Mainstream Media in Contemporary Fluid News Environments: Brandcasting the News in the TV Genre of News Tickers
The following contribution focuses on a corpus-based linguistic analysis (Baker, 2006;McEnery & Hardie, 2012) of how the BBC World News uses its news tickers in order to promote itself and its ‘products’. More specifically, this contribution uses a newlydeveloped framework of analysis in approaching the study of News Discourse. Originatedwithin the field of Media Discourse analysis, the Discursive News Values Analysisapproach (Bednarek, 2016a, 2016b; Bednarek & Caple, 2012b, 2014, 2017; Caple & Bednarek, 2016) investigates “how newsworthiness is construed and established through discourse” (Bednarek & Caple, 2012b, p. 104). In this way, a discursive perspective seesnews values as a “quality of texts” (Caple & Bednarek, 2016, p. 13, emphasis in theoriginal) rather than as something linked to the event reported itself. Their analysis canthus allow us to “systematically investigate how these values are constructed in thedifferent types of textual material involved in the news process” (Bednarek & Caple2012b, p. 104). Therefore, through the use of corpus linguistic methodologies, we can gain“first insights into a conventionalised repertoire of rhetoric of newsworthiness” (Bednarek& Caple, 2014, p. 14) in the caseof corpora representative of specific media events or specific genres. In this way, the combination of Discursive News Values Analysis andcorpus linguistic methodologies can be used to better define how news stories are reportedin news tickers since, by underlining what is newsworthy for a particular newsorganisation, they can help researchers ‘sneak a peek’ into the professional practices at the very heart of the news production process
A television news graphical layout analysis method using eye tracking
This paper presents an analysis method used to evaluate the graphical layout of Television (TV) News. With the data gathered from an eye tracker, it is possible to discern viewers' main focus of attention. However, in the case of video media, the visualisation tools of eye tracking software are insufficient for this discernment. This method uses eye tracking log files and combines them with algorithms developed using a spreadsheet application and visual data representation techniques. As a result of this combination, it is possible to identify the graphics which have greater visual attention, and subsequently, these representations supported the analysis of viewers' main focus of attention (areas of interest). A case study was also applied for the validation of this method

One of the problems in viewing television news is related to the large
amount of visual and audio stimuli present in this television genre, and how
this multiplicity may have implications in viewers’ reception of information
contents. This work aims to understand how television communication
strategies influence the manner in which viewers receive the contents
present in the different graphics that are part of the informative layout of
television news. The focus of the reception of television news in this work
will be held at the level of attention and recall of information content.
To achieve this goal, this multi-methodological research proposes to
evaluate, through hypothesis testing, the disposition of a informative layout
of RTP’s television news, based on the informative layout of the "Jornal da
Tarde", which was produced and manipulated in a professional context. On
the one hand, this work introduces eye tracking as an evaluation technique
in the context of television news; on the other hand, it aims to understand,
through a set of methods and techniques, the display patterns in television
news, in order to present a informative layout proposal with the objective of
improving viewers’ attention and recall of information contents.
This involved the participation of 193 individuals, divided into three age
groups: ages 17-24, ages 25-54, and over 55 years old. The tests
consisted of two questionnaires (pre-session and post-session), and the
visualization of one of the six versions of television news produced for this
purpose. The mean duration of these tests, per participant, was
approximately 15 minutes.
The results show that in some versions, regardless of age, the visual
dispersion in some graphics may influence the attention and recall of
television news. These results contributed to the proposal of an optimized
graphical layout so that the reception of television news, specifically
regarding attention and recall of information contents, be more effective
