    Optimal design of solidification processes

    An optimal design algorithm is presented for the analysis of general solidification processes, and is demonstrated for the growth of GaAs crystals in a Bridgman furnace. The system is optimal in the sense that the prespecified temperature distribution in the solidifying materials is obtained to maximize product quality. The optimization uses traditional numerical programming techniques which require the evaluation of cost and constraint functions and their sensitivities. The finite element method is incorporated to analyze the crystal solidification problem, evaluate the cost and constraint functions, and compute the sensitivities. These techniques are demonstrated in the crystal growth application by determining an optimal furnace wall temperature distribution to obtain the desired temperature profile in the crystal, and hence to maximize the crystal's quality. Several numerical optimization algorithms are studied to determine the proper convergence criteria, effective 1-D search strategies, appropriate forms of the cost and constraint functions, etc. In particular, we incorporate the conjugate gradient and quasi-Newton methods for unconstrained problems.     A hybrid approach to constrained global optimization

    In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid global optimization method to solve constrained optimization problems. An exact penalty function is first applied to approximate the original constrained optimization problem by a sequence of optimization problems with bound constraints. To solve each of these box constrained optimization problems, two hybrid methods are introduced, where two different strategies are used to combine limited memory BFGS (L-BFGS) with Greedy Diffusion Search (GDS). The convergence issue of the two hybrid methods is addressed. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, 18 box constrained and 4 general constrained problems from the literature are tested.     Design Optimization of Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage System Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Response Surface Methodology and Genetic Algorithm

    Product development processes involve computational methods like Computational Fluid Dynamics to simulate real world fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena numerically using computers. Also, traditional heuristic design methods require enormous numerical simulations to obtain optimum designs which makes these methods inefficient and highly expensive. This thesis presents a design of experiments-based approach to develop an optimization tool that can predict the optimum performance of a Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) [1], Response Surface Methodology (RSM) [2] [3], and Genetic Algorithm [4]. A cylindrical capsule filled with Phase Change Material (PCM) is used as a Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system or Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage (LHTES) system, which stores and releases heat as the PCM melts or solidifies respectively. Based of literature review and previous research, Outer Diameter and Wall thickness of the capsule were considered as the possible influencing parameters (i.e. design variables), whereas Melt time of PCM and Weight of cylindrical capsule were considered as the objective functions (output responses). The effects of design variables on the objective functions was studied using the results of CFD simulations and Central Composite Design as the Design of Experiments type. Single and Multi-Objective optimization was performed to find best possible results for the above two objectives in 6 different cases.     Condition trend prediction of aero-generator based on particle swarm optimization and fuzzy integral

    In order to improve and enhance the prediction accuracy and efficiency of aero-generator running trend, grasp its running condition, and avoid accidents happening, in this paper, auto-regressive and moving average model (ARMA) and least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) which are used to predict its running trend have been optimized using particle swarm optimization (PSO) based on using features found in real aero-generator life test, which lasts a long period of time on specialized test platform and collects mass data that reflects aero-generator characteristics, to build new models of PSO-ARMA and PSO-LSSVM. And we use fuzzy integral methodology to carry out decision fusion of the predicted results of these two new models. The research shows that the prediction accuracy of PSO-ARMA and PSO-LSSVM has been much improved on that of ARMA and LSSVM, and the results of decision fusion based on fuzzy integral methodology show further substantial improvement in accuracy than each particle swarm optimized model. Conclusion can be drawn that the optimized model and the decision fusion method presented in this paper are available in aero-generator condition trend prediction and have great value of engineering application

