    FireFly v2: Advancing Hardware Support for High-Performance Spiking Neural Network with a Spatiotemporal FPGA Accelerator

    Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) are expected to be a promising alternative to Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) due to their strong biological interpretability and high energy efficiency. Specialized SNN hardware offers clear advantages over general-purpose devices in terms of power and performance. However, there's still room to advance hardware support for state-of-the-art (SOTA) SNN algorithms and improve computation and memory efficiency. As a further step in supporting high-performance SNNs on specialized hardware, we introduce FireFly v2, an FPGA SNN accelerator that can address the issue of non-spike operation in current SOTA SNN algorithms, which presents an obstacle in the end-to-end deployment onto existing SNN hardware. To more effectively align with the SNN characteristics, we design a spatiotemporal dataflow that allows four dimensions of parallelism and eliminates the need for membrane potential storage, enabling on-the-fly spike processing and spike generation. To further improve hardware acceleration performance, we develop a high-performance spike computing engine as a backend based on a systolic array operating at 500-600MHz. To the best of our knowledge, FireFly v2 achieves the highest clock frequency among all FPGA-based implementations. Furthermore, it stands as the first SNN accelerator capable of supporting non-spike operations, which are commonly used in advanced SNN algorithms. FireFly v2 has doubled the throughput and DSP efficiency when compared to our previous version of FireFly and it exhibits 1.33 times the DSP efficiency and 1.42 times the power efficiency compared to the current most advanced FPGA accelerators

    A Pipeline VLSI Architecture for High-Speed Computation of the 1-D Discrete Wavelet Transform

    In this paper, a scheme for the design of a high-speed pipeline VLSI architecture for the computation of the 1-D discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is proposed. The main focus of the scheme is on reducing the number and period of clock cycles for the DWT computation with little or no overhead on the hardware resources by maximizing the inter- and intrastage parallelisms of the pipeline. The interstage parallelism is enhanced by optimally mapping the computational load associated with the various DWT decomposition levels to the stages of the pipeline and by synchronizing their operations. The intrastage parallelism is enhanced by decomposing the filtering operation equally into two subtasks that can be performed independently in parallel and by optimally organizing the bitwise operations for performing each subtask so that the delay of the critical data path from a partial-product bit to a bit of the output sample for the filtering operation is minimized. It is shown that an architecture designed based on the proposed scheme requires a smaller number of clock cycles compared to that of the architectures employing comparable hardware resources. In fact, the requirement on the hardware resources of the architecture designed by using the proposed scheme also gets improved due to a smaller number of registers that need to be employed. Based on the proposed scheme, a specific example of designing an architecture for the DWT computation is considered. In order to assess the feasibility and the efficiency of the proposed scheme, the architecture thus designed is simulated and implemented on a field-programmable gate-array board. It is seen that the simulation and implementation results conform to the stated goals of the proposed scheme, thus making the scheme a viable approach for designing a practical and realizable architecture for real-time DWT computation

