    Development and evaluation of clustering techniques for finding people

    Typically in a large organisation much expertise and knowledge is held informally within employees' own memories. When employees leave an organisation many documented links that go through that person are broken and no mechanism is usually available to overcome these broken links. This match making problem is related to the problem of finding potential work partners in a large and distributed organisation. This paper reports a comparative investigation into using standard information retrieval techniques to group employees together based on their webpages. This information can, hopefully, be subsequently used to redirect broken links to people who worked closely with a departed employee or used to highlight people, say indifferent departments, who work on similar topics. The paper reports the design and positive results of an experiment conducted at Risø National Laboratory comparing four different IR searching and clustering approaches using real users' web pages

    Reflections on Mira : interactive evaluation in information retrieval

    Evaluation in information retrieval (IR) has focussed largely on noninteractive evaluation of text retrieval systems. This is increasingly at odds with how people use modern IR systems: in highly interactive settings to access linked, multimedia information. Furthermore, this approach ignores potential improvements through better interface design. In 1996 the Commission of the European Union Information Technologies Programme, funded a three year working group, Mira, to discuss and advance research in the area of evaluation frameworks for interactive and multimedia IR applications. Led by Keith van Rijsbergen, Steve Draper and myself from Glasgow University, this working group brought together many of the leading researchers in the evaluation domain from both the IR and human computer interaction (HCI) communities. This paper presents my personal view of the main lines of discussion that took place throughout Mira: importing and adapting evaluation techniques from HCI, evaluating at different levels as appropriate, evaluating against different types of relevance and the new challenges that drive the need for rethinking the old evaluation approaches. The paper concludes that we need to consider more varied forms of evaluation to complement engine evaluation

    Information systems evaluation methodologies

    Due to the prevalent use of Information Systems (IS) in modern organisations nowadays, evaluation research in this field is becoming more and more important. In light of this, a set of rigorous methodologies were developed and used by IS researchers and practitioners to evaluate the increasingly complex IS implementation used. Moreover, different types of IS and different focusing perspectives of the evaluation require the selection and use of different evaluation approaches and methodologies. This paper aims to identify, explore, investigate and discuss the various key methodologies that can be used in IS evaluation from different perspectives, namely in nature (e.g. summative vs. formative evaluation) and in strategy (e.g. goal-based, goal-free and criteria-based evaluation). The paper concludes that evaluation methodologies should be selected depending on the nature of the IS and the specific goals and objectives of the evaluation. Nonetheless, it is also proposed that formative criteria-based evaluation and summative criteria-based evaluation are currently among the most and more widely used in IS research. The authors suggest that the combines used of one or more of these approaches can be applied at different stages of the IS life cycle in order to generate more rigorous and reliable evaluation outcomes

    A Task-Oriented Non-Interactive Evaluation Methodology for Information Retrieval Systems

    Past research has identified many different types of relevance in information retrieval (IR). So far, however, most evaluation of IR systems has been through batch experiments conducted with test collections containing only expert, topical relevance judgements. Recently, there has been some movement away from this traditional approach towards interactive, more user-centred methods of evaluation. However, these are expensive for evaluators in terms both of time and of resources. This paper describes a new evaluation methodology, using a task-oriented test collection, which combines the advantages of traditional noninteractive testing with a more user-centred emphasis. The main features of a task-oriented test collection are the adoption of the task, rather than the query, as the primary unit of evaluation and the naturalistic character of the relevance judgements. 2 1.     Techniques for Improving Web Search by Understanding Queries