    Within the last few years environmental regulations, safety requirements and market competitions forced the automotive industry to open up a wide range of new technologies. Lightweight design is considered as one of the most innovative concepts to fulfil environmental, safety and many other objectives at competitive prices. Choosing the best design and production process in the development period is the most significant link in the automobile production chain. A wide range of design and process parameters needs to be evaluated to achieve numerous goals of production. These goals often stand in conflict with each other. In addition to the variation of the concepts and following the objectives, some limitations such as manufacturing restrictions, financial limits, and deadlines influence the choice of the best combination of variables. This study introduces a structural optimization tool for assemblies made of sheet metal, e.g. the automobile body, based on parametrization and evaluation of concepts in CAD and CAE. This methodology focuses on those concepts, which leads to the use of the right amount of light and strong material in the right place, instead of substituting the whole structure with the new material. An adaptive hybrid metaheuristic algorithm is designed to eliminate all factors that would lead to a local minimum instead of global optimum. Finding the global optimum is granted by using some explorative and exploitative search heuristics, which are intelligently organized by a central controller. Reliability, accuracy and the speed of the proposed algorithm are validated via a comparative study with similar algorithms for an academic optimization problem, which shows valuable results. Since structures might be subject to a wide range of load cases, e.g. static, cyclic, dynamic, temperature-dependent etc., these requirements need to be addressed by a multidisciplinary optimization algorithm. To handle the nonlinear response of objectives and to tackle the time-consuming FEM analyses in crash situations, a surrogate model is implemented in the optimization tool. The ability of such tool to present the optimum results in multi-objective problems is improved by using some user-selected fitness functions. Finally, an exemplary sub-assembly made of sheet metal parts from a car body is optimized to enhance both, static load case and crashworthiness.Die Automobilindustrie hat in den letzten Jahren unter dem Druck von Umweltvorschriften, Sicherheitsanforderungen und wettbewerbsfähigem Markt neue Wege auf dem Gebiet der Technologien eröffnet. Leichtbau gilt als eine der innovativsten und offenkundigsten Lösungen, um Umwelt- und Sicherheitsziele zu wettbewerbsfähigen Preisen zu erreichen. Die Wahl des besten Designs und Verfahrens für Produktionen in der Entwicklungsphase ist der wichtigste Ring der Automobilproduktionskette. Um unzählige Produktionsziele zu erreichen, müssen zahlreiche Design- und Prozessparameter bewertet werden. Die Anzahl und Variation der Lösungen und Ziele sowie einige Einschränkungen wie Fertigungsbeschränkungen, finanzielle Grenzen und Fristen beeinflussen die Auswahl einer guten Kombination von Variablen. In dieser Studie werden strukturelle Optimierungswerkzeuge für aus Blech gefertigte Baugruppen, z. Karosserie, basierend auf Parametrisierung und Bewertung von Lösungen in CAD bzw. CAE. Diese Methodik konzentriert sich auf die Lösungen, die dazu führen, dass die richtige Menge an leichtem / festem Material an der richtigen Stelle der Struktur verwendet wird, anstatt vollständig ersetzt zu werden. Eine adaptive Hybrid-Metaheuristik soll verhindern, dass alle Faktoren, die Bedrohungsoptimierungstools in einem lokalen Minimum konvergieren, anstelle eines globalen Optimums. Das Auffinden des globalen Optimums wird durch einige explorative und ausbeuterische Such Heuristiken gewährleistet. Die Zuverlässigkeit, Genauigkeit und Geschwindigkeit des vorgeschlagenen Algorithmus wird mit ähnlichen Algorithmen in akademischen Optimierungsproblemen validiert und führt zu respektablen Ergebnissen. Da Strukturen möglicherweise einem weiten Bereich von Lastfällen unterliegen, z. statische, zyklische, dynamische, Temperatur usw. Möglichkeit der multidisziplinären Optimierung wurde in Optimierungswerkzeugen bereitgestellt. Um die nichtlineare Reaktion von Zielen zu überwinden und um den hohen Zeitverbrauch von FEM-Analysen in Absturzereignissen zu bewältigen, könnte ein Ersatzmodell vom Benutzer verwendet werden. Die Fähigkeit von Optimierungswerkzeugen, optimale Ergebnisse bei Problemen mit mehreren Zielsetzungen zu präsentieren, wird durch die Verwendung einiger vom Benutzer ausgewählten Fitnessfunktionen verbessert.     Convergence of derivative-free nonmonotone Direct Search Methods for unconstrained and box-constrained mixed-integer optimization

    This paper presents a class of nonmonotone Direct Search Methods that converge to stationary points of unconstrained and boxed constrained mixed-integer optimization problems. A new concept is introduced: the quasi-descent direction. A point x is stationary on a set of search directions if there exists no feasible qdd on that set. The method does not require the computation of derivatives nor the explicit manipulation of asymptotically dense matrices.
