Space vehicle Viterbi decoder
The design and fabrication of an extremely low-power, constraint-length 7, rate 1/3 Viterbi decoder brassboard capable of operating at information rates of up to 100 kb/s is presented. The brassboard is partitioned to facilitate a later transition to an LSI version requiring even less power. The effect of soft-decision thresholds, path memory lengths, and output selection algorithms on the bit error rate is evaluated. A branch synchronization algorithm is compared with a more conventional approach. The implementation of the decoder and its test set (including all-digital noise source) are described along with the results of various system tests and evaluations. Turbo Decoding and Detection for Wireless Applications
A historical perspective of turbo coding and turbo transceivers inspired by the generic turbo principles is provided, as it evolved from Shannon’s visionary predictions. More specifically, we commence by discussing the turbo principles, which have been shown to be capable of performing close to Shannon’s capacity limit. We continue by reviewing the classic maximum a posteriori probability decoder. These discussions are followed by studying the effect of a range of system parameters in a systematic fashion, in order to gauge their performance ramifications. In the second part of this treatise, we focus our attention on the family of iterative receivers designed for wireless communication systems, which were partly inspired by the invention of turbo codes. More specifically, the family of iteratively detected joint coding and modulation schemes, turbo equalization, concatenated spacetime and channel coding arrangements, as well as multi-user detection and three-stage multimedia systems are highlighted
Data optimizations for constraint automata
Constraint automata (CA) constitute a coordination model based on finite
automata on infinite words. Originally introduced for modeling of coordinators,
an interesting new application of CAs is implementing coordinators (i.e.,
compiling CAs into executable code). Such an approach guarantees
correctness-by-construction and can even yield code that outperforms
hand-crafted code. The extent to which these two potential advantages
materialize depends on the smartness of CA-compilers and the existence of
proofs of their correctness.
Every transition in a CA is labeled by a "data constraint" that specifies an
atomic data-flow between coordinated processes as a first-order formula. At
run-time, compiler-generated code must handle data constraints as efficiently
as possible. In this paper, we present, and prove the correctness of two
optimization techniques for CA-compilers related to handling of data
constraints: a reduction to eliminate redundant variables and a translation
from (declarative) data constraints to (imperative) data commands expressed in
a small sequential language. Through experiments, we show that these
optimization techniques can have a positive impact on performance of generated
executable code
A functional description of the advanced receiver
The breadboard Advanced Receiver 2 (ARX 2) that is currently being built for future use in NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN) is described. The hybrid analog/digital receiver performs multiple functions including carrier, subcarrier, and symbol synchronization. Tracking can be achieved for residual, suppressed, or hybrid carriers and for both sinusoidal and square-wave subcarriers. Other functions such as time-tagged Doppler extraction and monitor/control are also discussed, including acquisition algorithms and lock-detection schemes. System requirements are specified and a functional description of the ARX 2 is presented. The various digital signal-processing algorithms used are also discussed and illustrated with block diagrams
New Solutions to the Firing Squad Synchronization Problems for Neural and Hyperdag P Systems
We propose two uniform solutions to an open question: the Firing Squad
Synchronization Problem (FSSP), for hyperdag and symmetric neural P systems,
with anonymous cells. Our solutions take e_c+5 and 6e_c+7 steps, respectively,
where e_c is the eccentricity of the commander cell of the dag or digraph
underlying these P systems. The first and fast solution is based on a novel
proposal, which dynamically extends P systems with mobile channels. The second
solution is substantially longer, but is solely based on classical rules and
static channels. In contrast to the previous solutions, which work for
tree-based P systems, our solutions synchronize to any subset of the underlying
digraph; and do not require membrane polarizations or conditional rules, but
require states, as typically used in hyperdag and neural P systems