    This thesis investigates the refinement of web search results with a special focus on the use of clustering and the role of queries. It presents a collection of new methods for evaluating clustering methods, performing clustering effectively, and for performing query refinement. The thesis identifies different types of query, the situations where refinement is necessary, and the factors affecting search difficulty. It then analyses hard searches and argues that many of them fail because users and search engines have different query models. The thesis identifies best practice for evaluating web search results and search refinement methods. It finds that none of the commonly used evaluation measures for clustering meet all of the properties of good evaluation measures. It then presents new quality and coverage measures that satisfy all the desired properties and that rank clusterings correctly in all web page clustering situations. The thesis argues that current web page clustering methods work well when different interpretations of the query have distinct vocabulary, but still have several limitations and often produce incomprehensible clusters. It then presents a new clustering method that uses the query to guide the construction of semantically meaningful clusters. The new clustering method significantly improves performance. Finally, the thesis explores how searches and queries are composed of different aspects and shows how to use aspects to reduce the distance between the query models of search engines and users. It then presents fully automatic methods that identify query aspects, identify underrepresented aspects, and predict query difficulty. Used in combination, these methods have many applications — the thesis describes methods for two of them. The first method improves the search results for hard queries with underrepresented aspects by automatically expanding the query using semantically orthogonal keywords related to the underrepresented aspects. The second method helps users refine hard ambiguous queries by identifying the different query interpretations using a clustering of a diverse set of refinements.     The Effectiveness of Query-Based Hierarchic Clustering of Documents for Information Retrieval

    Hierarchic document clustering has been applied to Information Retrieval (IR) for over three decades. Its introduction to IR was based on the grounds of its potential to improve the effectiveness of IR systems. Central to the issue of improved effectiveness is the Cluster Hypothesis. The hypothesis states that relevant documents tend to be highly similar to each other, and therefore tend to appear in the same clusters. However, previous research has been inconclusive as to whether document clustering does bring improvements. The main motivation for this work has been to investigate methods for the improvement of the effectiveness of document clustering, by challenging some assumptions that implicitly characterise its application. Such assumptions relate to the static manner in which document clustering is typically performed, and include the static application of document clustering prior to querying, and the static calculation of interdocument associations. The type of clustering that is investigated in this thesis is query-based, that is, it incorporates information from the query into the process of generating clusters of documents. Two approaches for incorporating query information into the clustering process are examined: clustering documents which are returned from an IR system in response to a user query (post-retrieval clustering), and clustering documents by using query-sensitive similarity measures. For the first approach, post-retrieval clustering, an analytical investigation into a number of issues that relate to its retrieval effectiveness is presented in this thesis. This is in contrast to most of the research which has employed post-retrieval clustering in the past, where it is mainly viewed as a convenient and efficient means of presenting documents to users. In this thesis, post-retrieval clustering is employed based on its potential to introduce effectiveness improvements compared both to static clustering and best-match IR systems. The motivation for the second approach, the use of query-sensitive measures, stems from the role of interdocument similarities for the validity of the cluster hypothesis. In this thesis, an axiomatic view of the hypothesis is proposed, by suggesting that documents relevant to the same query (co-relevant documents) display an inherent similarity to each other which is dictated by the query itself. Because of this inherent similarity, the cluster hypothesis should be valid for any document collection. Past research has attributed failure to validate the hypothesis for a document collection to characteristics of the collection. Contrary to this, the view proposed in this thesis suggests that failure of a document set to adhere to the hypothesis is attributed to the assumptions made about interdocument similarity. This thesis argues that the query determines the context and the purpose for which the similarity between documents is judged, and it should therefore be incorporated in the similarity calculations. By taking the query into account when calculating interdocument similarities, co-relevant documents can be "forced" to be more similar to each other. This view challenges the typically static nature of interdocument relationships in IR. Specific formulas for the calculation of query-sensitive similarity are proposed in this thesis. Four hierarchic clustering methods and six document collections are used in the experiments. Three main issues are investigated: the effectiveness of hierarchic post-retrieval clustering which uses static similarity measures, the effectiveness of query-sensitive measures at increasing the similarity of pairs of co-relevant documents, and the effectiveness of hierarchic clustering which uses query-sensitive similarity measures. The results demonstrate the effectiveness improvements that are introduced by the use of both approaches of query-based clustering, compared both to the effectiveness of static clustering and to the effectiveness of best-match IR systems. Query-sensitive similarity measures, in particular, introduce significant improvements over the use of static similarity measures for document clustering, and they also significantly improve the structure of the document space in terms of the similarity of pairs of co-relevant documents. The results provide evidence for the effectiveness of hierarchic query-based clustering of documents, and also challenge findings of previous research which had dismissed the potential of hierarchic document clustering as an effective method for information retrieval
