An involution on Dyck paths and its consequences

    Get PDF
AbstractAn involution is introduced in the set of all Dyck paths of semilength n from which one re-obtains easily the equidistribution of the parameters ‘number of valleys’ and ‘number of doublerises’ and also the equidistribution of the parameters ‘height of the first peak’ and ‘number of returns’

On the diagram of 132-avoiding permutations

The diagram of a 132-avoiding permutation can easily be characterized: it is simply the diagram of a partition. Based on this fact, we present a new bijection between 132-avoiding and 321-avoiding permutations. We will show that this bijection translates the correspondences between these permutations and Dyck paths given by Krattenthaler and by Billey-Jockusch-Stanley, respectively, to each other. Moreover, the diagram approach yields simple proofs for some enumerative results concerning forbidden patterns in 132-avoiding permutations.Comment: 20 pages; additional reference is adde

Motzkin paths, Motzkin polynomials and recurrence relations

    Get PDF
We consider the Motzkin paths which are simple combinatorial objects appearing in many contexts. They are counted by the Motzkin numbers, related to the well known Catalan numbers. Associated with the Motzkin paths, we introduce the Motzkin polynomial, which is a multi-variable polynomial "counting" all Motzkin paths of a certain type. Motzkin polynomials (also called Jacobi-Rogers polynomials) have been studied before, but here we deduce sonic properties based on recurrence relations. The recurrence relations proved here also allow an efficient computation of the Motzkin polynomials. Finally, we show that the matrix entries of powers of an arbitrary tridiagonal matrix are essentially given by Motzkin polynomials, a property commonly known but usually stated without proof

Bijections for lattice paths between two boundaries

    Get PDF
We prove that on the set of lattice paths with steps N=(0,1)N=(0,1) and E=(1,0)E=(1,0) that lie between two boundaries BB and TT, the two statistics `number of EE steps shared with BB' and `number of EE steps shared with TT' have a symmetric joint distribution. We give an involution that switches these statistics, preserves additional parameters, and generalizes to paths that contain steps S=(0,1)S=(0,-1) at prescribed xx-coordinates. We also show that a similar equidistribution result for other path statistics follows from the fact that the Tutte polynomial of a matroid is independent of the order of its ground set. Finally, we extend the two theorems to kk-tuples of paths between two boundaries, and we give some applications to Dyck paths, generalizing a result of Deutsch, and to pattern-avoiding permutations
