The malaria system microApp: A new, mobile device-based tool for malaria diagnosis
Background: Malaria is a public health problem that affects remote areas worldwide. Climate change has contributed to the problem by allowing for the survival of Anopheles in previously uninhabited areas. As such, several groups have made developing news systems for the automated diagnosis of malaria a priority.
Objective: The objective of this study was to develop a new, automated, mobile device-based diagnostic system for malaria. The system uses Giemsa-stained peripheral blood samples combined with light microscopy to identify the Plasmodium falciparum species in the ring stage of development.
Methods: The system uses image processing and artificial intelligence techniques as well as a known face detection algorithm to identify Plasmodium parasites. The algorithm is based on integral image and haar-like features concepts, and makes use of weak classifiers with adaptive boosting learning. The search scope of the learning algorithm is reduced in the preprocessing step by removing the background around blood cells.
Results: As a proof of concept experiment, the tool was used on 555 malaria-positive and 777 malaria-negative previously-made slides. The accuracy of the system was, on average, 91%, meaning that for every 100 parasite-infected samples, 91 were identified correctly.
Conclusions: Accessibility barriers of low-resource countries can be addressed with low-cost diagnostic tools. Our system, developed for mobile devices (mobile phones and tablets), addresses this by enabling access to health centers in remote communities, and importantly, not depending on extensive malaria expertise or expensive diagnostic detection equipment.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Improved Quantum Algorithm for Triangle Finding via Combinatorial Arguments
In this paper we present a quantum algorithm solving the triangle finding
problem in unweighted graphs with query complexity , where
denotes the number of vertices in the graph. This improves the previous
upper bound recently obtained by Lee, Magniez and
Santha. Our result shows, for the first time, that in the quantum query
complexity setting unweighted triangle finding is easier than its edge-weighted
version, since for finding an edge-weighted triangle Belovs and Rosmanis proved
that any quantum algorithm requires queries.
Our result also illustrates some limitations of the non-adaptive learning graph
approach used to obtain the previous upper bound since, even over
unweighted graphs, any quantum algorithm for triangle finding obtained using
this approach requires queries as well. To
bypass the obstacles characterized by these lower bounds, our quantum algorithm
uses combinatorial ideas exploiting the graph-theoretic properties of triangle
finding, which cannot be used when considering edge-weighted graphs or the

On Multistage Learning a Hidden Hypergraph
Learning a hidden hypergraph is a natural generalization of the classical
group testing problem that consists in detecting unknown hypergraph
by carrying out edge-detecting tests. In the given paper we
focus our attention only on a specific family of localized
hypergraphs for which the total number of vertices , the number of

using the minimal number of tests. We develop an adaptive algorithm that
matches the information theory bound, i.e., the total number of tests of the

Embodied Artificial Intelligence through Distributed Adaptive Control: An Integrated Framework
In this paper, we argue that the future of Artificial Intelligence research
resides in two keywords: integration and embodiment. We support this claim by
analyzing the recent advances of the field. Regarding integration, we note that
the most impactful recent contributions have been made possible through the
integration of recent Machine Learning methods (based in particular on Deep
Learning and Recurrent Neural Networks) with more traditional ones (e.g.
Monte-Carlo tree search, goal babbling exploration or addressable memory
systems). Regarding embodiment, we note that the traditional benchmark tasks
(e.g. visual classification or board games) are becoming obsolete as
state-of-the-art learning algorithms approach or even surpass human performance
in most of them, having recently encouraged the development of first-person 3D
game platforms embedding realistic physics. Building upon this analysis, we
first propose an embodied cognitive architecture integrating heterogenous
sub-fields of Artificial Intelligence into a unified framework. We demonstrate
the utility of our approach by showing how major contributions of the field can
be expressed within the proposed framework. We then claim that benchmarking
environments need to reproduce ecologically-valid conditions for bootstrapping
the acquisition of increasingly complex cognitive skills through the concept of

Digital libraries (DL) have become one of the most typical ways of accessing any kind of digitalized information. Due to this key role, users welcome any improvements on the services they receive from digital libraries. One trend used to
improve digital services is through personalization. Up to now, the most common approach for personalization in digital libraries has been user-driven. Nevertheless, the design of efficient personalized services has to be done, at least in part, in
an automatic way. In this context, machine learning techniques automate the process of constructing user models.
