    Dynamic Behavior Sequencing in a Hybrid Robot Architecture

    Hybrid robot control architectures separate plans, coordination, and actions into separate processing layers to provide deliberative and reactive functionality. This approach promotes more complex systems that perform well in goal-oriented and dynamic environments. In various architectures, the connections and contents of the functional layers are tightly coupled so system updates and changes require major changes throughout the system. This work proposes an abstract behavior representation, a dynamic behavior hierarchy generation algorithm, and an architecture design to reduce this major change incorporation process. The behavior representation provides an abstract interface for loose coupling of behavior planning and execution components. The hierarchy generation algorithm utilizes the interface allowing dynamic sequencing of behaviors based on behavior descriptions and system objectives without knowledge of the low-level implementation or the high-level goals the behaviors achieve. This is accomplished within the proposed architecture design, which is based on the Three Layer Architecture (TLA) paradigm. The design provides functional decomposition of system components with respect to levels of abstraction and temporal complexity. The layers and components within this architecture are independent of surrounding components and are coupled only by the linking mechanisms that the individual components and layers allow. The experiments in this thesis demonstrate that the: 1) behavior representation provides an interface for describing a behavior’s functionality without restricting or dictating its actual implementation; 2) hierarchy generation algorithm utilizes the representation interface for accomplishing high-level tasks through dynamic behavior sequencing; 3) representation, control logic, and architecture design create a loose coupling, but defined link, between the planning and behavior execution layer of the hybrid architecture, which creates a system-of-systems implementation that requires minimal reprogramming for system modifications

    An empirical study on mutation testing of WS-BPEL programs

    Nowadays, applications are increasingly deployed as Web services in the globally distributed cloud computing environment. Multiple services are normally composed to fulfill complex functionalities. Business Process Execution Language for Web Services (WS-BPEL) is an XML-based service composition language that is used to define a complex business process by orchestrating multiple services. Compared with traditional applications, WS-BPEL programs pose many new challenges to the quality assurance, especially testing, of service compositions. A number of techniques have been proposed for testing WS-BPEL programs, but only a few studies have been conducted to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques. Mutation testing has been widely acknowledged as not only a testing method in its own right but also a popular technique for measuring the fault-detection effectiveness of other testing methods. Several previous studies have proposed a family of mutation operators for generating mutants by seeding various faults into WS-BPEL programs. In this study, we conduct a series of empirical studies to evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of various mutation operators for WS-BPEL programs. The experimental results provide insightful and comprehensive guidance for mutation testing of WS-BPEL programs in practice. In particular, our work is the systematic study in the selection of effective mutation operators specifically for WS-BPEL programs

    SchemaAnalyst: Search-Based Test Data Generation for Relational Database Schemas

    Data stored in relational databases plays a vital role in many aspects of society. When this data is incorrect, the services that depend on it may be compromised. The database schema is the artefact responsible for maintaining the integrity of stored data. Because of its critical function, the proper testing of the database schema is a task of great importance. Employing a search-based approach to generate high-quality test data for database schemas, SchemaAnalyst is a tool that supports testing this key software component. This presented tool is extensible and includes both an evaluation framework for assessing the quality of the generated tests and full-featured documentation. In addition to describing the design and implementation of SchemaAnalyst and overviewing its efficiency and effectiveness, this paper coincides with the tool’s public release, thereby enhancing practitioners’ ability to test relational database schemas

    Test case prioritization approaches in regression testing: A systematic literature review

    Context Software quality can be assured by going through software testing process. However, software testing phase is an expensive process as it consumes a longer time. By scheduling test cases execution order through a prioritization approach, software testing efficiency can be improved especially during regression testing. Objective It is a notable step to be taken in constructing important software testing environment so that a system's commercial value can increase. The main idea of this review is to examine and classify the current test case prioritization approaches based on the articulated research questions. Method Set of search keywords with appropriate repositories were utilized to extract most important studies that fulfill all the criteria defined and classified under journal, conference paper, symposiums and workshops categories. 69 primary studies were nominated from the review strategy. Results There were 40 journal articles, 21 conference papers, three workshop articles, and five symposium articles collected from the primary studies. As for the result, it can be said that TCP approaches are still broadly open for improvements. Each approach in TCP has specified potential values, advantages, and limitation. Additionally, we found that variations in the starting point of TCP process among the approaches provide a different timeline and benefit to project manager to choose which approaches suite with the project schedule and available resources. Conclusion Test case prioritization has already been considerably discussed in the software testing domain. However, it is commonly learned that there are quite a number of existing prioritization techniques that can still be improved especially in data used and execution process for each approach

    Test case prioritization technique based on string distance metrics

    Numerous test case prioritization (TCP) approaches have been introduced to enhance the test viability in software testing activity with the goal to maximize early average percentage fault detection (APFD). There are different approaches and the process for each approach varies. Furthermore, these approaches are not well documented within the single TCP approach. Based on current studies, having an approach that has high coverage effectiveness (CE) and APFD rate, remains a challenge in TCP. The string-based approach is known to have a single string distance based metric to differentiate test cases that can improve the CE results. However, to differentiate precisely the test cases, the string distances require enhancement. Therefore, a TCP technique based on string distance metric was developed to improve CE and APFD rate. In this research, to differentiate precisely the test cases and counter the string distances problem, an enhanced string distances based metric with a string weight based metric was introduced. Then, the metric was executed under designed process for string-based approach for complete evaluation. Experimental results showed that the enhanced string metric had the highest APFD with 98.56% and highest CE with 69.82% in Siemen dataset, cstcas. Besides, the technique yielded the highest APFD with 76.38% in Robotic Wheelchair System (RWS) case study. As a conclusion, the enhanced TCP technique with weight based metric has prioritised the test case based on their occurrences which helped to differentiate precisely the test cases, and improved the overall scores of APFD and CE