    FPGA-based high-performance neural network acceleration

    In the last ten years, Artificial Intelligence through Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) has penetrated virtually every aspect of science, technology, and business. Advances are rapid with thousands of papers being published annually. Many types of DNNs have been and continue to be developed -- in this thesis, we address Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) -- each with a different set of target applications and implementation challenges. The overall problem for all of these Neural Networks (NNs) is that their target applications generally pose stringent constraints on latency and throughput, but also have strict accuracy requirements. Much research has therefore gone into all aspects of improving NN quality and performance: algorithms, code optimization, acceleration with GPUs, and acceleration with hardware, both dedicated ASICs and off-the-shelf FPGAs. In this thesis, we concentrate on the last of these approaches. There have been many previous efforts in creating hardware to accelerate NNs. The problem designers face is that optimal NN models typically have significant irregularities, making them hardware unfriendly. One commonly used approach is to train NN models to follow regular computation and data patterns. This approach, however, can hurt the models' accuracy or lead to models with non-negligible redundancies. This dissertation takes a different approach. Instead of regularizing the model, we create architectures friendly to irregular models. Our thesis is that high-accuracy and high-performance NN inference and training can be achieved by creating a series of novel irregularity-aware architectures for Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). In four different studies on four different NN types, we find that this approach results in speedups of 2.1x to 3255x compared with carefully selected prior art; for inference, there is no change in accuracy. The bulk of this dissertation revolves around these studies, the various workload balancing techniques, and the resulting NN acceleration architectures. In particular, we propose four different architectures to handle, respectively, data structure level, operation level, bit level, and model level irregularities. At the data structure level, we propose AWB-GCN, which uses runtime workload rebalancing to handle Sparse Matrices Multiplications (SpMM) on extremely sparse and unbalanced input. With GNN inference as a case study, AWB-GCN achieves over 90% system efficiency, guarantees efficient off-chip memory access, and provides considerable speedups over CPUs (3255x), GPUs (80x), and a prior ASIC accelerator (5.1x). At the operation level, we propose O3BNN-R, which can detect redundant operations and prune them at run time. This works even for those that are highly data-dependent and unpredictable. With Binarized NNs (BNNs) as a case study, O3BNN-R can prune over 30% of the operations, without any accuracy loss, yielding speedups over state-of-the-art implementations on CPUs (1122x), GPUs (2.3x), and FPGAs (2.1x). At the bit level, we propose CQNN. CQNN embeds a Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Architecture (CGRA) which can be programmed at runtime to support NN functions with various data-width requirements. Results show that CQNN can deliver us-level Quantized NN (QNN) inference. At the model level, we propose FPDeep, especially for training. In order to address model-level irregularity, FPDeep uses a novel model partitioning schemes to balance workload and storage among nodes. By using a hybrid of model and layer parallelism to train DNNs, FPDeep avoids the large gap that commonly occurs between training and testing accuracy due to the improper convergence to sharp minimizers (caused by large training batches). Results show that FPDeep provides scalable, fast, and accurate training and leads to 6.6x higher energy efficiency than GPUs

    This thesis proposes SoPC (System on a Programmable Chip) architectures for efficient embedding of vison-based localization and obstacle detection tasks in a navigational pipeline on autonomous mobile robots. The obtained results are equivalent or better in comparison to state-ofthe- art. For localization, an efficient hardware architecture that supports EKF-SLAM's local map management with seven-dimensional landmarks in real time is developed. For obstacle detection a novel method of object recognition is proposed - detection by identification framework based on single detection window scale. This framework allows adequate algorithmic precision and execution speeds on embedded hardware platforms.Ova teza bavi se dizajnom SoPC (engl.     A novel parallel algorithm for surface editing and its FPGA implementation

    A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophySurface modelling and editing is one of important subjects in computer graphics. Decades of research in computer graphics has been carried out on both low-level, hardware-related algorithms and high-level, abstract software. Success of computer graphics has been seen in many application areas, such as multimedia, visualisation, virtual reality and the Internet. However, the hardware realisation of OpenGL architecture based on FPGA (field programmable gate array) is beyond the scope of most of computer graphics researches. It is an uncultivated research area where the OpenGL pipeline, from hardware through the whole embedded system (ES) up to applications, is implemented in an FPGA chip. This research proposes a hybrid approach to investigating both software and hardware methods. It aims at bridging the gap between methods of software and hardware, and enhancing the overall performance for computer graphics. It consists of four parts, the construction of an FPGA-based ES, Mesa-OpenGL implementation for FPGA-based ESs, parallel processing, and a novel algorithm for surface modelling and editing. The FPGA-based ES is built up. In addition to the Nios II soft processor and DDR SDRAM memory, it consists of the LCD display device, frame buffers, video pipeline, and algorithm-specified module to support the graphics processing. Since there is no implementation of OpenGL ES available for FPGA-based ESs, a specific OpenGL implementation based on Mesa is carried out. Because of the limited FPGA resources, the implementation adopts the fixed-point arithmetic, which can offer faster computing and lower storage than the floating point arithmetic, and the accuracy satisfying the needs of 3D rendering. Moreover, the implementation includes Bézier-spline curve and surface algorithms to support surface modelling and editing. The pipelined parallelism and co-processors are used to accelerate graphics processing in this research. These two parallelism methods extend the traditional computation parallelism in fine-grained parallel tasks in the FPGA-base ESs. The novel algorithm for surface modelling and editing, called Progressive and Mixing Algorithm (PAMA), is proposed and implemented on FPGA-based ES’s. Compared with two main surface editing methods, subdivision and deformation, the PAMA can eliminate the large storage requirement and computing cost of intermediated processes. With four independent shape parameters, the PAMA can be used to model and edit freely the shape of an open or closed surface that keeps globally the zero-order geometric continuity. The PAMA can be applied independently not only FPGA-based ESs but also other platforms. With the parallel processing, small size, and low costs of computing, storage and power, the FPGA-based ES provides an effective hybrid solution to surface modelling and editing
