Using Open Stack for an Open Cloud Exchange(OCX)
We are developing a new public cloud, the Massachusetts Open Cloud (MOC) based on the model of an Open Cloud eXchange (OCX). We discuss in this paper the vision of an OCX and how we intend to realize it using the OpenStack open-source cloud platform in the MOC. A limited form of an OCX can be achieved today by layering new services on top
of OpenStack. We have performed an analysis of OpenStack to determine the changes needed in order to fully realize the OCX model. We describe these proposed changes, which although
significant and requiring broad community involvement will provide functionality of value to both existing single-provider clouds as well as future multi-provider ones
WARP: A ICN architecture for social data
Social network companies maintain complete visibility and ownership of the
data they store. However users should be able to maintain full control over
their content. For this purpose, we propose WARP, an architecture based upon
Information-Centric Networking (ICN) designs, which expands the scope of the
ICN architecture beyond media distribution, to provide data control in social
networks. The benefit of our solution lies in the lightweight nature of the
protocol and in its layered design. With WARP, data distribution and access
policies are enforced on the user side. Data can still be replicated in an ICN
fashion but we introduce control channels, named \textit{thread updates}, which
ensures that the access to the data is always updated to the latest control
policy. WARP decentralizes the social network but still offers APIs so that
social network providers can build products and business models on top of WARP.
Social applications run directly on the user's device and store their data on
the user's \textit{butler} that takes care of encryption and distribution.
Moreover, users can still rely on third parties to have high-availability
without renouncing their privacy
Internet of Things-aided Smart Grid: Technologies, Architectures, Applications, Prototypes, and Future Research Directions
Traditional power grids are being transformed into Smart Grids (SGs) to
address the issues in existing power system due to uni-directional information
flow, energy wastage, growing energy demand, reliability and security. SGs
offer bi-directional energy flow between service providers and consumers,
involving power generation, transmission, distribution and utilization systems.
SGs employ various devices for the monitoring, analysis and control of the
grid, deployed at power plants, distribution centers and in consumers' premises
in a very large number. Hence, an SG requires connectivity, automation and the
tracking of such devices. This is achieved with the help of Internet of Things
(IoT). IoT helps SG systems to support various network functions throughout the
generation, transmission, distribution and consumption of energy by
incorporating IoT devices (such as sensors, actuators and smart meters), as
well as by providing the connectivity, automation and tracking for such
devices. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on IoT-aided SG
systems, which includes the existing architectures, applications and prototypes
of IoT-aided SG systems. This survey also highlights the open issues,
challenges and future research directions for IoT-aided SG systems
ELDC: An Artificial Neural Network Based Energy-Efficient and Robust Routing Scheme for Pollution Monitoring in WSNs
[EN] The range of applications of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is increasing continuously despite of their serious constraints of the sensor nodesÂż resources such as storage, processing capacity, communication range and energy. The main issues in WSN are the energy consumption and the delay in relaying data to the Sink node. This becomes extremely important when deploying a big number of nodes, like the case of industry pollution monitoring. We propose an artificial neural network based energy-efficient and robust routing scheme for WSNs called ELDC. In this technique, the network is trained on huge data set containing almost all scenarios to make the network more reliable and adaptive to the environment. Additionally, it uses group based methodology to increase the life-span of the overall network, where groups may have different sizes. An artificial neural network provides an efficient threshold values for the selection of a group's CN and a cluster head based on back propagation technique and allows intelligent, efficient, and robust group organization. Thus, our proposed technique is highly energy-efficient capable to increase sensor nodesÂż lifetime. Simulation results show that it outperforms LEACH protocol by 42 percent, and other state-of-the-art protocols by more than 30 percent.Mehmood, A.; Lv, Z.; Lloret, J.; Umar, MM. (2020). Securing Data in Storage: A Review of Current Research
Protecting data from malicious computer users continues to grow in
importance. Whether preventing unauthorized access to personal photographs,
ensuring compliance with federal regulations, or ensuring the integrity of
corporate secrets, all applications require increased security to protect data
from talented intruders. Specifically, as more and more files are preserved on
disk the requirement to provide secure storage has increased in importance.
This paper presents a survey of techniques for securely storing data, including
theoretical approaches, prototype systems, and existing systems currently
available. Due to the wide variety of potential solutions available and the
variety of techniques to arrive at a particular solution, it is important to
review the entire field prior to selecting an implementation that satisfies
particular requirements. This paper provides an overview of the prominent
characteristics of several systems to provide a foundation for making an
informed decision. Initially, the paper establishes a set of criteria for
evaluating a storage solution based on confidentiality, integrity,
availability, and performance. Then, using these criteria, the paper explains
the relevant characteristics of select storage systems and provides a
comparison of the major differences.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures, 3 table
Utilising semantic technologies for decision support in dementia care
The main objective of this work is to discuss our experience in utilising semantic technologies for building decision support in Dementia care systems that are based on the non-intrusive on the non-intrusive monitoring of the patient’s behaviour. Our approach adopts context-aware modelling of the patient’s condition to facilitate the analysis of the patient’s behaviour within the inhabited environment (movement and room occupancy patterns, use of equipment, etc.) with reference to the semantic knowledge about the patient’s condition (history of present of illness, dependable behaviour patterns, etc.). The reported work especially focuses on the critical role of the semantic reasoning engine in inferring medical advice, and by means of practical experimentation and critical analysis suggests important findings related to the methodology of deploying the appropriate semantic rules systems, and the dynamics of the efficient utilisation of complex event processing technology in order to the meet the requirements of decision support for remote healthcare systems
