopher who rejected the communal, militaristic ideology of the Huguenot majority which was centered in the walled city of La Rochelle. Palissy and his followers instead embraced a more fluid, portable, and discrete religious identity that encouraged members to practice their beliefs in secret while living safely—even prospering—as artisans in hostile communities. And when these artisans first fled France for England and Holland, then left Europe for America, they carried with them both their skills and their doctrine of artisanal security.Drawing on significant archival research and fresh interpretations of Huguenot material culture, Kamil offers an exhaustive and sophisticated study of the complex worldview of the Huguenot community. From the function of sacred violence and alchemy in the visual language of Huguenot artisans, to the impact among Protestants everywhere of the destruction of La Rochelle in 1628, to the ways in which New York's Huguenots interacted with each other and with other communities of religious dissenters and refugees, Fortress of the Soul brilliantly places American colonial history and material life firmly within the larger context of the early modern Atlantic world
