Coordination approaches and systems - part I : a strategic perspective
This is the first part of a two-part paper presenting a fundamental review and summary of research of design coordination and cooperation technologies. The theme of this review is aimed at the research conducted within the decision management aspect of design coordination. The focus is therefore on the strategies involved in making decisions and how these strategies are used to satisfy design requirements. The paper reviews research within collaborative and coordinated design, project and workflow management, and, task and organization models. The research reviewed has attempted to identify fundamental coordination mechanisms from different domains, however it is concluded that domain independent mechanisms need to be augmented with domain specific mechanisms to facilitate coordination. Evoplex: A platform for agent-based modeling on networks
Agent-based modeling and network science have been used extensively to
advance our understanding of emergent collective behavior in systems that are
composed of a large number of simple interacting individuals or agents. With
the increasing availability of high computational power in affordable personal
computers, dedicated efforts to develop multi-threaded, scalable and
easy-to-use software for agent-based simulations are needed more than ever.
Evoplex meets this need by providing a fast, robust and extensible platform for
developing agent-based models and multi-agent systems on networks. Each agent
is represented as a node and interacts with its neighbors, as defined by the
network structure. Evoplex is ideal for modeling complex systems, for example
in evolutionary game theory and computational social science. In Evoplex, the
models are not coupled to the execution parameters or the visualization tools,
and there is a user-friendly graphical interface which makes it easy for all
users, ranging from newcomers to experienced, to create, analyze, replicate and

Design patterns for multi-agent simulations
The advent of mobile agent technology has brought along a few difficulties in designing a stable, efficient and scalable system for a certain problem. Agent-based simulations prove to be powerful tools for economic analyses. In this paper we aim at describing a set of design patterns which were specifically built for agents and multi-agent systems. The details of each design pattern discussed are presented and the possible applications and known issues are noted. In order to aid the software designers, we provide some examples of the basic implementation of these patterns using the JADE multi-agent framework.intelligent agent, multi-agent design, multi-agent simulation.
An Agent-based approach to modelling integrated product teams undertaking a design activity.
The interactions between individual designers, within integrated product teams, and the nature of design tasks, all have a significant impact upon how well a design task can be performed, and hence the quality of the resultant product and the time in which it can be delivered. In this paper we describe an ongoing research project which aims to model integrated product teams through the use of multi-agent systems. We first describe the background and rationale for our work, and then present our initial computational model and results from the simulation of an integrated product team. The paper concludes with a discussion of how the model will evolve to improve the accuracy of the simulation
An approach to control collaborative processes in PLM systems
Companies that collaborate within the product development processes need to
implement an effective management of their collaborative activities. Despite
the implementation of a PLM system, the collaborative activities are not
efficient as it might be expected. This paper presents an analysis of the
problems related to the collaborative work using a PLM system. From this
analysis, we propose an approach for improving collaborative processes within a
PLM system, based on monitoring indicators. This approach leads to identify and
therefore to mitigate the brakes of the collaborative work
